IMO maha sarakham / roiet would be good venues, central to everyone in isaan then so not too much travel required, almost all of the other locations are on the Thailand/Isaan border (although admittedly at least Khon Kaen has all major highways leading there, although bad luck if you live in ubon lol)

yea that is a weird list of city choices in the poll, all on the fringe of Isaan.

Mahasarakham is just about in the center of Isaan, 3-4 hours from all edges. I live between Maha and Roiet and there is a massive pool complex across the 23 from our house with an Olympic size pool, huge kiddy pool, and picnic areas. Along with lots of beer and whiskey (and 100+ farangs in the area). That pool might be ideal because attendees could stay in Roiet (where there's a decent brothel), Maha (where there's a nice 4-star hotel), or the bungalow motel in our village (at 350 a night).

Oh Roiet also has an airport..

Where is this wonderful pool complex? I have been to the water park in Roi Et, which is great for the kids but the pool is not great for swimming and certainly would not be suitable a party.

I live in a remote rural part of Maha Sarakham and spent a few days last week checking Maha Sarakham out. The so called 4 star hotel has never failed to dissapoint and as far as I could tell there is no farang community worthy of note. Its only redeeming feature is an abundance of beautiful students.

Khon Kaen murders Maha Sarakham on all fronts. A great city for a really good weekend away. Some very good hotels to suit all budgets and a good farang community.

No Way! Party = Drink = Thai's = drunken fighting idiots. I stay away from this type of party. Been to many and all end up with Thais fighting.

What about a vote for "NO!" Because I say no it does not mean I don't want to meet other Thai visa members.

I no longer go to any of the local "parties" in the village I live in (near Phimai), 'cas I was always the only farang; and a couple of years ago the male youth round here (and adjacent villages) started drinking too much and fighting at all these events; even a pen gun incident. My feeling of being a high vis target regarding bragging rights has put me right off.

None of this has put me off meeting other farang, which is an activity I enjoy when I visit "my village", (as my girlfriend describes such locations); i.e. Phuket, Hua Hin and koh Chang.

I'm more comfortable being around drunk farangs than I'll ever be around drunk Thais.

I don't think we have to make it a black tie affair, but I'm with you that the venue should be a bit above barn level, yet affordable.

I'll bring my tux just in case....................whistling.gif

I would prefer an all-casual sarong affair.

Less class distinction, don't ya know.whistling.gif

I believe a familiar distinction would factor into comfortibility, yes?

Long ago, I made a solid commitment to only "drink" with close Thai friends and family menbers.

Quit showing off about your airport. I'm in Mahasarakham just off the 23 with no airport and no train station. If you want to rent a car you need to go to Khon Kaen.

I'm certainly up for it although I will be back in the UK at the beginning of August and not sure for how long. Obviously Sarakham is closest for me but Roiet, Khon Kaen or Kalasin are not too bad. I suppose the problem is a lot of the farangs seem to be around the edge but that makes it a long way if you're from the other side. Khon Kaen would seem to be the best compromise. As for beer I think free is a bad idea as some people just won't stop even if they have to pay so free makes it worse. I don't mind a drink but I'm not interested in getting drunk.

Food is certainly a major issue to look into. Once we've selected the city (with Udon now heading the race), we can start thinking about the place we host the event.

A foodlover myself, I believe we should not go to fancy as Pullman, but some decent farang food should be on the menu.

Another question I omitted was....would you prefer a boys night out? Bring the wife? The kids?

Your input please!

Why not wife and kids? Up to anybody I'd say........wai.gif

Ok boys and girls, the decision has been made, the party is on. Location will be Khon Kaen, time around end of October.

As I am not really familiar with Khon Kaen, any recommendations for a venue? We are looking for something that can host around 100 people, maybe extendible if more are coming. We also need parking space and most preferably a half-decent hotel in walking distance. Maybe a resort hotel would be nice?

If you run a place and you think it suits our needs, feel free to PM me.

.... a deafening silence from the KK gallery. Come on people! You have wangled yourself a party now get with the typical Thai planning and find a place for it. There's more than a few Thai style resorts in the area that would prove adequate IMHO; easy to find (with GPS coords), plenty parking (not a muddy field), plenty COVERED socialising/dining/boozing space (it is rainy season) and at least 20 rooms available for those that plan on staying the night (and those that have staying forced upon them).

Perhaps the question should have been asked - if a TV party were held in your nearest large town would you be prepared to help organise it? If yes, please indicate your home town. If no, watch this space for further details".

Such a gathering as the get together proposed should be something memorable,IE. nice surroundings and atmosphere, good western style food , inhouse accomodation.

Travelling long distances for a knees up in a thatch roof thai style resort where you need to get behind the wheel half pissed in the middle of the night to find your lodgings in a strange city definately does not excite me.

IMHO a subsidised get together in a hotel such as the Pullman in KK would be memorable, it also has Western chefs to cater for the discerning diner.

Maybe Raro could check out a package deal, arrive Sat , get together (pissup) Sat arvo and evening with buffet ,stay the night and leisurely return home Sunday.

Note... the Pullman Xmas packages get rave reviews .

For those that are interested try having a look at the link below, it would be perfect for your requirements and the owner is an ex-pat too.

The place looks great! Does anyone in here have connections to the owners/management?

In fact, we are looking for something that has bit of a nice atmosphere, not too hi-so (and potentially expensive), accommodations on site a definite plus, but a half-decent hotel around the corner would do, too.

Just a few suggestions, Ratchawadee near the airport is a nice place to stay and i am sure could cater for the event but a bit far from town, in the town, Kosa could be okay and has the nice beer garden and has function rooms, Chareon Thani hotel okay too and has Lighthouse bar, which sells good reasonable priced food.

There are lots of thai style bars that could cater, one called Rim Bueng sure thats the right spelling which is a really nice setting and has a great live band, or even Top West early on is rather quiet until the mor-lum music kicks in.

Thanks a lot for that! I have sent mails to all three hotels but could not find any contact details of the other places you mentioned on the internet. Still open to further suggestions, please let them coming either here or by PM, thanks! B)

Big shame about Castle Howchow,it is the perfect place for a get together and has loads of rooms and facilities plus a great host and hostess and the food there is wonderful.

A couple of other hotels in KK is the newly opened Centara and the secret garden of Narakul resort smile.png
