Lite Beer
CP All apologises for goods shortage The Nation CP All Plc today issued a statement to apologise all clients, as shelves at many 7-Eleven outlets are left empty despite high demand. Banyat Kamnoonwat, assistant vice president of CP All, attributed the shortage to severe flooding which blocks transportation of goods, the lower production by some suppliers, and the historical spike in demand. "The company is trying to fix this problem. For example, we are ordering goods from provincial distribution centres, securing more bigger trucks and looking for substitute goods. We believe that these measures would help ease consumers’ difficulties to some extent. Once the water subsides, we’ll do everything to restore the goods availability to the pre-flood level," he said. -- The Nation 2011-10-

Lite Beer
Evacuation center at Don Mueang Airport overloaded BANGKOK, 22 October 2011 (NNT) – The flood evacuation center at Don Mueang Airport has exceeded its capacity by 700 persons while certain types of necessities have become short. Additional evacuees are urged to go to nearby shelters instead. According to a volunteer of the Mirror Foundation, there are over 3,200 evacuees at the sheltering center at Don Mueang Airport’s International Terminal, which is more than the maximum capacity of 2,500 persons. As more flood-affected people in need of shelter are expected to arrive, the center has recommended them to instead head over to nearby shelters, such as Kasetsart University, Sarawitthaya School, Horwang School and North Bangkok University. The evacuation center at Don Mueang Airport reportedly has only six shower rooms which are inadequate for the current number of occupants. There are also no cooking areas, leaving the evacuees to have to rely on donated food. A number of items are now in need, including shower and laundry supplies, sandals, undergarments, portable urinals and adult diapers -- NNT 2011-10-

george
Chao Phraya River rises to flood many areas in Bangkok BANGKOK, Oct 22 – Water from the Chao Phraya River on Saturday has overflowed into several areas of the capital, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said, urging officials to warn residents along the river to be on high alert for possible evacuation. Sukhumbhand and authorities inspected Siriraj Hospital after water pouring in from the Chao Phraya River has spread slowly and breached flood embankments at Siriraj Hospital. Meanwhile, a dyke at Kheaw Khai Ka Pier by Bang Kra Bue intersection ruptured, spilling water from Chao Phraya River onto Sam Sen Road 40 cm deep, while Rajinibon School was under 20-30 cm of water. Metropolitan Electricity Authority workers have cut electricity around the area for safety reason. Traffic, both inbound and outbound, on Sam Sen Road was still moving, but police later closed it as water inundated both sides of the road. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) staff tried to contain the water at Bang Kra Bue intersection by using crushed rocks and sandbags. So far, the reasons behind the sharp rise in water level of the Chao Phraya River has remained unknown and unidentified. Following the incidents, the governor called a meeting at 6 pm, joined by BMA executives and relevant agencies, aiming to find out related causes and to map out measures dealing with the overflow of water. Sukhumbhand said that he has ordered directors of districts along the Chao Phraya River to warn residents, particularly those living outside the flood prevention wall, to be on high alert for possible evacuation to temporary shelters prepared by the BMA. As Siriraj Hospital officials coordinated with city hall to help reinforce its dyke from 2.8 metres to 3 metres high, the governor said that he will speed up the reinforcement, emphasising that the hospital is a main venue to prevent water from overflowing. george
MOPH steps up medical care, 720,000 flood patients recorded BANGKOK, 22 October 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health is providing flood-affected residents with more access to medical services after the number of people falling ill from water-borne diseases has surpassed 720,000. Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri confirmed that public health officials in all flood-hit provinces had been giving medical assistance to flood victims in accordance with the Ministry’s flood relief plan. In Nonthaburi province where the flood situation has become critical, he said more mobile medical units had been sent into the area while a makeshift hospital had been set up at a car care center in Bang Bua Thong district. The hospital has six patient beds with a medical team comprising four doctors and eight nurses on standby. Over the past 24 hours, it has catered to over 200 patients, four of whom were in serious conditions and had to be sent to Pak Kret Hospital. Even though Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai Hospital is still open after being blocked by two-foot high floodwater in the front, Mr Witthaya said the Public Health Ministry would help facilitate the hospital’s services by launching another temporary hospital in a nearby location. The Minister also assured that there would not be any shortage of medical personnel during this time as more of them had been called in from other provinces unaffected by floods. The Public Health Ministry has been sending at least 200 mobile teams every day to all 37 flood-ravaged provinces nationwide. According to the statistics, 720,128 flood victims have become sick; most of them are diagnosed with athlete’s foot. A total of 97,520 people have been found with depression; 1,237 of them need to be closely monitored due to their tendency to commit suicide. -- NNT 2011-10-
