What should be going on in Chiang Rai?

Recommended Posts

Hi.It was mentioned to me some time ago, by a certain dr. that we have no source of news and information about whats happening around Chiang Rai.

I am sure that there are plenty of events going on that we would like to be informed about.

I would suggest that we post a heading of some kind on this page, and add to it as we get information.

For instance, for the last few days we have had a large multicultural festival with participants from Laos, Burmah, China, and Thailand.

Wednesday was Loy Kratong day and yesterday was Lady Kratong day with beautiful ladies parading through the town on floats.

Anything happening tomorrow?

Very good idea about advertising happenings here.

But there is another channel too:

Everybody in Chiangrai wants to know what is happening aroud the city.

Everybody says that CR needs a magazine like the numerous ones already existing in CM, to advertise events and make reports about social life, etc...

But apart from "wanting", nobody in CR does anything about it.

Chiangmai Mail and Good Morning Chiangmai News LOVE to cover what is happening (or what will happen) in Chiangrai.

The only thing to do is to write them an email and maybe send pictures.

If you do that, it will be reported in their paper and online version.

The recent Doi Tung race was reported. The classic car weekend will be reported this week, ... Just need to send them the information.

It's up to the CR residents to put their city on the map. It just costs a few minutes to write an email.

It has been said already a few times that these newspapers and magazines want CR news, but nobody looks like interested, unfortunately.

gerry1011,

You have made a good post....but.....this thread is about what IS HAPPENING in Chiangrai and your post is mostly about what IS NOT HAPPENING in Chiangrai or at best what MIGHT HAPPEN in Chiangrai. I'm not wanting to rain on your parade since rain IS NOT HAPPENING in Chiangrai right now....just a friendly suggestion is what IS HAPPENING right now and that suggestion is to start another thread to discuss what MIGHT HAPPEN in Chiangrai soon.

I was encouraging you to start another topic to organize an effort to get the happenings in Chiang Rai either included in mags already running or to start one specifically in Chiang Rai....but....having read what I posted again it is clear that my meaning is not. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

As to the topic at hand: there must be something happening at the art gallery in town....if I knew what it was I'd post it here....but I don't....I do know about the rice harvest and it is still happening but don't procrastinate too long or you'll miss out!!! And just to give you some lead time for the next big event; soybean planting will be in the first half of January so talk to you local farmer now to confirm a date and pencil it in on the calendar today!!!

The editorial part of David's Chiang Mai magazines has the function to fill the space inbetween the advertissements. It is a free magazine which derives its income from the adds. With a deadline more than three weeks before printing it never can be informing 'hot of the needle'. It's all news 'afterwards'.

I wrote an article of five hundred words about the Doi Tung Bicycle Race.

'Thank you' was David's response and he put a photo in his magazine with a caption of twenty words.

I went to interview the managers of the Maekok River Village Outdoor Education Centre in Tha Ton. They are really doing a great thing. It took me a day and I drove more than 160 kilometres for it. Do you really think I am going to spend more time and effort on writing an article when it might be reduced to three or four lines?

Of course David would like to have some articles on Chiang Rai to be able to attract advertisers from Chiang Rai. But is his interest really coninciding with ours?

Five years ago I was filling an English language page in a local newspaper for more than one and a half year.

Believe me, it doesn't work.

This Chiang Rai Forum can work better! There are no price tags attached.

It is not depending on advertissements, there is no money involved. There are no other interests other than our own interests.

We don't need a Chiang Mai magazine editor to select what information we want to share. We just do ourselves!!!!!

It sounds horrible, but for the time being I am living together with a cat.

I can't ask my cat to translate the banners which are hanging everywhere in town.

But there must be some of you who are living together with Thai reading partners.

Please ask them what is on the banners and forward this information to all of us!

Thanks Chownah!

Look at the topic 'Art in Chiang Rai'.

It is very fine work. It is Thai art, Buddhist art.

Today I went to the new Gallery of Gare Garon, the bookshop (main street, Old Dutch, then the little travel agency of the lovely and helpfull Khun Porn, then another little shop and then Gare Garon).

Really great! And very affordable prices. I love this this little gallery (it is upstairs).

I asked the ladies who run it to send me information about the next exposition and I will immediatly forward it to the readers of this forum.

Thanks agian!

Please pay attention Gerry 1011!

The only medium reporting on forehand on the Chiang Rai Classic Car Weekend was ........ yes, THIS FORUM!

For knowing what has been happening weeks ago you can consult the Chiang Mai News (news?). Also in the Bangkok Post of to-day you can read about the same event, happening one week ago.

This forum wants to inform about things which are going to happen, giving us an opportunity to participate or to go and look!

Please understand the difference!

My friend Limbo, let me disagree with you.

The Chiangrai Classic Car Weekend appeared two month in a row as a preview

in Good Morning Chiangmai News, it also appeared three weeks before the event in Chiangmai Mail, and about one month before the event in Bangkok Post.

The agenda of 9Art Gallery also appears in Good Morning Chiangmai News.

Now, being based is CM, these are certainly not the easiest source of information, I admit.

Whilst I agree with Gerry about Good morning ChiangMai news or other publications in Chiang Mai, being good sources of information, they are for Chiang Mai not for Chiang Rai even though they occassionally will put in something about Chiang Rai.

We need information about Chiang Rai, what on , and one of the best ways to do it is here.

