About a week ago I had a good dental experience at the clinic on Suthep and Canal Rds. The building is on the corner of Suthep, across from CMU. I had my teeth cleaned and a front tooth filling replaced. The female dentist was very gentle and she matched the filling to my tooth perfectly. The cost was about 600 baht for the cleaning & another 600 for the filling. There was also a 50 baht sterilization fee (whatever that is).

I dread dental visits and procrastinate as long as possible before submitting to the ordeal so I was pleasantly surprised by the actual experience. I didn't need any pain medication because the drilling was minor so can't comment on that area.

No mention of Grace for over a year, why is that?

I think it's time to get a cleaning and check-up, my first since 2000, and I want someplace convenient and easy to find. I know where Grace is, and since I don't go very often I don't mind paying a little above average for a quality job. Should I go to Grace, or is some other place that's easy to get to recommended?

I recently went to dental 4 you, near Thai Pae Gate. I had a crown that fell out, that needed replacing.

First they recommended replacing the filling underneath, 1,200 baht. I was quite surprised by this price for a simple filling, in Chiang Mai.

They now say that they'll need to do some gum surgery, 5,000 baht before they can do the crown, which is 8,000 for metal, to 15,000 for ceramic.

I wasn't expecting prices this high. I may go elsewhere for another quote.

Another, and possibly cheaper, option is the Payon Dental Clinic - Dr. J

After reading the above recommendations I have now attended on several occasions and found ithe clinic fine in terms of competence, price and parking.

Check with poster elektrified, he very recently reported a really painfull dental experience.

chiang mai must be a mind reader because I never mentioned the name of the clinic!

But I can not recommend the clinic. The doctor is nice and I will say that he was experienced (about 10 years) and had a steady hand. On the day of my appointment to have a filling replaced the doctor gave me the first injection of anesthetic and didn't even inject the complete vial. (I had discussed pain issues with him at the initial appointment a few days before and he assured me he would be ready to deal with any situation.) I asked that he give the complete vial and then a 2nd one. That started a bit of a disagreement and 'a back and forth' with him and I. He insisted he begin drilling into my tooth and if I needed more medicine then "no problem". I almost went through the ceiling. The pain was unbelievable! He gave another injection but the anesthetic was not very strong and I could still feel the cold air he blew on my tooth. He told me that it was the strongest anesthetic he stocked. He insisted that I should once again let him drill and if I still needed another injection, "no problem". Again, unbelievable pain. He had to stop drilling and was argumentative about giving another injection. He would not give another. Instead he asked me "what I wanted to do?" "Let him finish the procedure or stop?" It was a strange response from a professional. What could I do at this point? Get up and walk out with a hole in my tooth? He had to put in the new filling without properly drilling the hole in the tooth and told me it would not be a good, strong filling and perhaps not last very long.

The entire time I was perspiring profusely and my fists were clenched. There was an uneasy tension in the air between the doctor and I. The whole procedure lasted 90 minutes. The pain lasted for at least the next 12 hours and I could not tolerate anything hot or cold in my mouth or chew for another 2 days.

For me it is a no brainer. Make the patient comfortable, relaxed, and pain-free and they will come back. He was not the first dentist in Thailand to argue with me about giving pain medicine.

This account sounds suspicious. It is a hard to believe story at best.

14 years between cleanings ? I would not want to sit too close to you.

Hi,

thought I'd hijack the thread. I need to get three crowns done in July (just the regular metal ones). can anyone recommend a good dentist (name and practitioner) as well as recent cost for one crown. like I said I need three done and this isn't covered on insurance so whilst I don't want to pay a small fortune I still want a very good, pain free job ;-)

many thanks

I would go to Elite at Pantip Plaza.

Both gf and I have had some complex stuff done there very well. All dentists there are good in our experience and they show a menu price for crowns- may even be on their website. May not be the cheapest in town but good value for good work, we have found.

Good luck

Try to find them on website. Easy to access their clinic since they locate in city area.

IM me if need reference.

Good luck!

@Stament

I would recommend DENTAL WORLD Clinic. I have done 2 implants with Dr.Surasak. He did great job and professional. I paid about 60,000 THB/tooth. I did not have any English communication with them. The doctors and staffs can speak English fruently.

I tried DENTALWORLD clinic and dentists are professional with good English speaking.  The place is nice and hygiene.  Staffs are very helpful and good English (that's important). Very convenient to go by tuk-tuk, even riding a motor-bike by myself :-)

My husband (from Bahrain) had 2 implants and no problem at all after checking up every 6 months.  Dr.Surasak (an owner) did very good jobs for Implants and teeth wisdom extraction.  Reasonable price and not marked-up for FARANG.

