Garry
You should have submitted a list of your likes & dislikes and personal reflection on life, the universe and everything. You'll know next time from our skilled adjudicators in the forum. My answer would have been 42, now what was the question?
kandahar
I settled here because this is where my wife lives. We stay here because we have Mother and Father to take care of. When they are gone, we will continue to stay here because it isn't Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, BKK.............................................. This place isn't for everyone. I would guess that more people who visit this place stay on because of what it isn't more so than what it is. It isn't party town. It isn't metropolitan. It isn't crime ridden. It isn't unbearably hot and humid year round. It isn't overrun by tourists. It isn't active 24 hours a day. It isn't a fast pace. What is it? It is family oriented. It is friendly to strangers. It is pretty much the same price for Farang as it is for locals. Family doctors and dentists keep evening hours. Traffic is slow and forgiving. Cops pretty much prefer to wave you on once they identify you as a Farang. There are exceptions to all of this, of course. There's lots more. I won't go into them all. Maybe others will add some. And for most of what I have written, there are some exceptions. You said the places weren't as good as you were told. I dunno about any of that. I wasn't told anything about the "places" before I came, so I had no expectations. There are lots of hidden gems here. And there are a few places, mostly Farang owned, that are loudly claimed to be something they are not. But overall, it is a pretty cool place to be if you're in the right frame of mind. Spot on! apart from my dig before at the OP, +1 to KD, spot on mate. To the OP, keep looking and researching the forums and you will find your little slice of heaven eventually, I found mine and it was a similar path to KD; my wife and I came up here from Chiang Mai to stay and take care of our family including her aging parents. Peacefull rural setting. All good for me Edited June 2, 2011 by Garry
villagefarang
Two days you say. That is hardly enough time to sample what is available at any location and Chiang Rai is no exception. I am sure you understand, a longtime resident and a day-tripper are going to have very different needs, expectations and reactions to a place. In the topic you ask about ‘settlement’ yet in your post you express dissatisfaction with a two day trip. That leaves me wondering what you really want. Do you want a list of places that you will find dreamy and wonderful to visit or do you want stories about how most of us have family connections to Chiang Rai and lifestyles that revolve around that? As for the picture you posted in the other thread, if you are implying what you seem to be implying, then all I can say is a gentleman never boasts of his conquests in such a way. (Unless your name is Ian, of course.) Edited June 2, 2011 by villagefarang
dunkin2012
thanks all..... kandahar , garry, villagefarang and jubby leave CM alone for now !!!! not really my all dissatisfaction. some places are ok on the other hand, some places are as mentioned. For sure can't live there cos' I don't particularly know anyone there. it will take time for me to fit myself in the society though. but if I meet a girl I love to stay with. it might be possible. at first, I want to live there for a while. as mentioned by kandahar that the weather is nice. historical scenes. and others Was looking for a flat to staying CR and then I gave up. I really appreciate to listen to some of your some ideas . willing to share. but I wanna go back again.....another try am i making myself clear? Thighlander
At age 47, I am starting to lean more towards Chiang Rai. Better noodle soup than CNX. Easier to get across the street. Better place to be if you are NOT a teacher. Pineapple, Papaya, 10 baht per hour internet, all that good stuff. And the old airport is cool too. 200 bucks for an entire year of golf.....people pay more than that to play once around here in Phoenix, during the high season. I've considered Udon Thani, too, and I am real tempted by Cambodia, which seems to welcome foreign investment more, not to mention smoking ganja es no problema.
