AOT stepping up security at Hat Yai Airport

BANGKOK, 25 August 2012 (NNT) – The Airports of Thailand (AOT) has stepped up its security measures at the Hat Yai Airport, following continued violent incidents in the southern border region.

AOT President, Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulabutra, said that, in a move to prevent any act of terror and to assure the public of their safety following a series of violent attacks in the southern border provinces, the AOT has increased its security measures at the Hat Yai Airport.

In doing so, thorough inspection of people coming in and leaving the airport, along with more CCTV installations as well as bomb squads have been implemented both inside the terminal and in the parking area of the airport.

The stepped-up measures have been introduced under the collaboration of the air force personnel, the army, the police and related agencies.

Mr. Anirut is confident that the new measures will help make the airport’s service more efficient and ready it to become Thailand’s southern trade hub.

According to the AOT President, during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, the Hat Yai Airport has seen 12,136 flights landed and departed, or 6.59 percent higher than the same time of last year.

At the same time, more than 1.6 million passengers have flown through the Hat Yai Airport, or 9.67 percent higher than last year.

Mr. Anirut expects the passenger traffic at the Hat Yai Airport for the whole 2012 fiscal year, which ends on September 30th, at 1.97 million or a 5.5-percent increase from the last fiscal year.