Dr.Benchaporn and Dr.Pattarika did very good jobs for me as well.

Here is the list of dental clinics and the cost

I'm currently in Chiang Mai and I just wanted to add, Grace advertises that they have the same technology and use the same implants my high end US dentist and periodontist use.  Of particular interest to me, they have 3D imaging-on site manufacture-same day crowns.

This year I've paid $2,000 USD for one crown, $7,000 US for one implant ($5,000 actual implant, $2,000 crown), and $2,000 USD for a bone graft in anticipation of an implant (although I don't need any more of those).  Grace is significantly, SIGNIFICANTLY less for literally identical products.

I first made an appoinment with Elite, based on reviews elsewhere, but they seemed unsure that they could do two crowns within a week.  After reading this thread, I contacted Grace about the crowns and an implant and now I'm seeing both tomorrow for consultations.

If I lived here, so time wasn't an issue, I'd possibly go with Elite, but time is an issue for me.  As for the implant, Grace uses name brands that are used in the US, so I could potentially have an implant done here, and the crown (with compatible screw) placed in the US.  It's possible Elite does as well, but they don't advertise they do.

For visitors, Grace is still shockingly inexpensive.  I'll report back after I see how things go.  I certainly appreciate the reports of others.

I went through 6 clinics and at least 8 dentists, for a variety of reasons including virtually every Thai dentist that I encountered failing to properly anesthetize me along with quality issues, and a couple of dentists with zero patient skills.
Finally went to Grace Clinic over two years ago.  Absolutely top notch.  I've seen three dentists at the clinic including Dr Korakot who is just a lovey woman - she has a great team!  They have the quality of care that enjoyed from my dentist back in the US.  I can't recommend any other clinic in Chiang Mai although I could tell you some clinics to steer clear of.  But if you go to Grace Clinic, you don't have to worry about it - you've got the best.  Maybe they are a bit more expensive, but the cost is totally worth it.

Been a customer at Grace since I moved here 6+ yrs ago.

In that time, I've had:

Emergency root canal surgery (they saved the tooth)

A crown.

A root canal under a US done crown.

Another crown.

And myriad routine procedures, such as thrice yearly periodontal cleanings, etc.

Although I am American, I inherited my mother's family crap English teeth, and it has been a lifelong struggle keeping them in my head. At nearly age 61, happy to say I still have them all.

I think some people who go to Grace are fixated on seeing only the big gun owner.

Each dentist who works there (almost all are female, and professors at the CMU dental college) charge whatever fees they want.

With all my myriad procedures over the years, I have had various dentists, all of whom were excellent, and I question anyone stating that the pricing is twice other dental clinics. I don't need the founder/head of the firm/rock star to do a simple perio cleaning. Each dentist in that office has a clear area of expertise. You go with whoever is available in that area. They are all good at Grace.

I always ask many friends here who have had procedures done at other dental clinics how much they paid; I would guesstimate that Grace is maybe at most 20% more than the bog standard clinic. Not double, not even 50% more.

I am OK with that, as it is maybe more hygienic than the best office in the US I've ever visited, a very pleasant and relaxing environment, with very modern equipment, and the staff are super efficient and friendly.

Grace has my vote 100%

One other thing.  The take the time to teach you the correct way to care for year teeth between appointments.  I've completely changed my brushing and flossing habits, have become extremely consistent with the methods they taught me, and I can tell the results.  The care! Truly care!  And I love them for it!

I left Elite Smile specially because the the dentist (a guy) failed to anesthetize me, and then refused to give me additional anesthetic when I asked for it.  Instead I got "Almost finished, almost finished" for another five minute of pure, intense hell.  They lost my business and I can't recommend them if you have issues with pain.

Having been through the exact same experience with multiple dentists here in Thailand, I agree with elektrified.  It's our teeth, our pain tolerance, and our experiences.  Not yours.  And I could care less if you don't believe me either circusman.  I can only assume that you're clowning around about other people's suffering.  Not funny.  Try contributing something constructive, or better, nothing at all.

I had a root canal and crown done at Grace 3 years ago. Now on xray I have been told in Aus. that the RCT has failed due to poor technique by the specialist who called herself an endodentist. I would be happy to send out the xray so you can check this with your dentist. 2 dentists have told me it was not done properly and has led to it slowly failing. I have not experienced pain yet but in time I am told it will inflame as a result of this poor technique and I have been advised to redo it. I have not run this past Grace yet, but I note others have said RCT treatment there is poor, and general dentistry is hit and miss. However the zircon crown done by the owner was good and has held up so far. Perhaps Bangkok is a better option, or elsewhere.
