Don't get me wrong. I don't blame the victim. But someone should warn tourists not to wear bling especially late at night.

I had once my phone ripped om my waist belt while waiting to cross second road near big c at 9 pm, so maybe people should also not carry a phone.

Yes because you look dorky wearing your phone in a pouch on your belt. Just kidding.

.....WELCOME TO THAILAND........ !!!!!!

it's getting better and better........AMAZING THAILAND.......

I agree,,, it's getting worse... I have an apartment in Jomtien (near the end of Beach Rd) and chose this because of the more quiet location (compared to Pattaya). Fact is there is less traffic but because of that those mototbike hoodlums are using that because of less police and more less people. Reading this... ah well, it is a fact that a lot of foreigners are displaying their 'wealth' too obvious and that of course makes them an easy to spot. As you'll know it's like a Russian invasion out there, which started (and increased) 5 - 10 years ago. They should KNOW it's silly to wear jewelry and chances are the woman (at 3 am walking alone ?) was drunk, so maybe (!) not walking straight which is an even more easy target.

LOS became... Land Of Snatchers ?

The reason these sorts of crimes are on the increase is because there are more foreigners year by year plonking themselves in Thailand and are seen as prime targets by the street gangs, or in other words, there are more victims now available to them. It`s to do with statistics rather than there being less police.

Knowing this fact, foreigners staying here should be more aware, stay alert and be cautious.

Correct, this is the safe way.

I'm just wondering what would happen if you get one of these bastards and break his neck?

Call me old fashioned but I would shoot these dirt bags and hang them beside the city sign.

Common wake up Thailand and get rid of these bastards!

Yup thats old fashioned ! - why don't you try torturing them first, hang, draw and quartering, red-hot pokers ?

Its like the 1512 in here sometimessad.png

I think they should draw the line at using red hot pokers.

A simple key word search 'Snatch Theft Singapore' in Google will show you that it does happen in Singapore, and when I lived there for 12 years, it was also frequent. Singapore ain't as squeaky clean as you say.

As an aside, my maid in Bangkok was talking in her phone in the Makkasan area on Friday morning at 7:30am when two hoodies on a motorcycle snatched her phone and thumped her a couple of times - she's 54. She said they were clearly out of their heads and referred to them as 'yaba monkeys'.

ok, may be I should have written (?) ....at least in Sinpapore there is some kind of LAW and a chance to catch snitches like this.....I heard of OLD ladies being assaulted for goldchains in Elevators but I lived there for a year too and I know its not easy like in Thailand to run and hide for some month....THAT keeps the crime statistics low.... In Thailand they close to NEVER catch anybody as long as it is not in public intrest like this case or the other here in Phuket with the poor Australian lady who died in a similar assault....

Call me old fashioned but I don't think any female should be walking home alone at 3am in any country... didn't everyone learn that in college? It's not a problem unique to Thailand, why does everyone try to make it seem like it is.

True, wise advice, but a sad reflection on human (mostly male) behaviour nonetheless.

I think it is wrong to talk only about what the tourist should not do when discussing prevention of crime. The people should talk more about what the police are going to do in order to combat this crime. The tourist, everywhere in the world, should feel free to walk around at any time of the day wearing gold without thinking of being attacked. It is just a minority of criminals who try to make lives of others miserable. We better concentrate on criminals and how to prevent them doing the crime.

But until the actual arrival of Utopia, let's just use common sense !

Try walking back home past midnight in any big city,

and the chance of being assaulted, robbed or raped

is greater.

So, what's the big deal here ?

Personally, I think comments for news like this should

be locked and not allowed in TV. Just my opinion.

What do suggest - some sort of half-assed curfew ?

I don't think I implied that at all. How about not walking alone at 3am? Be aware of your surroundings. If a motorbike is approaching you while you're walking, face them, let them know you see them coming, back away from the street... follow a well-populated path... follow a path that has an escape route... I mean these are all common sense things that one should do in any country in any city while walking alone at 3am, aren't they?

Furthermore, don't carry a giant purse with you... carry a clutch, and keep your cellphone and a few bucks in your pocket in case your purse is stolen.

There's like a million ways to avoid being the target of a crime, and minimize the potential damage done if a crime does happen to occur.

Nope. No dumb suggestions. You implied using, OMG w00t.gif Common sensethumbsup.gif

For once I agree with anyone who thinks these punks should have unspeakable things done to them

Violence towards women should not be tolerated in any country

It's one thing stealing a womans bag... but stab her?

