We have few problems in the Songkran festival it's great to see people enjoying themselves. But you've missed seeing all the people who AREN'T enjoying themselves. Selective perception, how convenient. Funny my Thai teacher friend was here while I opened this, after explaining a bit about what the OP was on about, he just said " He is not Thai why does he want to interfere in what Thais do ", unable to post the reply. Be fantastic if Thais kept Songkran to themselves and didn't force it on the farangs. I could freely drive my bike (which is all I've got to drive) with no fear of being knocked off by a blast of water or having my helmet shield powdered so I couldn't see. I'd love some legislation to the effect that the farangs must be let alone. Ask your Thai friend why farangs who want, and ask, to reject the "blessing" are forced to "accept" anyway; they aren't Thai and yet Thais are "interfering" in farang driving and walking. Or is it inclusive of the normal carnage expected on Thai roads? Re the legislating......your joking......maybe it's time to look out your passport and go home. Equally no one likes the interfering Nanny State tone of your question, you may not believe it but your question represents what a lot of us fear and detest. Undue interference in our lives. So if you are so concerned about your personal safety at Songkran, take the advice given earlier and go on holiday. Just avoid it, and leave the rest of us alone to risk our lives. A redundant question as well. The laws are already in place. It is illegal to ride a motorbike drunk without a helmet. It is illegal to throw things at passing motorcycles. I don't think anyone has died from being sprayed with a hose, though it may be irritating. If the question had been phrased "Should the law be enforced?" "Should laws be suspended during Songkran - All? Selected? Only those that are inconvenient to me?" then the debate may have been more constructive. If you don't like it stay in doors or go away for the week. I did last year. Went and spent the week in Sikhanoukville. Can recommend it for an easy and cheap escape [bus Trat - overnight in Ko Kong - lovely walking/ jogging beach several Kms long] . As luck would have it, the newest ritzy hotel there was having a $30 a night promotion. There's a holiday period certainly -loads of Cambo families head on down to Snookyville for a few days off - but nothing like the Thai madness...I Recommend Sikhanoukville as escape destination #1 Having said that, I'm off to Dalat early April. I stock up for a couple of weeks here in Pattaya and do chores around the house.