This week from 25th Nov to end of the month is Chiang rai food festival.

There will be a lanna style show/dance in front of Sammarki school/Saenphu Hotel on Friday..........more details to follow

Yes Khun Gerry1011,

A serious omission from my side.

"The only medium reporting on forehand on the Chiang Rai Classic Car Weekend was ........ yes, THIS FORUM!"

.... I wrote.

The correct version should have been:

The only medium in/of Chiang Rai reporting on forehand on the Chiang Rai Classic Car Weekend was ........ yes, THIS FORUM!

As also Tayto pointed out: Even if 10 magazines and newspapers in Chiang Mai give information about things going to happen in Chiang Rai, we won't know.

Unless these 10 magazines and newspapers are distributed in Chiang Rai :o

How I torture my brains, I don't see the feasibility of a Chiang Rai magazine. For years people have been talking about it, to no result.

A very limited 'newsletter' maybe? Help me hope!

A combination of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in one magazine or newspaper would be neither fish, flesh, nor a good red herring. See the existing examples!

Ok, I will continue to pass the information (which I have) to both channels. The newspapers, and here.

And, promissed, I will translate advertisements in Thai that catch my attention.

Limbo.

Again, I don't share this analyse.

You know that I am someone who likes to "make things happen" - and I do in some cases - especially when they seem impossible to achieve in CR.

My opinion is that it is totaly feasable to have "a source of information" as long as you have enough people with enthousiasm behind it, and a team which also "likes to make things happen".

But, it also represents some consistent work that very few people are ready to do, apart from the ones who can make money with it (and very little money, by the way), like the existing magazines and newspapers.

You speak about a very limited newsletter, it is a good idea. I would love to receive a CR newsletter, even if it was only one page.

But it could also be a Chiangrai page in other magazines or newspapers.

Or, it could also be an online version only, with nice design and pictures (which lacks here).

But it takes more than one (or two) persons to evolve from "we want it" to a "Let's do it"...

What about a "Nothern Provinces" newsletter?

There are a few of us in adjoining provinces, as well, it's not all C.M or C.R.

Anyway, this forum is good enough for me (but like to see more regional events), and of course one can add photos...

Event: Songkran 2005

Ohh, sorry, this event has passed already. :D

But it could be:

Event: Chopping firewood at zzap's= next weekend, volunteers welcome! :D

Hey why do pics appear twice? There's a bug in the software! :o

Hey you guys.....you are off topic....this topic is supposed to be a place to announce what things are happening in CHiang Rai....if you want to discuss the pros and cons of doing something else why don't you go start your own topic and stop trying to hijack this one. Limbo...why don't you start a new topic and move all of this off topic stuff over to that one?...and leave this one for people to inform everyone about what is happening in CR?

Agreed Chownah.

This posting or a similar one could be pinned to the top of the page and any events in Chiang Rai or surrounding area could be added to it.

What about it Limbo?

Slightly offtopic, perhaps.

I just made a positive (I think) suggestion, which is within the spirit of preliminary discussion, which appears to be what is happening here.

But you're right in a way, a (pinned?) topic just to list whatever is happening in the area is a good idea! :o

Well, it took me 20 minutes to compose and correct my previous post, and it still isn't right.

I won't post pics again.

The pic at the bottom belongs further up of course.

Hi zzap.

I know the feeling about the photographs.I have spent hours and still cant get the hang of it.

Dont give up,keep practising, try posting some on the pinned area for photos at the top of the page.

I have made many errors, so you cant be any worse.

Even small donations are always welcome at the temple of Rong Khun!

Donating coins is the fun part of making merit. You must be able to aim.

If you miss, you give it another try. And when your one-Baht coins are finished, ok, you take the five-Baht coins.

Contrary to feeding a one-arm-bandit slotmachine here you always win, even if the reward is postponed for a while.

A very nice example you can find in Ban Sobrak (Golden Triangle) as well.

There you have to throw your coins in a stainless steel construction and your coin will roll through a long pipe into the belly button of a big smiling and big bellied Chinese style munk.

Edit: My first try, some while ago, in the photo-topic resulted in only the text of the caption. Now again: I tried. I browsed, I attached. After ten minutes the picture showed up, framed by the 'paint-program'. Don't ask me why.

Is there anybody who in extremely simple wording could explain to us how we have to ad photo's?

Digitally seen many of us are toddlers, so don't make it difficult please.

Dear Flupke, I see a task for you here! And Tayto: You managed before! You even managed (like zapp) to get the same picture twice in your posting.

And now I will put all my technical skills on the balance to make this pinned topic you talked about. And change the name of the title of this topic a little bit.

Wow, first a cup of coffee. This ain't peanuts!

Limbo, doing his best.

Well, I had to click on the textline to download and look at rong khun.bmp

and it took a few minutes on my inedaquate connection.

Smaller size jpeg files seem to work better for attachments.

My problem before seems to have been that I choose to "add into post" , which made the pics appear twice.

There seems to be two different ways of posting photos,

1. by using the browse button below+Add this attachment and then a button will appear ''add into post'' which you do.

This is farly straightworward but you have to have the photo in your own computor photos.

2. By getting the photos URL, dragging and adding it into IMG above.

This is difficult and lots of times it doesn't work.

So any experts please help

us .

A village 'carnival' (june 2, 2005)

PS: Best part of an hour and only one edit! Works like a flash...

Bye,bye, pics. :o
