Iran arrests suspected terrorists over recent attacks

TEHRAN, IRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Iran's Prosecutor-General Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeii on Monday announced that security forces disrupted a number of terrorist cells responsible for recent attacks in various regions of the Islamic country.

According to Fars news agency, Ejeii did not inform the number of individuals arrested or the identity of them. The Prosecutor-General said that the people arrested are suspected of being behind the terrorist attacks in southwestern, western and northwestern Iran.

"Fortunately, the elements behind these incidents have been identified and arrested thanks to the efforts made by the IRGC (the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps) and Intelligence Ministry officials," said Ejeii.

In April, Iran formed a special committee to investigate the terror attacks in the western cities of Sanandaj and Marivan in Kurdistan province, including the assassination of Sanandaj's religious leader Mamosta Borhan Ali.

The probe was later extended to include the terrorist acts in the southwestern city of Ahvaz and the northwestern city of Zanjan. Prosecutor-General Ejeii added that the detainees will be questioned as part of the ongoing investigations.

On March 24, gunmen shot dead two police officers and injured three others in two separate attacks in Sanandaj. Later on April 1, militants opened fire on a border police station near Marivan, killing four and wounding three law agents.

In Ahvaz, a group of armed men killed a police officer and a civilian after attacking a security checkpoint; three people were also injured. Last week, eight men were detained over their alleged involvement on the April 15 terrorist act
