I have to disagree with your comment about Lotus and Big C being busy. Granted I always shop late, so usually not earlier than 8 in the evening, but the south stores are not busy at all.

The only problem that could make them seem slightly busy, is that they only have a few checkouts open. So you might have to queue up behind a shopper or two before you get to the cashier.

It can get crazy from mid morning till the afternoon. I've seen very long lines with many checkouts open. Makro is the same. We don't shop at Big C Extra any more...

That's why I always try to get to these places just after opening time. The crowds seem to come just after the time they are allowed to sell booze (11am) and I am heading away then before traffic starts to get bad.

Jomtien would seem a better bet to me; no real competition, lots of people with plenty of money and fairly poor public transport to Tesco which is the nearest proper supermarket.

I would have thought that most people on the Darskide would have a car, and so could easily get to Tesco or BIgC on Sukumvit.

Darkside is where the customers live. Big population. Intrigues that you would think most people on Darkside would have a car. Why is that?

Why bring a supermarket to them? Central location on Sukhumviit Road is the smarter operation as they get business from both sides. One thing is for sure, you can complain as much as you like about the bad traffic, but you'll always find a way to do your shopping. What's an extra 5 or 10 minutes in your air-conditioned car matter anyway.

Wow...a post that makes sense...and Foodland is basically on Sukhumvit, being what, maybe a couple hundred meters down from it. Agree also that spending a few minutes in my air-con car is no hassle at all...just gives me more time to listen to my podcast downloads smile.png

Unless the super on the Farside was a truly all-in operation, ala Foodland or Villa, I don't think it would do very well. If it were a rinky-dink operation with stale breads, crap dairy/meat selection, and didn't have everything else one finds in the supermarkets around town, I would never patronize it. I usually go into town at least once a day to work-out or have a cuppa with friends so just plan my shopping stops around them. Also, when out late on the town, it's easy to stop at Foodland on the way back to the Farside. It's amazing how many really pretty ladies you can see shopping at Foodland a 1 a.m. smile.png

HA! No wonder I never run into you at Tesco or Big C. No reason to be there before 11am!!! But if we do, gives me a great chance to really stock up!! tongue.png

It's on Tony;s land so it may be his developement.. therefore I wouldn't hold much hope of it being a success, just a total failure like Tony's foodcourt, Tony's Bizarre and Tony's camp site*.

(*Yes you could actually rent a tent in Pattaya for 300 baht a night)

Did they do short time rates as well?

I just drove past Tony's today and saw a sign Short time rooms 230 baht hanging outside his Gym, maybe its for when you need a quick exercise?

When I used to shop at Carrefour Saturday mornings we were always passing Tesco heading home just about 11am so I could nip in and get a case of Chang and be in and out sharpish.

Then when we switched to Makro they don't sell Chang (cans) so now I pick it up in Makro Rayong as it's a few kms from my new office (did a lunchtime run today in fact), or the missus picks up a case in Tesco Ban Chang.

I got used to all this dodging around opening times in Saudi when eveything shut for prayer, 5 times a day.

Very funny. I was in the middle east recently and it was a pain. It's a breeze here compared to there for sure!!

Do you shop at the various local places that sell booze? I see them from time to time, but it's just so easy to get a case when you are at Makro/Tesco/Big C. Not sure how much money you'd actually save.

I used to get booze from the local places when I first came to Pattaya as there were no Tesco/Big C around then, and I remember it didn't seem any cheaper and not worth the hassle of a special run. Much easier to pick it up all under one roof now.

Tony's Shopping Center & Fitness Plaza coming soon. (insert photo of cycle and hammer communist Russian flag)

He'd be better off not using his name. I certainly won't be going anywhere near there if it comes to fruition. His prices will make the other most expensive places in town cheap by comparison.

I think Tony's biggest marketing error is treating all foreigners like they're idiots with too much money in their pockets.

I remember when he started whinging about how much his free towel service was costing him - then he started whinging about the free water - expecting we'd pay premium prices for his bottled water if it wasn't supplied... all the while parking his expensive rides right out the front.

That's exactly right. In reality we should want these businesses to succeed and a full size operation need lots and lots of customers in order to provide us with the very best fresh food. Foodland is head and shoulders ahead of every other supermarket in town. There's no real contest. I travel 5km (each way) from Pratumnak Hill on a motorcycle to shop there and these guys are complaining that Sukhumvit Road is too far for them. I get odds and ends from other places too, but that's my main shop.

