shafty
news report is not correct! the truth is a maynmar man bit a chunk from HER lip (the victum), she wasin hospital in the morrning and due to fly out that evening, she is now back her country. Firslyt police in koh phangan want to keep it secret but a I know one of the people that has spoken with the lady , the man, and the police there, he called news from bkk and they followed it up which means the police have no choice but to do thier job and find the man. That means she could see that it was a Burmese and it is impossible that he's from any other Asian origin?
Tchooptip
All of you farang should realize that rape still makes national headlines here in Thailand. In your countries rape doesn't even make the local news because it is so common. everyone comes on here showing their hatred of Thailand and demands that it starts emulating the oppressive regimes you lot come from. Please get out of Thailand if you don't like it. Move back to the UK or USA where you can't even smoke a cigarette without being monitored by the police, and god help you if you step out of the smoking zone. Rape is not a common crime in Thailand, nor is assault, it happens the same as everywhere in the world but Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world. Well said Andy --- you have to remember however that most TV members are grumpy old besterds who would find something to moan about in Paradise - wait a minute; that's exactly what they are doing! Very funny formulation

Hmmmmm, try taking off the rose coloured glasses! Have you forgotten that there was/ is a scam in Bkk where people that may or may not be police stop farangs and accuse them of dropping a cigarette butt, then demand 2,000 baht or go to jail? Rape is certainly NOT uncommon among Thai people, or does it only count when it involves a tourist, and Thailand is certainly not the safest country in the world, even if you discount all the traffic accidents. However, I agree that if one doesn't like Thailand, no one is blocking the exit door. As for the victim, this is not a PC country, which should not be forgotten by young women getting drunk/ drugged out of their heads. There is no substitute for common sense, which seems sadly lacking among the gap year generation of today. For those that say there were lots of people around, from what I see on U tube etc, had they seen the woman being attacked, IMO, far from "rescuing" her, they'd have been VDOing the proceedings to post it on line! thaibeachlovers
..." BEING A TRASH COLLECTOR......".......( LETS RESPECT THE FORUM , FRIENDS...AH !...) I LIVE IN HAADRIN LONG ENOUGH, TO BE A WITNESS OF ALL THE EGOS STROKE AROUND, AND SADLY WATCH WOUMEN ( AND MEN ) WALKING , TO DONT SAY MORE...AROUND NAKED ! YES, I SEE TOPLESS SHOUTING WOUMAN WALKING ON THE STREET !!!.....HERE , IS THAILAND....DIFFERENT CULTURE, IF YOU ( BEHAVING ON THIS WAY ) DID NOT NOTICE YET !!!!!!! ...OR READ YOUR LONELY PLANET BOOK ! IT IS VERY TRUE ( IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY EXCUSE TO RAPED PEOPLE ) BUT...I SEE EVERYTIME !!! WHEN YOU RESPECT YOU GET RESPECT..... GRATEFULL FOR LIVING IN PARADISE...AS GRATEFUL FOR ALL THAT CLEAN THE BEACH, EVERYSINGLE DAY ( THAT " TRASH COLLECTORS " )...THEY DO, you are absolutely right here. Most tourists doesnt read any informations anymore before going to places like Thailand. It is a shame how they are running around in Temples sometimes....in Bikinis, miniskirts or just in beachwear... Also at the beaches topless white women, even when they must see how Thais going into the water, fully dressed with two or three shirts....One must not like, but RESPECT it... so if you are going to another country with different culture, behave like them or be aware it could be danger... I know the so called Full moon parties... drugs-alcohol-and bam bam everywhere.. OK, burkas should be compulsory beach dress for farang women tourists in future, LOL. Do you really think that because Thai girls that grew up in the village wear a t shirt when swimming, everyone should? It's like saying that Thai woman always cover their shoulders, when that's so patently absurd. Thai fashion has moved on from the "traditional" days, whether some like it or not. Some even wear bikinis at the beach, shock and horror! As for the FMP, the Thai authorities could stop it all anytime they want, but they don't- care to guess why? BigC
sometimes an act of rape well most of the time anact of rape is allso an act of revenge such as an asault or a someone being bullied. i have always tried to talk young girls to be polite to people as to avoid being the subject or rape or being bullied by a male that is 3 times stronger than the female. As a whole i find Isrealis quite rude and agressive. I do not mean to dicriminate but just my experience with allot of specially the younger genoration. I have spoken to some of my Isreali friends who are quite allot older and they tell me that they do not mix with the younger crowd as they are yound fresh our of national service and basically just don;t care. i have found the women to be quite agressive even with thai people in aurthority calling the Thai police to their faces stupid andother stuff. No one deserves tobe raped but as they say if one goes to seek then they shall find. i hope that other young women can learn to keep low key out here be polite and firm and do not take the piss in this country especially around drunk Thai males or forangs

