When they first opened near Chang Puek Gate they were (somewhat) amazing. That was back when there were very few restaurants in Chiang Mai serving decent Western food. We can make better sandwiches here. I've never tried Subway in Thailand and don't plan to but the other place is nothing amazing. I agree with UG. If I want to go out for a sandwich which I might once or twice a year, I would go to Dukes or Butter is Better. Popular Post junglechef Posted July 16, 2012 Popular Post Share Posted July 16, 2012 A real good sandwich or even an amazing one is an art to make, the layering of flavors in the correct sequence (put the mustard on the bottom piece of bread next to the meat not next to the veg on top, for instance) cutting the meat in the correct thickness thin enough so one can bite it but not too thin so you don't enjoy the texture, the very important building to get each ingredients in every bite, the right bread for the kind of sandwich (whole wheat on PB&J would not do), not making it too thick so hard to bite or too thin that the bread overwhelms the fillings and on and on. The Rueben as mentioned above uses the melted cheese to keep the moisture from the dressing inside so the crusty bread does not get soggy. As most do it yourself dining experiences (ever look at the table next to you at Korean BBQ joints and wonder how all that meat will cook at the same time) people think it's everything is easy and then blame the restaurant when the food is not as good as they have had somewhere else where someone who knows what they are doing crafted their lunch. But for my fix I go to Subway, mainly for the emotional connection to eat there back at home because I don't have all the fixings to make a sandwich at home (who has ham, roast beef, turkey), but I do keep a can of tuna for emergencies next to the ramen noodles, but well past the expiration date. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When I make a sandwich at home it never tastes as good as a good sandwich shop. One reason is that I am too lazy to purchase and prepare a lot of ingredients myself, so tend to simplify the sandwich. The other negative is that I do not want to eat sandwiches very often, so am stuck with a bunch of bread, meat and cheese that I have to use up quickly when I do not really want it. For me, buying one sandwich from a good shop is preferable to making them at home unless it is just ham and cheese or something really simple. Doubtless it's true that sndwiches are no longer amazing to find in CM. But OK is OK, and breakfasts are in the mix - I too prefer them when I'm in the mood. If you were traveling across the United States in rural areas, you'd be glad to find it, if you liked such food. Indeed, comparing sandwiches in CM is about as worthwhile as comparing fish and chips. But as suggested by junglechef, sandwiches have more promise and can delight in the higher realms of deliciousity (if not here or at Subway). I usually pick bread up from The Irish Pub, Rimping, TOPS and Kasem. Sometimes other places depending on where I am when I realise I need bread.
