News_Editor
Violent clashes break out during Greek protests against austerity measures 2011-06-15 22:05:05 GMT+7 (ICT) ATHENS, GREECE (BNO NEWS) -- Violent clashes broke out as tens of thousands of Greek protesters gathered in Athens on Wednesday to oppose the government's austerity measures, local media reported. Around 20,000 people gathered at Syntagma Square in the Greek capital where tensions in front of the Parliament grew until violent clashes broke out. Crowds began throwing stones, bottles, and Molotov cocktails as fighting broke out at University stadium and around Syntagma Square. Police forces, in return, used tear gas to disperse the crowds, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation reported. According to reports, twelve people were injured during the incidents, including eight people - seven civilians and one journalist - who required hospitalization. In addition, one police officer was transported to a hospital to treat his wounds. The protests come as Greece's largest labor unions joined to hold a 24-hour strike, which has affected public services including hospitals and health clinics, public transportation, and mass media broadcasts. Flights, however, were expected to operate normally. Greek nationals are protesting against government-enforced cutbacks as the country receives an international bailout worth €110 billion ($157.2 billion). The European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are currently reviewing a second bailout package worth €28 billion ($40 billion). -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-06-
