Shelters in Nine Provinces Arranged to Accommodate Flood Victims

The Government has prepared shelters in nine provinces to accommodate flood victims from Bangkok, if the flooding situation worsens.

According to the Flood Relief Operations Center, the nine provinces include Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Chachoengsao, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, and Nahon Ratchasima.

Most shelters in these provinces are located in educational institutions, military camps, and large government offices. Authorities have already coordinated the arrangements of the shelters, and the Army and other relevant agencies have worked out a contingency plan to cope with the situation. However, a warning will be issued in advance, so that local residents will prepare to gather in certain spots, where officials will take them out of the flood-risk areas. The Ministry of Transport and the Army will work together to take them to the shelters in the nine provinces.

Army Commander-in-Chief, General Prayuth Chan-O-Cha, said that His Majesty the King and members of the Royal Family were very concerned over the plights of flood victims. He said that His Majesty had told the military to fully assist the people in every way possible. The Army Commander-in-Chief stressed that the military would work closely with the Government in bringing the flood problem under control, saying that soldiers had been mobilized from various parts of the country to help distressed residents.

The flooding in Bangkok is likely to last between 15 days and one month. The Flood Relief Operations Center said that evacuation was necessary in only certain areas of Bangkok and that not all districts of the city needed to be evacuated. The police were instructed to step up efforts to look after the people’s property and deal strictly with incidents of theft.

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority, meanwhile, is confident that the floods would not affect power distribution to the inner districts of Bangkok, so offices, shopping centers, hospitals, and other facilities in the areas are still able to continue their operations.

In order to facilitate the travel of passengers to Suvarnabhumi Airport during the flooding situation, Thai Airways International is providing additional check-in counters at the Airport Rail Link in the Makkasan station. Passengers for Thai Airways International may check-in their luggage and personal belongings at THAI’s check-in counters, located on the third floor of the Airport Rail Link. The service began on October 28, from 07.00 to 21.00 hr, with the exception of passengers traveling to the United States on the Bangkok – Los Angeles route, as they are required to check-in at Suvarnabhumi Airport only.

Thai Airways International still operates flights as normal at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Please call 02-356-1111 for flight information.

Wittaya assures good care for patients transferred from hospitals in Bangkok

The Nation on Sunday

Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri assured yesterday that critical patients transferred from flood-hit hospitals to other places would receive good care and the ministry would arrange their trips home once flooding recedes.

Witthaya visited transferred patients at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital yesterday. He said the ministry had transferred 340 critical patients from flood-hit facilities to other hospitals between Tuesday and yesterday. He said the patients would receive standard treatment and the ministry would arrange transport to their hometowns after the situation returned to normal.

In the week to yesterday, 122 patients were sent to this northeastern province from Bangkok hospitals. Some 99 of them were sent to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, with 28 allowed to go home.

Witthaya urged the provincial governor to provide free temporary shelter and arrange for patients' trips home after the flooding ends.

The hospital was well equipped and had staff to provide them good care, he said. It was capable of taking another 50 critical patients.

Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima is caring for six chronic kidney patients from Bangkok and could take another 45, he said.

Meanwhile, 16 critical patients from Bangkok's Bhumibol Adulyadej, Lerdsin and Rajavithi hospitals have been sent to Udon Thani.

Flood Management on the Right Track (30/10/2011)

Justice Minister, Police General Pracha Promnog, in his capacity as Director of the Flood Relief Operations Center, has stressed that the Government was on the right track in flood management in the country.

He called a meeting of relevant agencies to follow up on the operations to deal with the current flooding situation on October 29, when the Flood Relief Operations Center was moved from Don Mueang Airport to the Energy Complex on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, where the Ministry of Energy is located.

The new location is well-protected from the flooding, and it is about two meters above mean sea level. The hotline of the center remains 111 ext. 5 (ext. 9 for English).

As for efforts to control the situation in Bangkok, all responsible agencies are accelerating water drainage to the Chao Phraya River and the Gulf of Thailand during the period of high tides, from October 25 to November 5. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra stated that the situation in flood-hit areas in the city was expected to improve in early November. She urged local residents to stay updated with information released by the Flood Relief Operations Center and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Speaking in the program “Yingluck Government Meets the People,” broadcast on Radio Thailand and National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (Television Channel 11), the Prime Minister explained that the Government was speeding up water drainage in both the eastern and western parts of Bangkok. The efforts would help reduce the volume of water flowing into the city and would control the water level at a low level, as well.

She said that the flooding situation in the central region is returning to normalcy, with a reduced volume of water passing through the Chao Phraya Dam. The water level in Ayutthaya province, particularly in Bang Sai district, is also decreasing, thus reducing the water volume in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and northern Bangkok.

The Prime Minister said that 27 provinces are still suffering from floods, while 36 others are starting rehabilitation programs. More than 9,800 factories inside and outside industrial estates have been damaged. They are located in eight provinces, namely Chai Nat, Nakhon Sawan, Nonthaburi, Pathum thani, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Ang Thong, and Uthai Thani. Provincial governors whose provinces did not face the problem of stagnant flood water have been instructed to help the flood-stricken areas in Bangkok and nearby provinces by sending food supplies.

Many major tourist destinations, such as those in Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Samui Island in Surat Thani, have not been affected by the current floods. They all welcome visitors.

Angry residents demolish part of Waterworks Canal embankment

Residents of a community behind Nawong Temple in Bangkok's Don Mueang district demolished a part of the Waterworks Canal embankment Sunday, causing floodwaters to contaminate raw water for making tap water.

The floodwaters also caused the water in the Waterworks Canal to overflow an inundate parts of Chaeng Wattana Road.

The part from an intersection from a bridge over the Waterworks Canal to the road in front of Mongkut Wattana Hospital was under about 40 centimetres-high water.
