Visa Needed For Travel To Burma? Us Citizen

Hard to keep up with the restrictions. When we went to Burma we traveled by car from Thachlit to the Chinese border. We recieved are visa there at te border.

Since then have heard rumors saying you have to have it before going and lately one that you can get one when you arrive.

Who really knows. suggest you contact the Burmese airline roughly across the street from the Shangrala and ask them they are specialist in flying into their country. Can't remember it's exact location either across the street or a short distance either way. I think it is called Bagan Air.

Hope this helps.

The information is really hard to find because of the multitude of companies offering visa services, I flew to Yangon back in June on business and actually got refused to fly by AirAsia because they didn't believe my paper work was in order to obtain a business visa on arrival. Flew 2 hours latter on Bangkok Air who made me sign a waiver that I would pay the return flight if refused. Got the business visa but it did take around 90 mins after landing, but this looked typical.

Tourist visa are available online 3 days before travel from the government website below, although I haven't used this service.

Business Visa rules are here

Hope this helps as it was difficult to find this information.

You are correct I remember a while back we had a thread about this and it was mentioned then that you could do it on line. Forgot all about that.

Rumors dam rumors.

I had heard one that if you were going to go touring you had to have a guide. I know when we traveled through to the Chinese border the driver (he was a Thai) had all are paper work and did all the talking. Even at the border in Mai Sai where we crossed in. A friend told me he had taken the bus half way to China and the bus driver had all the paper work for ever one on the bus.

OP,

Visas must be obtained prior to arrival in Myanmar, with the exception of arranging a Visa On Arrival (VOA), or through brief visits at certain border areas.

Only certain companies/agencies offer this service, and it does attract an additional fee - however if you aren't located near an embassy (the usual place for most people is the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok) - or you don't have time to stop and arrange one - then the VOA service is worth the price.

The government e-visa service is not live yet, and we don't know when it will be. The most recent information on this is located here

For information on the actual process involved in getting a visa from the Embassy in Bangkok - see this post here.

Hope this clears things up!

cheers
