Yes, but the motive in this case was not rape, for obvious reasons. It was merely an analogy of how some groups always blame the victim and not the perp. Those are but two situations. Thailand is already in the doldrums economically and financially. Instead of asking foreigners to report every 90 days to immigration, the Thai police should clean up their act and rid this "garbage" from places which are frequented by tourists, especially Phuket and Pattaya. There are other means to control foreigners if immigration feels they need to. It is to hope that foreigners start staying away from such unsafe places like Thailand is. I for myself feel unsafe when I go cycling upcountry near my new home in the Isaan (due to my diabetics I must go cycling). My wife urges me every day again to stay close by our home, because she knows very well her young compatriots, especially those learning at technical colleges. I've been ripped off, too (by my own mistake, admitted). One of my good foreign friends (City Cars Pattaya) was beaten up for no reason recently by a bunch of burglars, ended up paying huge hospital and dental bills. I have been living here since Christmas 1987 (yes, that's over 25 years), most of the time in Bangkok, then Pattaya and now I live in northern Surin province. The safest place was Bangkok to live. I still have a home in Pattaya, but am busy selling it now. I'm not complaining about Thailand, otherwise I wouldn't continue to live here. Agree with you that what she was doing there is irrelevant, except of course it could very well be she was doing unsavoury/illegal things there. And I have no reason to presume that. Would you advise a preg teeen to walk an alley in a booze driven red light district in Sidney, Moscow, London, Paris, LA, Toronto etc... at 1am? Would you advise it in Bali, Rio, Mo Bay, Costa Brava? Get your heads outta the sand and realise it is not Phuket but the world we live in. My daughter came to visit Thailand a couple of years ago at age 16 and had a safe enriching experience. Spent most of her time away from dad hanging with local (Thai) teens and rastas who always made sure she got home safe by escorting her home. She also aways carried a phone and knew that dad was a speed dial away, as did her friends. 2unique Posted February 23, 2012 Share Posted February 23, 2012 Every person has basic human rights however the sad thing is that anyone person or group can deny us those rights by acts of violence.The same way i research the quality of the tap water is the same way I research the locale - even if i read it safe to stroll around drunk flashing money at the natives while leaving my laptop in the coffee shop, I wouldn't do it - I'm as lazy as the next man but I would not want my missus out walking back to our hotel at 1am - I'd ask her to call for collection, have pre-arranged to meet or like I do in Bangkok call and ask what time you coming home, its late, is the car full and do you have your taser? If there were so many people walking past - why was she targeted, surely not just for approaching them (unless they were on the crystal meth mentioned earlier)? Will it affect Phuket tourism? She made a mistake, that is for certain. but no need to rub it in. The ones here at fault are the alleged ladyboy attackers. Sure she made a mistake but the mistake was not going out alone late at night, her mistake was to go to that shithole called Phuket Exactly, they should rename it Tombstone And they worry about negative publicity and it's a affects on tourism. Pleae...do not lay any blame on the victim. She was relaxed, probably off guard, and was on holidays in what is advertised all over the world as friendly, smiling welcoming Thailand. Where "warmth and hospitality are renowned".When will goverments ever get around to issuing a travel warning for Phuket? Nothing but bad news ever comes out of this failed island.
