FLOODWATER IS EXPECTED TO HIT CHIANG MAI CITY EARLY THIS MORNING

The Chiang Mai governor has held a meeting with related agencies on contingency plan to cope with the waterflow expected to reach the city this morning.

Reports from the Meteorological Department indicated the depression has weakened and entered Myanmar. However rain would still be prevalent. Six districts in Chiang Mai are heavily hit with flood, where 4 people have lost their lives. The city area is expected to be hit by flood starting early this morning, where the water could be as high as 4 meters at Nawarat(นวรัฐ) bridge.

Mr. Saengrat Benjaphong(แสงรัตน์ เบญจพงศ์), director of the Irrigation Office Region 1, said the Irrigation Department will not release water from the Mae_ngad(แม่งัด) Dam, and only water that passed through the spill-ways would flow out.

Chiang Mai City Mayor Boonlert Buranupakorn(บุญเลิศ บุรณุปกรณ์) said the municipality had erected sandbag barriers that should prevent the city area from being flooded if the floodwater was 4 meters high. However as many as a thousand of the placed sandbags have been stolen, and officials now have to be dispatched to watch over the sandbags.

Today Interior Minister Khongsak Wanthana(คงศักดิ์ วันทนา) will inspect the flooded areas in Chiang Mai and Lampang.

CHIANG MAI FLOOD HAS STARTED TO DECLINE THIS MORNING

The flood in Chiang Mai has started to decline after inundating a large area of the economic zone.

The water level in PING (ปิง) River at NAOWARAT (นวรัตน์) Bridge measured 4 meters 93 centimeters since 1 A.M. this morning, and maintained for 4 hours before it started to decline by 1 centimeter per hour since 5 A.M. The water flowing from the north has also reduced.

The city area has been widely flooded, while the municipality area, including Night Bazaar, has been flooded for the 4th time. Low-lying compounds were flooded, in which some flooded were so high that the regional electricity body had to cut off power as water reached the electric converters.

Rainfalls in various districts have started to cease, while the clouds are still covering a large area in the main city. The situation is expected to improve if northern water does not reinforce the flood.

Meanwhile, the provincial administration of Chiang Mai has gathered service centers for public assistance at one single site, at the municipality's stadium. People are reported to have continuously called into the center for food, water and transport assistances.

INTERIOR MINISTER SAYS FLOOD IN CHIANG MAI IS STABILIZING

The Interior Minister has indicated that the flood situation in the northern province of CHIANG MAI is stabilizing, while the flood in LAMPANG Province is still able manageable.

Interior Minister KONGSAK WANTHANA (คงศักดิ์ วันทนา) said the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is rapidly removing floodwater in various places of CHIANG MAI. As for LAMPANG, five percent of the flooded areas in the province were 'pan beds' or basins.

The Interior Minister remarked that he has not been informed about the flood reaching the provincial governor's hall. Most flood-hit buildings are residences located near the river, and especially in the municipality. However, Air Chief Marshal KONGSAK believes that there is no need for civil workers in the northern region to temporarily cease work at the moment, as the flood impacts on the civil service sector are still minimal.
