Nice.... For a botte of red wine costing 500 baths We will now pay 620... 140 % increase !

Do they realise that this is a commercial suicide ?

How do you work that out?

Really? It's a 24% increase. The difference of 120 between the two prices is 24% higher than the starting price. If it was increased by 140%, you would be paying 500+700 (140% of 500). 1,200 for a bottle of wine?

RT @RichardBarrow: Tax increase for cigarettes of 6-8 Baht starts tomorrow. 7-11 will only sell 2 packs to each customer tonight to stop hoarding.

WRONG (again) Richard--I just bought 12 cartons--120 packs-- of Marlboros at the local 7-11.

Those are for my customers because I don't smoke...

So how will it increase revenue if less is sold at a higher price?

And, a bottle of beer (660ml) is to increase by around 100 baht?

Other than in backward societies were there is no universal healthcare, the system ends up with sky high costs for everything from liver disease to cancer. Best is therefore to have no turnover at all. Cigarette prices should go to the roof and for alcohol the increases are still very modest given the fact that 1 liter of alcohol does not equal one liter of beer.

oh only 'backwards" societies dont have universal healthcare- i think u mean 'broke' societies or socialist societies - tax and spend- leftists are very generous with other peoples money...

Excellent, the price of alcohol can't be high enough. It's one of the most dangerous drugs in the world, it causes death and mayhem in traffic, spousal abuse and all sorts of aggression. In another thread: "Drunken Swede kills tourist from New Zealand". I am convinced he would not have killed that guy if he were sober!

Who kill most people drunks or sober people?

The alcohol excise tax on rice whiskey was increased from 120 baht a litre to 150 baht a litre based on alcohol content, and for blended liquor from 300 baht to 350 baht per litre. The tax on brandy increased to a maximum of 50 per cent from the existing rate of 48 per cent.

The new rate does not apply to beer or wine, which already face maximum taxes.

so no price hike on beer ? the bars in town will be upset ! i bet they already planned to increase prices by 10bt as a 6bt rise would of been an odd number

Addicts are expected to keep buying. Families will suffer. Rich get richer. Same everywhere. Also crime will go up.

I guess you're just trolling, but I'll bite anyway: Only 20% of the fatal road accidents are caused by drunken drivers, so drunk drivers drive safer than sober drivers....

I tried to google the current tax system. A <deleted>' jungle out there, they ought to straighten the whole system out while they're at it. I also wonder how ASEAN will affect this, since it may be possible to order wine through internet from other countries. The same battle has been fought in the nordic countries & EU and the tax heavy countries are losing.

you should check out the people who die waiting for free treatment in the fairytale land of universal healthcare- universal healthcare means everyone can have access to poor quality service- its a joke fantasy land and lazy loosers promote it so they can have other people be responsible for their health instead of taking responsibility for themselves- - infant mortality rates and life expectancy are lower in poor countries who cannot afford sub par healthcare for everyone- go to a hospital in the USA its full of rich people from countries with the myth of universal healthcare who would rather live and pay than die and get it for free

Only if more than 20% of people are driving drunk out there provided your 20% figure is accurate anyway.

"80 degrees" means 40%, so any alcoholic drink under 40% alcohol content is going to increase by 120 B/liter. On a 660 mL bottle of domestic beer, that's 79.2 baht per bottle. So if you're paying, say 50 baht per bottle now, you'll be paying 129 baht per bottle when this goes into effect.

And we know that there are many bottles of imported alcohol that are already more than 400 baht per liter, so this is clearly a raise "by" 400 baht on imported alcohol, not "to" 400 baht.

Maybe it'll be a good thing, as I think some of my fellow contributors on this site have burned a few too many brain cells for any serious critical thinking, LOL. Just taking the piss, guys. Keep on chugging.

this argument is non nonsensical if 50% of all people on average on the road were drunk than this compairison would make sense as it stands ... not so much- the point of the posters argument is that a higher percent of drunken drivers kill people than do sober

Only pissing yourself, already confirmed on a very english Thai newspaper that it's based on percentage of alcohol...meaning an average 5-10 baht increase for most local drinks

Not so.

Alcool will kill some people wo get highly alcoolic, from cirrhosis of the liver.

And drunk people who drive vehicles kill many people, not the alcool itself.

Cigarettes kill more people, and fortunately mostly the smokers themselves.

.

That other unmentionable newspaper is reporting that the increase will raise the price of a bottle of lao khao whiskey by about 10 baht and price of cigarettes could increase by six to nine baht per pack.

Google the phrase "Alcohol, tobacco taxes up" for a much more informative explanation of the new tax.
