Smokeless Tobacco In Thailand

Recommended Posts

This is intended to be a discussion of the law. It is not a solicitation for sources of smokeless tobacco, nor should such discussion occur here. The question is, can anybody cite actual law banning the importation of up to 250 grams of smokeless tobacco for personal use?

It is definitely unlawful to import smokeless tobacco to Thailand for sale. It is unlawful to sell smokeless tobacco in Thailand. On the other hand, it is clearly legal for somebody entering Thailand to bring in up to 250 grams of smokeless tobacco for personal use.

So what about having an overseas friend or supplier post 200 grams of smokeless tobacco to Thailand for personal. Is this legal as well?

The question is, I suppose, whether the same import limitations that apply to persons entering Thailand apply to personal shipments to the Kingdom. Does the same law cover both instances?

If you talk about where to get such products, there are some who think you may run afoul of this forum rule:

16) Not to post about gambling, betting, pornography, illegal drugs, fake goods/clothing etc and other activities that are officially illegal in Thailand.

However, a discussion of the law will not violate the rule. I also hope not to have a debate about the merits or evils of tobacco.

Can anybody reference the law on this?

Are you talking about that stuff, I think it's scandinavian, that you put against your cheek and gum to help you stop smoking? I think that it's called snoot, snoos or something like that. Moist stuff that you keep in the fridge. I really can't understand why it is illegal. It's only the same as chewing tobacco after all.

Sorry, but I have no idea whether you are allowed to import if for personal use.

I believe the OP is referring to Snus.

I have no knowledge of the law regarding sale, use or importation to Thailand.

It is very confusing, I checked the duty free allowance when a traveller enters the Kingdom. Thai Airways duty free allowance guide says 200 cigarettes only, other airlines say cigarettes or 250 grams of "smoking tobacco" and Cathay says 200 cigarettes or 250g cigars or 250g tobacco.

The word tobacco on CX's site would lead me to think it is okay for pipe tobacco, cigarette tobacco, snuff, snuss, chewing tobacco but then the official site below says "smoking tobacco" there is an e-mail address on the site - perhaps they can give you a clear answer. Importing would be a totally different set of rules possibly much for complicated/confusing.

I saw plenty Scandinavian bars and restaurants in Pattaya advertising for it, telling Scandinavian customers they could buy it there.

in a previous thread it is advised that there is an outfit in Thailand that sells locally made snus by mail order...search around TV using 'snus' for the details

the thai chew (made by scandinavians in thailand with local tobacco) sounds a bit expensive but I am a 40 year Copenhagen user and anything is better than smoking if yer a nicotine addict...

and snus withdrawal is worse than cigarettes...but I got a load in my gum under my left nostril right now as I write this from the Dubai duty free...

haven't smoked in 5 months...and never intend to again; I'll just haveta endure the pain when the snoose runs out which will be sometime soon as the general feeling is that all tobacco should be banned, smokeless or otherwise...

there will always be a good market amongst the loggers and fishermen in the US Pacific Northwest...

an ex she said: 'do yew expect me to kiss you with that disgusting stuff in yer mouth?'...'come over here babe as smokeless tobacco is an aide to sex as ye don't haveta fumble with cigarettes before and after the business...'

200 cigarette or 250 grams of other tobacco products (snus, cigars, pipe tobacco, etc.) is allowed to come in through customs with passengers. That is the law. The question is whether that law also allows one to import for personal use through the mail that same 250 grams of tobacco. It is definitely illegal to import snus for resale in Thailand The Swedish bars that do it are breaking the law, but that is their business.

Some folks have opined that this is not legal, but there is a Swedish firm that mails snus to Thailand in less than 250 gram increments with full customs declarations and it comes through no problem. This leads me to believe that it must be legal for these small personal use amounts to come in by mail. The cost of this Swedish snus even with shipping is lower than Copenhagen in the US, and it is better quality.

I was just hoping for a citation to the law that allows or disallows the posting of snus to Thailand for personal use. I'll keep looking.

I used to do everything: cope, skaol, huh? no skoal lol, husky, timberwolf, sweed snus bah.gif , kayak, etc. I don't think there's a flavor or brand sold in the world that I haven't tried. I can only say one thing after all this testing; Sweed Snus is foul stuff not even worthy of using under any circumstances. All the US brands are pretty good.

Remember that folks, The Swedish stuff is bad and the US brands are good.

Never mind if all the "Scandis" like the Swedish stuff.
