How Much Does A Modest House & Land Cost In Ubon

Some posts here have set me thinking about how we prioritise our needs and wants in life. For eg, I would be happy to have a nice house but would a nice house necessarily make me happy?

Some pictures of my neighbours houses:

Compared to their house, mine's a palace and they would gladly live in it. Would it make them more happy? Maybe, maybe not. The point is even with their current residence, they are some of the happiest people I've met. They live in a very friendly community, with hardly any walls (in the second picture, there is a walled property but I've yet to seem the owners mix with any of the other locals) or locked doors. Most evenings, there will be a gathering of the neighbours, eating together and maybe having a tipple or two (yet to meet anyone who drinks more than I do).

Of course there are many that thinks that having a big beautiful house with a swimming pool, large fish pond etc is a pre-requisite to being happy. Good for them. I am extremely grateful to have a roof over my head, food on the table, clothes on my back and a modern toilet for my daily motions. The pillar in my room allows me to play Bollywood movies with my wife :).

Most important of all, I paid for it with my own money, not the bank's and most assuredly, not my wife's.

All I can say is that this has shown up some farangs for what they really are, in spite of their protestations. No wonder that so many of them are so bitter about living here.

Come on, don't accuse us of being bitter because we don't like the look of your house.

Do you like the look of the house? Pillars in the middle of the rooms and all?

So far you have only posted that your wife likes the house, which sort of implies you are not that satisfied either.

So far, you've only posted pictures of the view from your window and not that of your wife, which sort of implies that you prefer that view.

Ridiculous conclusion, isn't it?

I only married my wife for her farm, didn't care about her looks, if she didn't have the farm then I wouldn't have married her, it was a business deal (as most marriages still are in Thailand). She provided me with a farm, I provided her with labour and a small income.

But yes, substantially you are correct, the farm is great.

Are you claiming your wife didn't consider her marriage to you a business deal?

Ask her before posting a reply!

Most Thais consider marriage a business deal between two families, certainly nobody in the village I live married for a more foolish reason. You really are showing your lack of understanding of the way Thailand works.

You're right, I should have married a penniless hooker because I loved her.

Then built her a house on her family land at more than twice it's actual cost.

Then lived there happily ever after (or until she ran me of money, or until I caught her with her 'brother', or until she found a richer sucker)

I'm a farmer, I live on a farm with a slightly rundown traditional Thai house and good farm land.

Still, I'm happy, our children are happy, and I think my wife is happy (but one can never truely know).

right you are! a Farang who builds that kind of house (as shown in the video clip) has indeed "shown for what he really is." however, i have strong doubts that a Farang exists with that kind of "exquisite" taste in colour selection and variety of ceramic tiles.

Think your a little out of order Naam.

We are all different, different way of looking at stuff, different backgrounds and different way at looking at ones life. For instance, you spent ooooooodles of cash buying an old BMW 850, some in the know would have steered clear of it in LOS, but you chose to take one on Choices eh.

Boy I leave here for a day and all hell breaks loose!

To everyone who has contributed to this thread, thank you.

We are all individuals, everybody chooses to build and live as he pleases.

And after all at the end of the day, we all have different budgets, we all have different tastes, expectations.

Let's leave the keeping up with the Jones's here where it belongs, in the suburbs of the western world.

What I wanted was to get an overview, of the price of housing in Ubon.

I know that I need to spend some time there and get a better feel for the place.

And for those who have kindly offered us an insight into their private world, please lets not insult anyone.

I would love to establish some contacts with Ex pats, simply for advice, and a recommendation of good builders is awesome.

i look to have engaged the services of a decent migration Agent, who specialises in Thai citizens, so I have all that ahead of me over the next 10 Mths.

My dream as naive as it seems, is to at some point have a home in Thailand as i already have a nice one here in the 'burbs of Brisbane.

And let me tell you just quietly, You ain't gonna build no house here for 2000000 baht!!!!

So that Ballpark price of a build for 1000000-2000000 baht has left me quietly optimistic.

I have a long journey ahead of me, not the least of which is to facilitate, & maintain a relationship with my My girlfriend/come wife.

I also need to understand Thai and Isaan culture, she describes herself as Isaan not Thai funnily enough.

Spend some time there as well.

If her land turns out to be just a rice paddy, so be it, will try and buy some nice land.

