AFTER A TEST DRIVE SENIOR MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED GEARBOX OVERHAUL AT APPROX 50,000BAHT AND WILL TAKE 1 MONTH OR GET SECOND HAND GEAR BOX FOR ABOUT 45000BAHT BUT ONLY 1 WEEK GAURANTEE ON IT. OR NEW GEARBOX FOR 200000BAHT. AS THE CAR IS 1999 MODEL AND ONLY WORTH ABOUT 250000BAHT I WAS A LITTLE CONCERNED AT ANY OF THE OPTIONS.... SO, I PHONED A FRIEND WHO DID A CHECK ON THAIVISA SITE FOR ME AND CAME UP WITH A GREAT MECHANIC CALLED MR SAKHDA...I TOOK MY CAR TO HIM, HE TEST DROVE IT, THEN EMPTIED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSHED IT CLEAN, CLEANED THE SOLENOID, PUT IN NEW FLUID AND TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE,,,,,,,PROBLEM FIXED!!!! HE GAVE ME A BILL FOR 800 BAHT WHICH INCLUDED 600 FOR THE FLUID.... I DONT USUALLY TIP IN GARAGES BUT I THOUGHT 200BAHT TIP WAS THE LEAST I COULD GIVE....SO JOB COST ME 1000BAHT INSTEAD OF HONDA ESTIMATE OF 50000BAHT...... I WATCHED MR SAKHDA DO THE WORK HE WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND CLEAN AND THOROUGH THROUGHOUT. HE SPEAKS GOOD ENOUGH ENGLISH TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING AND I LEARNT THAT HE HAS WORKED OVERSEAS ON MANY DIFFERENT MODELS OF VEHICLES. I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN MY CAR TO HONDA FOR ANY WORKS BEFORE MEETING MR SAKHDA....FROM NOW I WILL ALWAYS BE GOING TO MR SAKHDA FIRST..... I once had a so called mechanic who works out of that big place almost next to Lotus on the sukhumvit (specialises in Mercs) tell me that an overheating problem i had on my NV was due to a shot water pump and the head gasket had blown bla ba ba..anyhow it turned out that the only problem i had was an air lock in the system which was caused when i had changed the thermostat, Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He works from home which is unfortunately some distance out of Pattaya however he may be prepared to collect your vehicle and return it upon completion of the work. He, also, is a ery skilled and clever,conscientious mechanical genius, who works out of his work-shop/garage on Threppasit Road. About half-way between Sukhumvit <> Thepraya Road, on the South-Side of Threppasit Road. The sign over his shop reads: "Sak-Garage". joedee Posted September 11, 2011 Author Share Posted September 11, 2011 joedee, take the car back to the honda garage and confront the manager with their incompetence! yes, i felt like doing that straight away...however it would'nt benefit me showing him up in that way. i will probably need to go there again at some point. they do treat me quite well there and i do have the personal number of the guy who misdiagnosed. he has turned up at my house on 2 occasions to assist with a problem in the past... mainly i just want people to know to get a second opinion on expensive repairs from honda.. champken Posted September 11, 2011 Share Posted September 11, 2011 Not being very mechanically minded myself and running an older car which from time to time may develop a problem, i think the best policy is at first is to try and identify the problem by way of internet searches and or pick the knowledgeable brains of some of the members on TV or other forums, that way you can then go and investigate possible prices for any spare parts that you might need and then go and ask a couple of Thai mechanics how much to fit or do this? and then watch him do it (preferably where you live) so giving him less opportunity to pull the scam of it also needs this or that and because your cars with him, he has you by the nuts and can inflate the bill accordingly 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

just_another_guy Posted January 21, 2012 Share Posted January 21, 2012 Choosename... I googled your Thai script and from my experience (which ain't much) you are talking about a distributor. It is a steel tube type thing about 12 inches long and connects to gearing inside the engine. It has on the top part (that you see covered with a black plastic cap as you look at it ---looking into the engine compartment. Are you sure that is what you need? The reason I ask is because distributors (distributes electric current to the points and onto the spark plugs are NOT used much these days)--sparks plugs yes---points and condesors no. Is your Toyota like 15 or more years old? I hope someone with more experience can answer your question. Back in the day (35 years ago) I remember having to replace points and plugs on my old American cars...but newer cars don't have points and as far as I know don't have distributors. Absolutely show them the error of their ways, but I also don't remember seeing your thread in the motor forum? Next time OP post your problem there and someone will give an idea of what it might be and how much it should cost before you take it in. I just repaired a tranny that had a small leak that besides needing a new screen and fluid it had leaked out most of the fluid so it wouldn't shift, the previous owner thought it was major but it was only the new screen some fluid and 4 new O-rings on top of the tranny that seal off the cooler problem, having repaired it now, only 1200b problem solved.. Joedee they treat you quite well so they have your trust for when something potentially big like this pops up and you go for it hook line and sinker which to your credit for whatever reason you didn't. I'd never bring my car back there again and give them another bite at the bait.. The guy having your address and being to your house before though, is a bit alarming.. JFYI Even 45,000b for a used unit is expensive so they weren't cutting you any slack or giving you any respect.. I've used him and although at the time I felt very good about the service, after a few months it seemed like what we paid him to do was not done correctly at all. I'm no mechanic so that's all I'll be saying on that. He does seem like a very nice guy none the less. I'm still looking for another, well recommended mechanic and have yet to find one. He did a bunch of work on our brakes and after the break light kept staying on so brought it back in to him and he made it go off and then a few months later it is always on again so the wife took it back into him today and he said it was due to low brake fluid level. Now not sure where the brake fluid is running off to cause that was one of the things he was sure to top up when he did all the prior brake work. In any case.. Also, I would like to find a garage new one of the spare parts sellers on Sukhumvit to repair the car immediately without having to go and come back, do you think that it is possible ? Thanks.
