Suspects deny 'execution' of Phuket woman

Phuket Gazette

It's been mentioned elsewhere in the PG by a poster that there's a slim chance that they may have the wrong suspects and that there's probably more than a few guys driving around Phuket in in silver / bronze Toyota pick-ups with a gun under seat and a bag of ya bah. I too hope they have the right ones

There's a possibility they could walk. Having no autopsy facility here to determine the cause of death and no ballistic forensics to test if the slug and gun match are two possible reasons. A few baht to zip some lips and a hefty fee to a good ( pun intended ) lawyer could do it.

However it is as always, left to us the reader, to make our own decisions on the facts, given so many different and sometimes conflicting reports from many different sources exist. Only those that possibly know the full facts are the victim, since deceased, and the perpetrators of the crime itself. The rest at the moment is pure speculation and as usual results possibly will never be published.

PHUKET: -- Two of the three men arrested for the shooting execution of Sumittra Namfak in Phuket on Saturday have confessed to taking part in the murder.

The third suspect continues to proclaim his innocence.

Police today had the suspects stage a re-enactment of the crime at the victim’s house in Thung Thong.

The house was empty during the re-enactment as family members were attending Ms Sumittra’s funeral.

Thung Thong Police Deputy Superintendent Borriboon Yusuksomboon told the Phuket Gazette that the gunman, Savit Jongruk, 28, from Loei province, and the driver, Aroon Patan, 27, from Krabi, had both confessed to their involvement in the fatal shooting.

“Sanguan Phu-ngern, a 26-year-old from Krabi, claims he was not involved [in the murder] and that he was only travelling with the other two,” said Col Borriboon.

During the re-enactment, Mr Savit explained that he entered the house via the front door, which was open, and saw Ms Sumittra lying on the couch watching TV.

“I shot her in the head and ran back to the truck where my friends were waiting for me,” said Mr Savit.

A second person was sitting on the floor next to Ms Sumittra when she was shot, he said, but he gave no description of who that person was.

“The suspects claim that they were hired but at this stage of the investigation we can’t divulge the identity of that person,” Col Borriboon said.

“We have yet to transfer the case to the provincial prosecutor as we need more time to conclude our investigation,” he added.

It's hard to see why the "foreign 'boyfriend'" bit has any business in an article about the vicious murder of a local seamstress.

It wouldn't be the first time that a "foreign boyfriend" killed ... or had killed ... his Thai girlfriend.

And it wont be the last.!

PHUKET: -- Police yesterday arrested a brother and sister who they believe orchestrated the execution of Sumittra Namfak, 55, in Phuket on Saturday.

Ms Sumittra was shot at close range in the back of the head while watching television in her home in Thung Thong.

Winaporn Rathakarn, 46, was arrested in Pa Khlok, Thalang, near the Heroines’ Monument.

Her brother Sirawat Rathakarn, 44, was arrested in Koh Yao District in Phang Nga.

An officer at Thung Thong Police Station told the Phuket Gazette that the siblings are originally from Klong Thom in Krabi.

“The woman has confessed to paying 100,000 baht for the contract killing. She gave the money to Sirawat and another man, a Thai man, who we are still searching for.

“This other man is suspected of teaming up with Sirawat to hire the killers,” the officer said.

The gunman, Savit Jongruk, 28, from Loei province, was to be paid 20,000 baht to pull the trigger, while the other 80,000 baht was to be shared among the whole gang.

The gang received 40,000 baht in advance, with Savit receiving 12,000 baht in advance. The rest was to be paid after the hit was complete.

Police are trying to contact a 62-year-old British man who had been romantically involved with Ms Sumittra for two years, a relationship brutally cut short by her murder on Saturday.

“This man met Winaporn first and was in a relationship with her for four years before he met Ms Sumittra,” explained the officer.

“He was very much in love with Ms Sumittra. He apparently gave her lots of money. We have been told the amount is in the millions of baht. This apparently made Ms Winaporn very angry.

“We have emailed the British man and are awaiting his reply,” he said.

Phuket Police are expected to hold a press conference today to release more details about the crime.

Her ex-husband, ex-boyfriend, family member, was probably pissed off that she has a foreign boyfriend and so hired three guys in a pickup to shoot her. Same as in any country, some people can't deal with rejection and resort to murder. Sad no matter where it happens.
