PHUKET: -- The Thai Meteorological Department today issued a “torrential rain” warning for much of Thailand as tropical cyclone Gaemi in the South China Sea is expected make landfall over central Vietnam this weekend.

“This will affect Thailand during October 4-8,” said the warning, issued by TMD Acting Director-General Somchai Baimoung.

The outfall from Cyclone Gaemi is expected to combine with the prevailing southwest monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand, the South and the Andaman Sea, including Phuket.

“These [together should] cause torrential rain with heavy to very heavy [rain] in some places of the lower North, the Northeast, the Central, the East and the upper South of the country,” said the warning.

“People in the risk areas should beware of the severe weather. Strong wind waves up to three meters high were expected in the Andaman Sea. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats keep ashore,” the warning added.

Batten down the hatches and make sure you have your emergency beers stored.

Why? I have never seen these warnings from TMD come true when other sites are predicting much better weather. The only storms that happen here are the ones TMD did not predict. They do issue a warning though after the weather has been bad for hours or even longer.

windguru is saying about 40cm of rain on sunday in phuket, not much the other days, i think we can handle that. in windguru we trust.

Actually, windguru is very accurate up to 24-30ish hours but not over that. Very accurate if u look at it daily.

Over 36h, I have seen many cases where their forecasts have been completely changed the next day

Yes, very true. But TMD is not even accurate about the present weather :), so WindGuru is the best available, we'll have to do with that.

Gaemi is neither a cyclone nor a typhoon.

According to the Hong Kong observatory it's categorized as: severe tropical storm

For the track information:

http://www.hko.gov.h...wx/tc_gis_e.htm

A cyclone is a generic term for tropical depression, tropical storm, severe tropical storm, typhoon, severe typhoon and super typhoon.

I've been looking for a decent weather forcast app or website since relocating to Phuket. I checked out Windguru and can't see much. Perhaps it's my browser.

I hate to sign in to a site without knowing what I'm getting. It looks like you have to sign in, but the example maps were undecipherable. What do you get for a free account? Couldn't find anywhere where they said how much a paid account costs. Anyone know?

I'm interested in a general weather report, but also surf reports for the Andaman coast - not because I surf, but because I swim, and bad days for surfers are good days for swimmers. Does windguru offer that kind of information? Or are there any other websites or apps that can do the job?

Cyclone has rotation by definition. Tropical depression etcetera may not have rotation

You do not have to sign in.

Here is example for Kata Beach: http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=208473

Wind direction, wave periodicity, waves high, cloud cover, rain (mm/3h...)

It takes some getting used to but is very good up to 30h for any coastal area: Offshore censors.
