XI'AN, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- A Chinese student on Tuesday was executed after being convicted for the murder of a young mother to cover up a hit-and run accident, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Yao Jiaxin, 21, was executed in Xi'an, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province with the approval of the Supreme People's Court (SPC). Yao was a student at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music.

The young killer was convicted of murdering Zhang Miao, the mother of a two-year-old boy, in order to prevent her from reporting the accident to the police. Yao stabbed the mother last October after hitting her with his car.

On April 22, the defendant was sentence to death by the Xi'an Intermediate People's Court. He appealed his sentence after trial but with no avail as the court said the evidence was sufficient to maintain the court's ruling.

"Yao stabbed the victim's chest, stomach and back several times until she died. The motive was extremely despicable, the measures extremely cruel and the consequences extremely serious," said a statement by the SPC.

Four days after the murder, Yao turned himself in to authorities. He was accompanied by his parents. The case gained widespread notoriety over the increasing reckless behavior of the country's rich younger generation.
