Thailand To Shed 'Sex Tourism' Tag Soon

Pattaya is a nice place when you know where to go, the best places don't actually cater to sex tourists.

I'm sure Pattaya residents could confirm that.

Most Pattaya residents wouldn't live there for any other reasons than the sex.

What Pattaya residents have to say ?

A recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report has pegged the number of female prostitutes in the country at 2 lakh.

can someone enlighten me? how much is 2 lakh.?

thaisabai

2 lakh is 200,000.

It seems to me that the Thai consul's effort is about changing the *image* of Thailand as a sex tourism destination. Indian tourism is mostly about family tourism, so this makes sense as part of his job in India. Thing is, the image is a result of facts on the ground. An honest way to change the image would be to change the facts on the ground. To do that, the economy needs to provide jobs and careers good enough to entice people away from – or not enter in the first place – the sex trade.

"A lakh (play /ˈlæk/ lak or /ˈlɑːk/ lahk; also lac) is a unit in the Indian numbering system equal to one hundred thousand (100,000; 105). It is widely used both in official and other contexts in Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Pakistan, and is often used in Indian English."

if there are only 2 lahk working girls, I wonder what the other million or so are called?

Errr ... HiSo?

Here is a free tip for Thailand. In Las Vegas , Nevada, the city " leaders" decided they did not want the reputation for the city to be sin and gambling. They then tried to redo all publicity to push for family tourism. Revenues fell WAY off, they came to their senses, and the new promotion became" what goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas". Thailand can certainly do whatever it wants, but if it kills off the sex trade just be sure to have regular jobs for all the girls from Issan...... This kind of government social engineering is made all the more funny by the fact that 80 to 90 percent of the sex trade is for the benefit of and used by Thai men. But I suppose that segment will not be going away. :whistling:

On a side note, if they really do want family tourism, the government is going to have to do something about the endless scams. Those do not go well with families. Kids watching their dad get beaten up by jet ski thugs could have a detrimental effect on future families visiting......

Another crackpot announcement after 40 years of building up a sex tourist industry, all the boys and girls return to Issan.

Then fill your hotels with bucket and spade families, to enjoy the costa del Pattayas bleached sands and crystal sea, then wait and see how many you get----you my consul friend have got a pheasant flown away-so to speak.

Trying to picture the scene without the bars and street venders, taking the buzz from walking street, with OTOP shops galore. Punch and Judy on the beach, candy floss and toffee apples for all.

Tourists hiring motor bikes for the whole family to ride on. Wheres your police force going ????:welcomeani::mfr_closed1::hit-the-fan:

1 lakh is 100,000 so 2 lakh would be 200,000.

song san = 200,000 song lan= 2 million

They can advertise all they want, but what's going to happen when they get Thailand? False advertising claims against the tourist industry maybe. They'll have to provide things for kids to do other than beaches and tiki huts.

Just for information, there are maybe 7 or 8 flights a day from Hong Kong to Bangkok, mostly all fully booked

What?? with, dirty old men no doubt craving sex with Thai bar girls!!!

You ve obviously never been on these planes.

Mostly groups of young people going to enjoy inflatable boats and shopping

I tell you, times they are a changin

It's been the same way since at least 1997 when I used to make the trip every week and unless things have changed dramatically of late, there must be something like thirty flights a day between HK and BKK, Cathay alone used to operate twelve and Thai a further seven.

Yeah, that got me too - but Google is your friend.

A lakh is a unit in the Indian numbering system equal to one hundred thousand... so WHO reckons there are 200,000 prostitutes in Thailand (maybe 0.5% of all Thai women). Doesn't sound too far off to me.

And I see some are trying to say Thailand tourism is changing (as is the Thai consul to India). I think you all have your heads in the sand if you think that buying sexual services is not part of Thai culture... it has nothing to do with tourists.

The key point is that Thai prostitution is by Thai for Thai. While tourists will frequent sex spots the tourism traffic alone would never support the industry. So, how are they going to change the cultural norm of prostitution and infidelity with kept mistresses among Thais? And you don't create a family destination in name only. Las Vegas developed family friendly daytime activities such as soft adventure attractions in nearby mountains and on Lake Mead. They worked with hotels to offer family friendly entertainment and many of the off-strip hotels are family priced.

Not only are the scams detrimental, the whole issue of safety will have to be addressed. Never mind the insurgent attacks in the south, the occupied international airport, and 91 people dead in the streets. Hardly a week goes by without a non-Thai--which translates to tourist in a tourist's mind--falling victim to crime or negligence, often violent. The perceived reluctance of local authorities to investigate thoroughly, accompanied by blanket denials of Thai responsibility before the fact, is increasing on the heels of the multiple hotel deaths up north. What family would embark on a vacation to a foreign country without reading their government's postings and there are travel advisories on most government sites about traveling in Thailand, dated as recently as yesterday. Google Thailand travel warnings 2011 if you are interested.

Does the Government truly believe that it can replace almost 14 million sex tourists per year with 14 million tourists that are only interested in sightseeing, Temples, restaurants, golf and staying at expensive hotels?

Look how they came unstuck with the joke Thailand Elite card.

This policy has been proven not to work. Using Chiang Mai as an example, tourism has been in sharp decline over the years due to the clampdowns of the prim and proper brigade.

The original way of thinking was, to encourage middle aged tourists, with families, that would join expensive golf clubs, eat at posh restaurants, stay at 5 star hotels, go on exclusive tours, go to bed at 9.00pm and will be tempted into purchasing condos or making some other sorts of investments in Thailand.

Yes, it does seem that good old Mr Thaksin`s policies of having a spic and span clean image for Thailand are knocking at the door once again.

Once implemented, then the Government will ask; we wonder what happened to the tourists?

Thailand has for many years been renowned for it`s sex industry, just as Las Vagas in famous for it`s gambling casinos.

Making drastic changes will not work, because for those living in the West can obtain much better deals in other holiday destinations, cheaper, nearer and have more to offer than Thailand.

Oooh, ok ok, now I understand, thanks to your friend, google. So them estimate 200.000 prostitute in all thailand? My personal opinion is there's more in bangkok only.

Not in our lifetimes.

Try to stop sex tourism! Give me a break. Men from all over the world come her for Thai girls and some for boys, and many for golf. Take the girls out of the equation and what will be the result?

For a family beach holiday there are many places to go.

boys and golf

I took my two boys (7 & 11 years old at the time) to Thailand for two months a couple years back, and they loved it. In addition to the family fun like elephant treks etc., we all got massages every day (no happy endings for the boys obviously), played pool in many a beer bar and hung out with lots of friendly professional ladies. Without exception, the ladies loved the boys as if they were their own, buying them food and drinks etc. One of the best aspects of the LOS in my view is the lack of differentiation between what is "adult" and what is "family." Within certain common-sense boundaries, of course, (I would no more want my kids exposed to pornography or violence than any other father), one of the nicest things about Thailand is its tolerant, accepting attitude to the realities of sexuality and not labeling it as "bad." It would be a shame to see that actually threatened.

Pretty gloomy assessment. Looks like we'll have to reincarnate Walt Disney for this one.
