According to reports, unidentified gunmen on Friday night stormed into a house in North Kashmir's Handwara and opened indiscriminate fire on the inmates, killing the house owner and his young son. The unknown gunmen managed to escape. "During the intervening night, unidentified gunmen entered into the house of Ghulam Rasool Mir son of Late Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din resident of Bawan, Handwara fired indiscriminately, resulting in on spot death of Ghulam Rasool Mir, 50, and his son Manzoor Ahmad Mir, 29," a police official told Kashmir Dispatch.

"A massive manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits. Bodies handed over to heir relatives for last rites. A case has been registered in this regard," he added. Early on Saturday, as the news of the killings spread in the area, hundreds of people took to the streets and staged massive demonstrations. Protesters chanted slogans and demanded that the killers be identified and punished. Militant groups are usually blamed for the killings in the region. A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided into parts administered by India and Pakistan. The government says more than 45,000 people -including civilians, militants and troops - have died in the region over the past two decades. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-05-