KTD
It is ridiculous for anyone to try and justify this. It is ridiculous to blame the victim what ever the circumstance. Crime rate stats by country are easy to find on the internet. Why do we have to go through this debate every time about what place has more or less crime here/there/anywhere?? How do we get to country bashing from discussion about a women being assaulted? There is crime on this planet, simple fact. Common variables affecting crime usually population density, economy, stability.. but what ever the reason it does not make it right. Common or not common rape or attempted rape is still not acceptable. Even if the man miss judged the situation, what happened to No means No? I truly wish Mankind were not so evil that if a women enjoying herself even if over indulged gets rape/attempted rape instead of assistance. It is still ok to be a good person. even on the internet!!
shafty
Isn't it sad? On the last 3 pages, most of the posts discuss whether it's the fault of the girl, society problems, how's the 'rape situation' in the rest of the world, if the opinon of poster xxx is right or not right and so on. What happend doesn't really play any role since page 3 or so. Almost Nobody actually asked anything about the girl and also no one asked anything about the arrested guy. There were several posts in the beginning which mentioned that the news reports don't make sense or in other words, that it's totally unknown what happened after reading these news because most of these articles contradict each other. What does that show us? Thai authorities obviously do everything right: Finding an offender very quick and declare the case as closed. There might be some discussions about this terrible crime that happened last month or a few weeks ago... but hey, at least they found the guy who did that! The guy who was arrested did very likely not commit this crime and half of the local population in Haad Rin knows that. There were Thai(!) people who witnessed that the arrested burmese can't have been there and there is even an explanation for it's injuries. I don't know what's true. I just find it sad that no one seems to be interested and some members feel invited for some pub talk instead.

I truly wish Mankind were not so evil that if a women enjoying herself even if over indulged gets rape/attempted rape instead of assistance. It is still ok to be a good person. even on the internet!! we as humans are also too quite to judge what is in front of our eyes. We see what is in front of us. Isrealy woman raped. Then we make a full conculsion based on one statement. There could be 1 million other things that surrounded this event. With rape being very hard to prove and very easy to blame someone for. It is the most important thing for people not to pass judgement. I have had a friend back home who was falsy excused of rape and what he went through was discusting and is has still not recovered. They adverntually caught the guilt person yet no appollgiy was given and not even a note in the local paper about the real rapest being convicted which left the town looking down on him. He had his dorr borken down at 0400 am then arrested and forced to give seman samples all because when the police were with the victim outside where the incodent took place she though it was him as he walked into budgens But she was wrong. As for rape and assault being wrong. Is the death penalty wrong or is death or murder considered ok if a judge sentences someone. Is locking someone up who has done something wrong for 99 years a form of kid napping. If someone has done wrong to you then an act of revenge is a short cut of going through a long and length court process which could end up with you losing anyway. I am not saying this lady deserved to be raped but from my experience with Isrealis is that they are very firey tempered and speak down to people specially Thais. Maybe she was not one of these Isralis but one says if you play with fire then .... well. As afarther of duaghters it is specially diffuclt out here but i shall do what i can to bring upmy kids to avoid these situations i know invinsiblity is out of the question but from what i gather a rapest wants to enforce his power of the female to make him self feel big. If i can educate my daughters to be polite and bide there time and walk away from danger then well my job is done. Women that lead drunken men on also then pull away are also asking for trouble. I am not trying to affend people just tell it as it is, I just hope that the victim recovers and they caught the right person

BigC
Typical Isreali. She did not get rapped as she was rescued by some people walking by with a flash light. She then complained about the lack of security at the Full moon after she was rescued from getting raped. So let me get this straight. She was rescued and she didnot get rapped and still complained that there is not enough security there. I suppose when u come from a country where they put walls around people they do not like then security is a bit slack. or may be we should hold all parties in prisons to be on the safe side with miltery guards on stand by

Anyway peopleget raped in Jails so it does not mattere how much security there was i still think things would go wrong. anyway she forgot why she was there in the first place i assumed that the FULL moon was a celbration of freedome with out laws. So let me get this right people go to full moon to go a bit crazy and they do not want police to stop them. Yet they want the police to be there to stop rapes and muggings. You can not have it all. Anyway i suppose if each person was assignemnt a personal security guard for the night then everything would be alright People always hate the aurhorities but when things go wrong they love to blame them for not doing enough. Not that i authority i just cannot understand when she blamed lack of security instead of just blaming the pervert that tried it on. She was lucky that theyre are decent people about that helped her they did not have to they could have just cearried on walking. How about thanking the people rarther than complaining.
