Jai Dee Posted December 1, 2005 Share Posted December 1, 2005 MEASURES TO CURB TRAFFICKING OF WILD ANIMALS AND PLANTS TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN ASEAN MEETING Following the meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Environment and Natural Resources Minister YONGYUT TIYAPAIRAT (ยงยุทธ ติยะไพรัช) said that the next round of ASEAN meeting will need to come up with measures to protect and curb the trafficking of wild animals and plants. Mr Yongyut said various ministries will meet to implement measures following the of CITES officials’ workshop in the Asean region on October 17th-21st, 2005. The Ministerial Session was conducted in conjunction with the first CITES CoP held in Southeast Asia—the CITES CoP13. According to the ASEAN, the organization said it regards this important international conference as recognition of the work that ASEAN countries have carried out in recent years in promoting the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the ASEAN region. The ASEAN Statement on CITES refers to a diversity of nations and its singular focus on the trade in wild fauna and flora, but because it will provide an essential and solid foundation for further action and commitments in the region - on national, bilateral, sub-regional and regional levels. An ASEAN Regional Action Plan on Trade in wild fauna and flora is also being formulated. Indonesia will spearhead the development of the action plan, which will outline specific and concrete actions and commitments in the coming months. Is the proposed Chiang Mai "endangered species menu" itself endangered before it gets off the ground?
