Tah Chat Chai police were notified of the discovery in Sakoo Village 1 at about 11am. Arriving at the scene with Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation workers, Lt Col Prakob Boonkwan and fellow officers found that lifeguards had covered the body with a pha khao maa (Thai loincloth) and large pieces of plastic, all held down against the whipping monsoon winds by lengths of bamboo and chunks of concrete. Underneath the coverings, police found the body of a man lying face up, dressed only in a pair of black briefs. The man appeared to have suffered a large puncture wound to the back of the skull. His nose and an ear were missing. Col Prakob estimated the man was about 33 to 40 years old. “From our initial inspection, he was likely attacked with a sharp metal object,” said the policeman, who quickly dismissed the possibility that parts of the man’s face might have been eaten by aquatic animals. He estimated the time of death at about 6am, the same day. “We questioned local residents, but none were able to identify him. The body was taken to Thalang Hospital for further examination,” said Col Prakob. A rescue worker at the scene said he thought the body appeared to be that of an Asian, probably Thai, though possibly Burmese, he said. Lite Beer
Phuket police confirm identity of mutilated man Phuket Gazette – Phuket Kusoldharm workers at Nai Yang Beach prepare to transport the corpse to Thalang Hospital. Photo: Thawit Bilabdullar PHUKET: Phuket Police have identified the mutilated body that washed ashore at Nai Yang Beach yesterday. Tah Chat Chai Police identified the man as 36-year-old Santi Chandaeng, originally from Udon Thani but most recently living in Phuket’s Thalang District. The man’s wife, Roongruthai Phaha, 35, told police that her husband was last seen departing for a fishing trip on Saturday. He often went squid fishing on rocks in the area where his body was found, she said. “She [Mrs Roongruthai] said he usually stays overnight and comes home in the morning,” Lt Col Prakob Boonkwan confirmed to the Phuket Gazette. “The fishing area he goes to is difficult to access. You have to park your vehicle at a deserted hotel, then walk about two kilometers to get to the area he usually went to,” Lt Col Prakob explained. An initial investigation by police revealed that Mr Sanit had not been drinking or in an argument before his death. However, police are continuing their investigation to determine whether or not Mr Sanit’s demise was a case of accidental death or murder. “He could have been struck by a large wave. With this kind of weather it is possible to get swept away by the waves,” Lt Col Prakob added.
