I think the "Lost Leader' is too well know to kneed explaining.

Perhaps Gypsy should not have used this method, but as I have said he will not allow folk to take advantage of him.

A strong Personality.

Must be some teachers on this thread.

I ate at Rose Guesthouse a few years ago. Things may have changed dehwah, his personality probably hasn't. The first time I ate there he was drunk and very abusive to his staff. Mai chop! I don't like to see this anywhere. I didn't know the ins and outs of it but he really did seem to going over the top and in public. The food was ok (gin dai mai chai aroi mak mak) so I thought I would give him another chance.

On my second visit the restaurant was empty except for my son and I and two tourist girls. The tourist girls were drinking coffee and chatting. Gipsy told them they had been there too long and had to leave. The girls said they had bought coffee and besides the restaurant was empty and they would be promoting business. With this he physically pushed them both out of the restaurant. Quite an effort for a short over weight germanic man in bad health. From then on I've voted with my tao and never been back.

Friends of mine who have been to his more recent establishments have told me of similar experiences. I won't be giving details as I wasn't there personally.

The food was imho average and not worth the bad experiences I've had. This in my experience and my opinion of the food and the proprietor.

I ate at his Mae Joe place dozens of times and always found him to be very polite, a good host to all the diners and never drunk. Food was good too.

But have to agree that if I saw him drunk and/or behaving unreasonably or impolitely, I would not go back.

I wouldn't take posts by Expatmakmak too seriously. I can't claim to have read each and everyone of his posts, but I don't think I have ever seen one that wasn't meant to get some sort of rise out of people. Adding all the little transliterated Thai words into his posts is kind of an endearing style, though.

Another post removed commenting on moderation with comments regarding 'promoting'. The OP of this topic has been a member for more than 4.5 years and in good standing. If he was the owner of the establishment

than it would be an issue. As it is, he's is simply bringing to members attention a comeback restaurant. Continuing down this accusatory path will have consequences.

//edit - well one member now on holiday for continuing that path.

Gypsy is a great guy whom i have had the pleasure of knowing for 10 years or more. He has always produced good food and is worthy of everyone's patronage. Given the wording of the thread though, as Tywais

perceptively points out, it is obvious that Gypsy is not promoting himself, but it it is a fan of his food. Gypsy's English, whilst perfectly serviceable, isn't up to the standard of the text in the thread. Good luck Gypsy in your new venture.

BTW unless anyone knows better, 'Gypsy' got his name as he has had more restaurants in more locations than any other Farang in Chiang Mai. Anyone remember The Grill Station opposite the Porn Ping hotel?

I just had lunch at Gypsy's.

Even with the limited menu, I had a problem choosing. Ended up having a cheeseburger with fried potatos, which was brilliant. Perhaps the best I've had in CM. The owner asked us how we like our beef, and the result was a perfect medium, just as ordered.

Nobody was drunk, everyone was charming, and I even spoke a little German. Will go again.

So where are all his restaurants now?

The ones I remember before the Grill Station were the Formula 1, very close to where O'Malley's is now; one opposite the Boat on Huay Kaew Road (can't remember the name) and one before them that I think was on Charoen Prathet, somewhere around the Night Bazaar area anyway.

I stayed in a German professional wrestler's hotel in Udon a couple of times. Interesting guy, his trademark was to look like Hulk Hogan. He knew Gypsy back in Germany where the wrestler also owned discos. Apparently Gypsy had some kind of BMW VIP limo service. It seems the nickname preceded him coming to Thailand.

how is it with all that talk of tight fisting and free loading that actual prices

at the restaurant are not mentioned by any of the well wishers?

The well wishers are not the ones talking about tight fisting and free loading, are they?

Nice guy, I remember him well and wish him good luck with his new venture, though I hope he has more luck finding corned beef than I am having, have not seen any anywhere for months now

Try Western Wholesale Meat Company in Pattaya (They ship country wide)

He had a stroke about a month ago and the restaurant has been closed since. Doesn't look like he will be opening any more restaurants now. wai.gif

Thats too bad about the stroke I liked his cornbeef hash for breakfast home made not out of the can. But couldn't do a over easy egg to save his ass.

Nam Pla my mistake, Nam Pow, a bottle of water was what I should have said.

As someone who was in Germany for 12 years I say I know decent German Gasttat food and Gypsy does well with his menu.

I know he will not put up with folk he considers taking advantage of him but physically moving two young women seems a bit off.

He stopped doing his Sunday evening B-B-Q when Frang School teachers took advantage of his cheap price and just ordered a bottle of water.

He needed to make up on booze to compensate for the low food price.

I am looking forward to his expanded menu and will certainly give my custom.

I know many people in a similar position to myself ..... unable to consume alcoholic drinks due to a medical condition.

A restaurant should be selling food, if it makes it's money from alcohol, it's a bar.

Shame about the illness, always a concern for us expats.

Hoping he recovers as much as possible.

Would seem that if someone was not of the " Tight Fist Brigade" there would be many other liquids other than water......fruit juices, soft drinks, coffee, tea, shakes, and so on.... Perhaps they only consumed water on personal religious grounds.rolleyes.gif

Where is Kevin when you need him..... need to know the pros and cons of charging for or giving free water....whistling.gif

Very few places offer any healthy drinks at all.

Coffee and tea are as harmful to me as alcohol, as is Fanta, coke, etc.

Fruit shakes, OK if no dairy content or condensed milk, Fruit Juice rarely offered.

Then you get the waiters who bring Fanta if you ask for orange juice ....... etc.

Expatmakmak --.

I can assure you that Gipsy's Germanic personality has not changed.

If anything, it appears more intense now, than in past years.
