NATO forces strike Tripoli communications headquarters

TRIPOLI (BNO NEWS) -- NATO-led forces on early Monday morning bombed a communications headquarters in Tripoli in what Libyan government officials condemned as an attempted assassination of leader Muammar Gaddafi.

NATO said the Communications Headquarters in central Tripoli was being used by Libyan forces to coordinate attacks against civilians. But Libyan government officials denied this, saying it was an attempt to take out Gaddafi.

"We have contacted Russia, China, Turkey, Italy and other countries either directly or through their embassies in Tripoli and we have informed them that the message that was sent by NATO in the early hours of this morning was sent to the wrong address," said Libyan government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim.

Libyan reports that dozens of people were injured in the strike could not be independently verified.

"We are bringing all our capabilities to bear on all parts of the Gaddafi regime that remain intent on harming the civilian population," said NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu. "As decided by the foreign ministers of NATO and operational partners, we will keep up the pressure until all attacks against civilians have stopped, Gaddafi's forces have withdrawn to bases and full and unimpeded humanitarian access has been ensured."
