Lee Aldhouse, who is wanted for the August 2010 stabbing murder of American Dashawn Longfellow in Phuket's Rawai subdistrict.

PHUKET: The extradition of British kick-boxer Lee Aldhouse to Thailand to stand trial for the August 2010 stabbing murder of US Marine Dashawn Longfellow now seems inevitable, British media have reported

Britain's Sunday Mirror today reported a source in the British Home Office as saying: “The only way he could have realistically avoided extradition is if he would have faced the death penalty if found guilty. But the Thai Government have assured us that he will not.”

Mr Aldhouse has 14 days to appeal the ruling, according to the report.

Nicknamed "The Pitbull", Mr Aldhouse managed to flee Thailand through Cambodia, but was later arrested at Heathrow Airport in London.

I am surprised his lawyers have not tried to get the US to charge him and get him extradited there ... but not sure even with the victim being a serviceman that the US could hold any jurisdiction.

I thought the fact he allegedly murdered a US citizen gives them jurisdiction worldwide

All they have to do is show the pictures of the guy who was left in the Pattaya cells to rot and die show the UK those pcitures and he will never be extradited.

If I was his lawyer I would be able to find just on the internet MANY HORRIFIC examples of Human Rights abuses here in Thailand and when the UK government cronies woudl never extradite.

Either way I hope they do cause this thug deserves a good lesson and a Thai prison where he cant inject his steroids and instead fo the thug he will become the victim a great lesson for all bullys to learn.

Does the UK have the death penalty? If so, than all 3 countries have the death penalty. This cowardly murder should warrant death, regardless where it occurred. Next time you got your arrogant butt kick by a combat hardened US Marine, and as embarrassing as it may be, just go home.

I think you may well be right. He'll argue his human rights will be violated in a Thai prison because he won't be allowed his color tv, xbox and mobile 'phone !!

The UK does not have the death penalty, and will not extradite its citizens to a country that does, unless the prosecution in that country promises not to seek the death penalty. That is why the Thai prosecutors are not seeking it.

If he gets put in a Thai prison, he may wish he had received the death sentence instead.

Exactly.

It likely is a fate worse than death,

or death by other means, if he is the arrogant juice-head (steroids) he appears to be. Plus being a Muay Thai fighter, how many will want to prove he is not as good as they are....How long will this nutter last in the general population before his premature exit is assured?

That would be tragic, but at least it would force the Thai judicial system to face the fact that the rest of the developed world does not take them seriously. Hopefully the loss of face will motivate them to clean up their act, if they ever want to sit at the adults' table. I'm not holding my breath though.

If he is guilty, then a thai jail cell for life is a decent compensation for his behavior. When a man who is a trained fighter attacks another man, and beats him to death, then he is simply a goon, a goomba, and a wannabe gangster. Of course, there are few Brits that fit that category.

There's not a chance this guy will be extradited and the decision isn't up to the British, they're just playing along here going through the motions to appease the Thai's who are quite within their rights to demand extradition and justice for a crime committed within their borders. This UK tabloid paper has very little grip on the current situation and often report stories that could be regarded as 'utter bullshit', there are many newspapers like this in the UK.

He will of course first appeal this to the high court, an appeal that he will most likely lose. His next stage will be to launch an appeal to the European court of Human Rights in Strasbourg which will almost certainly put a block on this extradition. It will take years to happen but it will happen nevertheless. He will stay in prison in the UK during the meantime.

When zydeco says this :

If he gets put in a Thai prison, he may wish he had received the death sentence instead.

This is the precise reason why the extradition won't be allowed by the Strasbourg court.

Ask yourself, where is 'Abu Hamza al-Masri' and why is he there and not likely to be going anywhere soon. For those who don't know : His extradition to the US was blocked by the European Court of Human Rights as the conditions at a 'Supermax' prison aren't up to scratch. Ask yourself the question, do Thai prisons treat their prisoner better than prisoners are treated in US Supermax prisons and I think you will find the answer there.