That's assault with a deadly weapon that can easily result in someone's death.

We all know it's worse in the UK than it is in Thailand but if it is not severely dealt with it's only a matter of time.

It takes a certain type of lowlife to stab a women and they will never change because their brain doesn't work like a normal persons. They are dead of emontions, the scum of the earth.

I'd put them up against a wall and shoot them or worse as a warning to all that this will not be tolerated..

Then the scum rats would think twice before attacking defenseless women.

Prevention of crime is making the them hard targets instead of soft (Easy prey). Your focus is on the criminal. There will always be criminals preying on people. Really it's just common sense for anyone to not walk alone at 3am ANYWHERE. Thai's are notorious for living in the moment. It may not have been someone preying on victims but just saw an opportunity and went for it. I doubt it was the first time and since they got away with it i'm sure it won't be the last. Being near Pattaya though where drugs are rampid. Typically hard drugs and crime go hand in hand.

This actually is amazing when you consider that it follows on the heels of the virtual carbon copy incident in Phuket where Australian woman Michelly Smith was fatally wounded.

The two culprits as I recall were rounded up, charged, tried, convicted & sentenced to life in prison all within 6 weeks of the event.

One would have hoped and thought that such events would deter these desperados from such crimes but it seems sadly that isn't the case,... or maybe in the case of the Phuket assailants it was just their "having bad luck" that the victim died.

So the logic is probably something like:

"Victim dies,- that's very bad luck for bag grabber/slasher"

"Victim does not die,- that's very bad luck for victim but the grabber/slasher unlikely to be caught as investigation into crime will be weak to zero!"

No CCTV coverage and no witnesses of the crime; so extremely tough to identify the criminals. On the plus side there is a news report that the police paid for the victims medical care.

Please tell me why mine wife can not stay at a party in Belgium and come later at home then me. Shy come home with a taxi and he stop at the door. But shy have to step outside and have to walk 10 minutes to go to the taxi. Yes I am sometimes afraid but then again, must I lock up mine wife ho is 32 years old/young? Its same when you tell me that shy cane not walk with shorts in the summer.

I understand that English is not your native language. But I must advise you that when referring to a female you should spell that word as "she", not "shy".

Also, when referring to people use "who", not "ho". People may get a very wrong idea of what you intended to say, especially when it comes to women tongue.png

-Chad-

or shall I refer to you as -English- teacher?

-Eddy1960- sends 19 Posts in more than 5 years and you scare him off, even more?

Chad, please, write some posts in French, Dutch or German, Belgium has all three languages!

Not nice! No, "Fingerspitzengefuehl", a bit 'indelicate."whistling.gif

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium

Just to confuse the issue, arguably Belgium has four languages! Dutch Dutch and Flemish Dutch are quite significantly different from each other.

Wikipedia, he say:

The differences between Dutch in the Netherlands and Flemish are significant enough for Flemish and Dutch television shows with rather informal speech customarily to become subtitled for the other country in the standard language.

1 make police stop all young Thais riding motorcycles carrying knives and arrest them on the spot.

2 stop blaming the victims and warn people that LOS means Land of Scum.

3 make the lazy and corrupt Baht buses...meter taxis and BIB get out and do their dam_n jobs.

4 catch the thieves and publicly punish them in cages at the Central Festival.

make it a well known fact.

??? How many of these punk kids are the children of the BIB ...METER TAXI...BAHT BUS DRIVERS???

And the circle goes around and around!

The point is you people are quick to come along predicting gloom and doom, and a drop in tourist numbers. That's not just not happening.

Yup. A few years back Thailand was voted #1 tourist destination in the world by the Lonely Planet magazine. And Bangkok was voted the best city in the world for 2012.

Yes Thailand is now getting dangerous a bit like Brazil in the hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio we were told by the hotel staff not to wear any jewellery that could be seen and take a taxi whenever possible rather than walking on the streets, especially at night time.

Good advice for Thailand also.

In a ''free' world we should be able to walk the streets wearing what ever we want. The time we stop doing that then we have lost it. LOS holiday destinations bring in a lot of cash, so why not supply more BiB 24/7 on the streets to warn off the scrotes.

but thats the problem, 'We have lost it' certainly here in the west where our 60 year or so experiment with socialist 'society is to blame' philosophy + the horrific 'free' welfare state has destroyed all boundries of behaviour.
