BEIJING (BNO NEWS) -- Ten people were killed on early Sunday morning when a fire broke out at a hotel in northeastern China, state-run media reported.

The fire broke out at around 3.30 a.m. local time in a stairwell of a Home Inns hotel in Tonghua City of Jilin Province, located in the country's northeast. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, ten people suffocated to death while 35 others were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Three of them were seriously injured, while the others are believed to have sustained minor injuries.

Firefighters were still searching the scene on late Sunday evening and an investigation into the cause of the fire has been initiated, Xinhua added.

Earlier this year, on January 13, ten people were killed and eight others were injured when a fire broke out at a small hotel in the Yuelu District of Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province. Most died of smoke inhalation as all the hotel windows had been shut by metal bars, preventing people from escaping.
