Sukhothai municipality under water again

SUKHOTHAI, Sept 16 - The Sukhothai municipality has been working around the clock to plug holes in the city's floodwall after water seepage from Yom River covered the municipality again early Sunday just two days after floodwaters receded.

Provincial workers are attempting to plug the holes and pump water out of the area.

Deputy Mayor Nopporn Pu-a-roon said the authorities remain on alert as the water level in Yom River continues rising at a rate of 10 centimetres per hour.

In addition, water from Srisachanalai district flooded many homes and agricultural areas in parts of the provincial seat.

Additional sandbag embankments are being built to prevent water overflowing riverbanks.

The Phitsanulok irrigation chief has urged residents in three districts--Prompiram, Bangrakam and provincial seat bordering Sukhothai's Kongkrailat district-- to brace for rising water level in the Yom River.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reportedly assigned her deputy Yongyuth Wichaidit, concurrently interior minister and Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi who chairs the government's Water and Flood Management Commission to respond to the flood and help residents to cope with the deluge from the North. One in three nationwide worried by flooding: Suan Dusit Survey

BANGKOK, Sept - More than one-third of respondents -- 36 per cent -- are worried by the current floods in many provinces following unending rain while 37 per cent are uncertain about the government's measures adequacy in coping with the floods, according to a survey released Sunday.

Conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University from Wednesday through yesterday (Sept 12-15) among 1,422 respondents nationwide, 40 per cent of those polled believe the government's flood prevention would be inadequate to control the situation as water volume from the North as well as heavy downpours in many areas caused floods making drainage difficult.

One in three -- some 35 per cent -- however are unperturbed, believing that last year's flood crisis was a major lesson and that the government has learned to cope with this year's threatened inundation.

Among those polled, nearly one-third -- 32.5 per cent -- hope that this year's flooding will be less severe than last year's flood. Fifteen per cent believe the government will have better preventive measures after fighting last year's mega floods.

Slightly more than 41 per cent urged the government to do everything possible to prevent flooding, update flood alerts and warning residents in a timely manner, accurately as well as assigning concerned agencies in each area to monitor the situation. (MCOT online news)

Deputy Public Health Minister warns of spread of dengue fever

BANGKOK, 16 September 2012 (NNT) - Dr. Surawit Khonsomboon, Deputy Minister of Public Health, has warned of the spread of dengue fever as Thailand is in the middle of the rainy season which is the prime breeding time for mosquitoes carrying the disease.

Dr. Surawit said that dengue fever is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. People are thus advised to take preventive measures by getting rid of mosquito larvae, using equipment available in their households such as detergent and dishwashing liquid.

The World Health Organization has given out a warning that approximately 500,000 people around the world are afflicted to dengue fever each year with 22,000 losing their lives.

Dr. Surawit suggested that the best way to prevent the risk of contracting the disease is to avoid mosquito bites and to eradicate mosquito larvae. The government has provided the spraying of disinfectants, smoke, and other chemicals, to eradicate adult mosquitoes. The Department of Medical Sciences has also developed a new method of eliminating mosquito larvae by adding one tablespoon of washing powder to a container with approximately 2 liters of water. This mixture should also be added to potted plant trays, trays beneath cabinets, tires, or plastic bowls.

Shampoo, dishwashing liquid, or liquid soap can be used in substitution. One tablespoon of any of those liquids can be added to one liter of water and slowly stirred to create bubbles before being sprayed via spray bottles into places where mosquitoes are sighted.

SUKHOTHAI, Sept 16 – The rising Yom River spilled over its banks in Sawankhalok district, inundating the historic riverside community as deep as two metres.

Sawankalok mayor Somchart Limprapat warned municipality residents to move their belongings to higher ground as the massive waterflow moves in from Si Satchanalai district.

The Yom River is rising quickly to a critical level as high as 10.42 metres in Sawankhalok district.

The municipality raised its sand embankment by another metre along the river bank to protect the business district.

Four low-lying subdistricts are under two metres of water.

Local residents moved to stay on the Sawankhalok-Sukhothai Road. A bridge across the Yom River and a riverside road are now impassable due to the high flood, but main roads can still be used normally. (MCOT online news)

Flooding hits Sukhothai heart

Flooding raged into the heart of Sukhothai Sunday, just a few days after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra visited the province and announced that the situation there would soon return to normal.

Despite allout efforts, floodwater level already soared to about 50 centimetres in the economic zones of the province.

Relevant officials, as of press time, were still struggling to fill holes and leaking spots of embankment along the Yom River. They initially thought that their giant sandbags plus gabions would be able to block the water from seeping into town and causing inundation.
