Two killed in Somalia suicide bomb attack

MOGADISHU (BNO NEWS) -- At least two people were killed on Thursday after suicide bombers attacked a Mogadishu seaport in Somalia, Africa Review reported.

According to the harbour's authority, a man armed with a pistol and wearing a suicide belt blew himself up, reportedly targeting the entrance guarded by the African Union peacekeepers, Amisom. Witnesses, who saw the armed men wearing suicide devices, told local media that there was an exchange of fire and then suicide explosions.

According to reports, the other man was killed by AU peacekeepers.

Ahemnd Abdi Kediye, the deputy manager of the port, confirmed the incident, adding that further attacks were averted by the port's security.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab group is often blamed for suicide bombings and other explosions in Somalia.

AMISOM said the combined forces now control about 60 percent of the capital. The government, however, has little influence beyond Mogadishu, and al-Shabaab controls much of south and center of the war ravaged east African country.

Somalia has not had an effective government since Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown two decades ago.