I don't what will happen, life always seems to throw us curve balls, but without hopes & dreams we have nothing.

can't help it Transam. Klingons speak what they think, no matter whether it is politically correct or "a little out of order." and to set the record straight, i was not referring to oodles of cash or money per se. i was referring to what i think is an eyesore.

however, i am also aware that in this respect the latin phrase "de gustibus non est disputandum" applies. the chap who has done up the house might get a fit if he sees the boring interior of our cheap bathrooms which don't even have their walls tiled.

David, I always consider all your advice carefully, as it is usually very good advice. Yes without stereotyping, we have seen many problems here in Australia, with Indigenolus Australians, and also The Moari from New Zealand, who tend to live in extended, almost communal familys, with many squatters, freeloaders and too much alcohol, and not enough productive work time. I don't have to tell anyone about these problems, and yes the last thing i would want is to build a house, lock it up for 6 mths and come back and it's been a party house, or considered extended familys property, yes that is a real issue. That concerns me a great deal. I am thinking of a solution to that. I tend to see things in a western mindset, my house is my house, not family property, a real problem that one.

I also have a problem with good for nothing freeloaders who don't work, and drink too much.

This was exactly the same thought process I went through. My partner and I still live in Bangkok for work reasons. However, I also wanted a holiday home (for now, till I retire). I don't have this thing that a lot of westerners have, about privacy. One way to be part of a local Isaan community is exactly that - be part of it, and living with the extended family comes naturally.

So in effect, I actually built two houses in one. There are some common areas such as living and dining rooms, kitchen etc but then I have one huge room with ensuite where I (will) have my own TV, sofa, snug. My wife purchased an external fire proofed door as the door to our own area and this is tantamount to hanging up a private sign but with more subtlety.

If ever you're interested, let me know, I don't mind showing you around if we're both in the area at the same time.

Mate...Your house looks great. Don't listen to these over opinionated morons. A man's home is his palace. It's like the bike you ride...who cares what others think? Good luck with finishing it off.

Not sure why anyone would build a house for a girlfriend. Would you build a house for a girlfriend in your home country?

A 2,000,000 baht house in Ubon will rent for a maximum of 10,000 baht (probably 6,000 baht) and only if it has 3 air conditioners and hot showers and a place to secure your car. You could rent that house for ten years and only pay 1,200,000 baht in those ten years (200,000 baht less if you paid 100,000 baht yearly upfront).

Even if you're married to her, at least knock her up (DNA test) and create an heir before you take the 3rd world real estate dive.

Remember; she is with you for her and her familys financial stability and your with her because you can't get a hot chick half your age in your home country.

It's a fair trade we all make. Just cover yourself a bit.

If the buying the house in her name thang is a prerequisite for her to agree continuing or advancing your relationship then walk away. You can get 1,250 soapys for two million baht. 900 rounds of golf. Damawho every day for 270 years. 2/3 rds of a 3.5 litre Toyota Camry sold in Thailand or 3 of the same model sold in America.

Cool house. Beautiful entry door. Nice windows. 50,000 baht sofa. How many A/Cs do you have?

I just finished building a house near Yasothon. Original budget (as given by wife) was 500,000 for a simple 3-4 bedroomed, typical Isaan style house. Finished product around 2 million due to lots of additionals (my choice). This is 5-6 bedrooms, separate living and dining, one en-suite, one other toilet and one other bathroom, two patios, small fish pond, single storey, about 3,000 sq ft.

I would suggest to give your gf a budget of 500,000 but prepare to spend 1 million if you need mod-cons like western style bath/toilet, aircon etc. Ultimately, the land is free (I presume) so it's very little money to have a comfortable home.

Happily married. Wife and 3 kids live in Ubon. I have never purchased property in Thailand and have never paid a sin sod. I don't support the inlaws or the siblings.

OP might want to ponder my statements and advice as I am one of the few that has not been burned by the type of person who would accept an offer to buy a house (nevermind the type of gal who would initiate the idea for the transaction).

CDMTDM

Are you suggesting that there is nothing very very wrong with a falang buying a girlfriend a house?

A girlfriend!

my word.....

You are proud of the fact that you don't support 3 kids that live under your roof? Surely you mean you don't give the kids everything they want and don't enable your in-laws and make them dependent on you.