Just reminds me - I saw that 3 1/2 legged street dog sneaking into the butcher section of Friendship a few nights ago - disgusting. The service there is 3rd rate with too many sour faced staff. That would be a great spot for a real supermarket, not one that's floating along that deserved to be demolished years ago.

I dont think his are the only businesses in Thailand to be run on those lines.

Maybe not, but he's probably one of the most offensive of them all and he's not shy about it. Remember the old Tony's disco - 180 baht for a coke?

Soon you could probably get a lifetime gym membership with that!

I think the "New Shopping Center", on the corner of 3rd. Road and Pattaya Tai, will be something like "Made In Thailand" on Second Road.

2nd Rd is already an endless sea of stalls selling the same socks, luggage and tacky tshirts. No more, for pity's sake.

Tropo, as I noted in my initial suggestion for a supermarket on the Darkside, the distance should be at least 3 kms east of Suk. Most of the falangs over here live further from Foodland than you do, and, believe me, the traffic from 3+ kms east of Suk to Foodland is at least as bad as what you face, if you use 3rd Road, rather than 2nd, to get to Pattaya Klang.

I totally agree with you regarding the fresh meat, fish, and veggie quality at Foodland vs the other supermarkets. My only complaints about Foodland are that the ailes are too small, and that their variety of items, and choice of brands is too small. But both are the result of their size limitations, rather than of poor management. They are a bit more expensive for many things than Big C or Lotus; but less, in most cases, than Villa. The veggies, deli counter, and cheeses are my primary targets in Foodland. We use the supermarkets for most pre-packaged foods, as well as paper products and other household stuff. So I still want a supermarket over here. :-)

Just what Pattaya needs, another major road intersection clogged up with traffic.

Yep, and there will be another one on the old exite lot =))

Apparently Montien will vacate its current premises. In its place will be a MBK style mall. I hope not, as Beach Rd traffic will be even worse!

That rumor has been going around for years. (Almost as long as the casinos in Pattaya stories.) I'll believe it when I see it. Edited by Jingthing

I read that the Montien was going to be redeveloped as a hotel+condo in the Waterfront style. Apparently the lease is up next year.

You could be right, but I was told last year that MBK is keen to open there. Who knows?!?! But I hope you are right as I think a replacement hotel there will be less of a traffic nightmare.

Montien has already commenced building in Naklua Soi12, next to the Sanctuary of Truth.

Yup, that's wise...in this town seeing is believing, except when it comes to some "ladies". tongue.png

Montien has been bought by the same group that owns MBK,doesn't mean there will be build a shopping center in the style of MBK.

Another shopping centre would be great. There's no problem getting around on a bike. Help everyone out and leave you car at home.

MBK mulls hotel-condo development in Pattaya

Group to focus on financial business as rice trade declines

MBK Group said yesterday that it was considering the development of a mixed-used property project worth Bt5 billion to Bt6 billion on an 18-rai (nearly 3 hectares) plot it owns in Pattaya.

The Montien Hotel currently occupies the spot. Its lease with MBK expires next January.

Surely the final plan is not to have it lined from one end to the other with "pie in the sky" Condos or shop houses?

Or is it? There cannot be many more ex Soviet Block people left who can or even want to buy a 34 sq Mtr room here.

There are acres of land for an opportunistic, wealthy Thai to build all manner of things necessary for modern life.

Supermarket (Tesco / Big C size), Private School, Petrol stations, Hospital, modern Re-cycling plant and incinerator to produce electricity for increased demand (imagine if they burnt all the crap how clean the place would be).

The property developers seem to think that there is still a lot of steam left in the Russian condo-buying machine. We shall see.

Either way, as you say there is no shortage of space in Jomtien for a decent supermarket; the Ocean1 site would seem an obvious contender, or the plot by Chateau Dale which as far as I know was earmarked for a commercial centre years ago. Not to mention the umpteen empty hectares opposite on the Jomtien side of Pattaya Park.

They seem to have started to build something on the plot next to Chateau Dale/Royal Hill. Anyone know what it will be ?

The land has been sold to the developers of Atlantis. Hundred's of 35 sqm condos will go on sale very soon.

I'm glad I didnt buy that condo I looked at in Chateau Dale. Only the empty plot next door (and the silly price) put me off.

I'm amazed that so many foreigners will come over here and live in 35m2 condos.
