Lite Beer
More than 500 die in Thai floods BANGKOK, November 6, 2011 (AFP) - The death toll from Thailand's worst floods in decades jumped above 500 on Sunday as the seemingly unstoppable waters crept deeper into Bangkok, swamping main roads and threatening the city centre. The government said the disaster has now killed 506 people nationwide -- an increase of 60 from the figure reported a day earlier. So far no deaths in Bangkok have been reported in the official toll. At least 20 percent of the megacity is already submerged in floodwater contaminated by rubbish, dead animals and industrial waste, raising fears about outbreaks of disease in the densely populated metropolis of 12 million people. With the slowly advancing water now just a few kilometres (miles) away from Bangkok's business and tourists districts, authorities are seeking to push the floods through waterways in the east and west of the capital and out to sea. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Saturday that the city's economic and political heartland would stay mostly dry and was only at risk of "minor and brief" flooding. She said a six-kilometre (four-mile) flood wall of huge sandbags had been erected in northern Bangkok and more water pumps had been installed in other parts of the city to keep the downtown area dry. The floodwaters have already inundated the busy Lat Phrao intersection on the northern edge of the city centre, forcing the closure of the Central Plaza shopping mall. Nearby Chatuchak weekend market -- a popular tourist attraction -- was open for business on Sunday but many traders stayed away after warnings from officials to be on alert for possible inundations. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been told to evacuate a number of Bangkok districts but many have chosen to stay despite risks including electrocution, disease and lack of food and drinking water. The floods, triggered by unusually heavy monsoon rains that began three months ago, have damaged the homes and livelihoods of millions across the kingdom. -- (c) Copyright AFP 2011-11-

Lite Beer
Talk about flood relief! Veena Thoopkrajae The Nation on Sunday Anurak Suchat's 'judnak' bag is an instant toilet when the potty's out of reach One of the first things that comes to mind in a flood crisis is making sure everyone has enough to eat and drink. Much later we think about how they can go to the bathroom when there are no toilets. Award-winning designer Anurak Suchat thought about it, though, and realised that the portable toilets being distributed - even the ones on rafts or made with folding cardboard - wouldn't be enough. So he conceived the bright orange judnak bag, using the term for "heavy task". A bundle of them fits easily into relief packages, and they certainly do bring relief: With a judnak, you can do your business virtually anytime and anywhere. As well, once the floodwater recedes, the judnak bags won't linger among the expected mountain of garbage. It's biodegradable and will disappear within six months. Using the bag is as easy as snapping it over the rim of a small bucket or a large plastic bottle with the neck cut away. Then you tie up the top of the bag and pop it into a judtem, a larger version of the judnak. It can stay there during the inundation or be buried if you have the chance. Anurak came up with the idea a few weeks ago and with four friends - one of them in Hong Kong - set up a Facebook page to spread the word. There's no intention to make money, but he needed to find suppliers and financial backers. The biodegradable plastic is easy enough to get, but he wants to make up to three million bags, and that's going to need sponsors with cash. "There's no patent - I'm more than willing to let any big company take over the idea and produce them," Anurak says. "Or they could just contact us to help finance the production." So far Bt100, 000 has come from Sansiri Plc and Bt200,000 from IRPC Plc. Judnak bags are not available for individuals, only organisations like the Red Cross that work directly with flood victims. Anurak's group recently distributed thousands of packages to the Army and at Chulalongkorn University, each containing 30 judnak and three judtem. PACK A BAG << You can volunteer to pack the bags or you can donate money. Find out how on the "judnakbag" Facebook page. << Donations can also go to "Arurak Suchat for Judnak bag project" at K-bank 613-2-121565, Praditmanutham branch, or SCB 402-791358-9, Crystal Park branch. -- The Nation 2011-11-

Lite Beer
Bangkok governor announces more evacuation areas in four districts BANGKOK, Nov 6 - Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra on Sunday declared more evacuation zones in four districts as floodwaters keep rising, while expressing concern over western Bangkok, as some sluice gates were out of order. The governor said the additional evacuation zones are Pakklong Phasicharoen, Bang Wa and Koohasawan sub-districts in Phasi Charoen district; the whole of Nong Kaem district; Saensaeb sub-district of Minburi district; and Klong Sib, Koofangnua and Kokfad sub-districts of Nong Jok district. Mr Sukhumbhand also announced special monitoring areas for Taladplu sub-district in Thonburi district, Lat Phrao sub-district in Lat Phrao district and Minburi sub-district of Minburi district. The governor stated the Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) has provided more water pumping machines to help drain water in eastern Bangkok as the situation is still worrying due to rising water level. Mr Sukhumbhand also voiced concern over the western part of the capital after sluice gates in the North and West were found out of order in 14 spots. If repairs cannot be done, the governor noted, more floodwater will pour into the Thonburi area which is already severely affected by flood and may affect Rama 2 Road, which is the last available highway to the southern part of Thailand after Phetchkasem Road and Boromarajajonani have been flooded.
