Seven Taliban killed after failed attack at airport in eastern Afghanistan

NANGAHAR, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Seven armed Taliban on Tuesday night were killed after a failed attack at an airport in eastern Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Wednesday.

ISAF said that at least seven armed insurgents were killed and one more injured. The failed attack took place at a forward operating base in Beshud district, Nangarhar province.

Coalition forces repelled the attack with small-arms and an air weapons team. No Afghan or ISAF casualties were reported. The coalition air weapons team engaged in a fire exchange that lasted around 20 minutes and forced insurgents to flee.

After the failed attack, Afghan police and ISAF troops seized several automatic weapons, four hundred 7.62 mm rounds, one mortar tube, two RPG launchers and 19 RPG rounds.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack and said that militants destroyed 3 helicopters and several military vehicles. ISAF denied the report and informed that only minor damage to a helicopter and a couple of structures were sustained.

The NATO-backed war in Afghanistan aims to defeat the Taliban and other insurgent groups in the country. So far this year, more than 100 coalition service members have been killed in Afghanistan most of them in the country's south, which is plagued by IED attacks on troops and civilians.
