KUNDUZ CITY, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least four police officers were killed in Afghanistan during a suicide attack on Friday in the northern region of the country, which injured several others, officials said.

A suicide bomber appeared to be targeting Kunduz police chief Brigadier General Samiullah Qatra, who was participating in a prayer ceremony at a mosque in Kunduz City, which is located in Afghanistan's northern province of Kunduz, local police spokesman Syed Sarwar Hussaini told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Afghan Public Health Director Dr. Zafar Noori confirmed the death of four policemen, adding that 18 others were also wounded during the attack, including 14 police officers and four civilians.

The prayer ceremony was being held for northern zone police commander General Daud Daud, who was killed during the May 28 attack against a high-level meeting in Taliqan, in the neighboring Takhar province. A bomb detonated after it was previously hidden in the building where the meeting was being held. During the attack, two German soldiers were also killed, as well as a provincial police chief.

No group has claimed responsibility of the bomb explosion, but members of the Taliban commonly carry out similar attacks.
