Laid off Indonesian workers protest at parliament building

2011-06-16 01:30:08 GMT+7 (ICT)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Dozens of laid off workers from a food packing company rallied inside the building of Indonesia's House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, local media reported.

Last April, around 300 workers were laid off by PT Glopac Indonesia for starting and joining a labor union, the Antara news agency reported, adding that the company did not make a severance pay to the workers.

According to Indonesian Labor Union Movement spokesman Ismail Sukandi, PT Glopac Indonesia had also filed a Rp 7.3 billion ($854,000) lawsuit against a movement for setting up the labor union.

Workers decided to gather and stage the rally at the parliament building to clarify their situation, as they have not received an answer from the company or the District of Bekasi in West Java, where the company is located. Security officials at the House of Representatives building, however, moved quickly and expelled the protesters.