All they have to do is provide some kind of doubt that Thai penal system doesn't treat prisoners with the level of care that happens inside the EU which from what I've read is certainly the case. Photographs of British prisoners chained to walls and apparently being left to potentially starve to death don't help the Thai's case here one bit.

The British government do have a history of fighting these cases in the European courts as you would expect and have a track record of losing them.

A few things.

A) Thailand is on the Human Rights Watch List for countless violations, especially regarding prison conditions. His attorney's will probably be all over that in an effort to stop it.

B) The U.S. actually DOES have jurisdiction, and grounds to request he be sent there for trial, due to the fact that he not only killed a U.S. Citizen, but a member of the U.S. Military who was on medical leave from active duty. I think maybe they might be waiting to see what happens with the extradition to Thailand. If this scumbag is able to successfully stop being sent to Thailand, then the U.S. will probably start extradition proceedings to have him brought there for trial.

As a former Marine myself (20 yrs), I would love to see them send this guy to visit the unit Dashawn was part of. Trust me, justice would be served.

No the UK doesn't, except for treason i think - The right to life is rightly sanctioned by the government irrespective of the crime. Having served alongside US Marines in my Army days I know they are professional in every way and are mainly a great bunch of lads who take pride in their work.

Unfortunatly for the family of the deceased this British lad won't be sent to a Thai prision as it goes against all basic tenements of the UK and EU rights system. My own view is that the US should seek his extradition to the US to stand trial and be placed in a US prison if found guilty . Not sure if that will fly legally but i think it is the best way for justice to be served. I think you'll fund being a foreign national, in the US prison system, convicted of killing a US Marine will not be a nice experience either.

he was stabbed to death

and the end of the day, if the UK gverment cant even deport back rapists and murders from the UK to there home countries due to the Euro Court of Human Rights, i highly doubt Lee will be sent back to thailand

You might want to read the original story. This scumbag "tough guy" started a fight with a combat Marine fresh from Afghanistan, and got his ass handed to him. Totally embarrassed, he left the bar, went to 7-11, stole 2 knives, followed the Marine back to where he was staying, knocked on the door and when the Marine opened the door, this piece of cowardly shit stabbed him to death in front of the Marine's g/f, then ran like a bitch.

Tough to sell that new age huggy kissy nonsense when there is a cut and dried murder case hanging overhead. Big difference between deporting an illegal who is staying with their family, and returning a murderer who was arrested at the airport fleeing from justice.

The fact that the UK government already negotiated the extradition to exclude the death penalty suggests he is going. If they weren't intending to let him go, they would not have gone to the effort of negotiating the extradition. They simply would have said no.

Honestly, we can't have a double standard either. We in the west are cracking down on Thailand as a haven for criminals, demanding they arrest and extradite our wanted men. Thailand has so far been cooperating to some degree. We can't be two faced. We have to return the favor. I think pressure on the Thai government to bring this guy to justice will be quite strong. The US doesn't look kindly on its servicemen being knifed by a well known drug addicted bully while they are on leave.

To answer some other posts. I am hardly a lawyer, but I don't see how the US could have any jurisdiction here other than political pressure. There is a law in the US that a US citizen can be prosecuted for class A felonies (severe crimes such as murder, rape and pedophilia) no matter where they occur in the world, but I don't see how they can apply this to a non US citizen? Any armchair TV lawyers out there care to set us straight on that?

Anyway. Regardless of your leanings or where your national loyalties lay (America hating seeming to be a major passtime on TV, second only to Thai hating) A murderer is a murderer and they need to be brought to justice, no matter where it happens. Taking the life of another human being outside the auspices of the state is completely unacceptable. It is an insult to the very fabric of society, and can not be tolerated.

I don't think so...since the victim was traveling as a private citizen, both parties were private citizens. Military or not, the US is less help than most in this type of situation.
