Recommended Posts

Im looking to get a colonoscopy done in Bangkok but Im not sure where to go. I have very limited funds and this is not covered by my insurance. In the USA they told me it would cost around $1700 usd and thats too much for me to afford so Im looking to get it done while I am in Bangkok. Thanks for any advice.

You might check out the current cost at Vibhavadi out on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road at the intersection with Ngam Wong Wan, opposite Kassert U.

http://www.vibhavadi.com/english/index.php

Here's what it ran a few years back:

7 July 2007 Vibhavadi Colonoscopy b 16,091 $474.80

BTW, this included a one night stay in a nice private room. Checked in in the afternoon, evening spent watching cable TV and gulping down there liquid cleanser and trips to the crapper. Did the deed the next morning, and home after lunch.

Send them an email to check cost. Be sure to ask if they still like a night in the hospital, possible you might be able to cut that out. My U.S. based insurance covered this.

I had one done in BNH (one of the more expensive hospitals) about a year ago. Cost about B20,000 (I think) which is more or less $450. Barring the enema trauma, it wasn't an unpleasant experience at all.

Thanks Mac, I will contact them.

Can I ask if they gave you anesthesia during the procedure, as in knocked you out?

Thanks,

Robert

Sure did, sleepy time, and woke up in a bit with no hangover.

FYI, a couple years later I had an Endoscopy, just had to ask the doc if they used the same instrument, and if so, was it cleaned beforehand.

Mac I would say thats a darned good price for an overnight sty, anesthesia, and procedure. I was told that insurance wouldnt pay for it unless there were symptoms such as blood in stool, etc.

No, mate. They gave me some salty tasting stuff to take home and drink the night before, which was excruciating in that I was awake all night emptying my bowels. Then I showed up at the hospital around 8am, where another nurse gave me 2 enemas. After leaving there with my pride and arsehol_e in tatters, they sent me down to the 'operating room', where the deed was done. After recovery etc, I was back up speaking with the Doctor, and was out of

the hospital by around 1pm, clutching photos of my intestines. Very efficient.

Happily, the stuff they gave me to drink wasn't all that bad tasting, just bland.

Oh joy, now I know what to expect. How long did it take you guys to return to normal? Were you able to function the day after the test? Did you have to stay close to a bathroom?

You're worrying too much, matey. I was recovered and out of the hospital by early afternoon, functioning perfectly, albeit a lot lighter, and even drove myself home. Probably the only thing I did notice was some unpleasant wind in my gut when I did eat later that day, and some tremendous farts. I also remember the feeling after the colonoscopy, as the sedative made me feel very 'nice', for want of a better word.

I priced these recently for my sister. Best price was St. Louis Hospital. I believe around 12,000 - 13,000 Baht with ward accomodation, would of course be more for private room. You're only in the bed a few hours so big waste of money IMO.

Although it is an out same day procedure you have to go through the Admitting Dept and they will start off showing you their most expensive suites. You have to be very firm to get the inexpensive rooms/ward beds.

Sheryl, thanks for the info. Do you happen to know how many people are in a ward?

I had both done a few weeks ago in BNH...a look up and a look down. They put me out as I have problems when the dentist touches the back of my mouth, no way could I swallow a tube! The total cost was not a lot over 30000 Baht and that included in overnight.

Is BNH Bangkok Hospital? That seems like a good price for both plus a night in the hospital.
