Apple Cider Vinegar For Weight Loss ... Any Feedback?

Nothing new but I got this idea from this promotional video for an interesting weight loss pill (not for sale in Thailand).

The doctor promoting it suggests some "do it yourself" options for those not taking his pill.

1. Eat more Potassium. I think this isn't very controversial. Probably much more controversial is that increasing Adiponectin (presumably can be sourced from potasium) boosts so called fat burning hormone.

http://www.healthali...f-potassium.php

From the pill promoter:

“A lack of adequate adiponectin is emerging as a significant factor in people’s inability to melt flab and stay slim.”

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Which is what I started the thread about.

The idea is to take 2 tablespoons of the stuff (diluted I think) before high carb meals.

I think a debatable idea but wonder have any of you tried it?

The doctor links obesity with insulin resistance even for the majority of fat people who aren't clinically diabetic. He contends there is evidence that apple cider vinegar addresses this problem:

If you’re overweight, there’s a good chance that you’re experiencing some level of insulin imbalance, resulting in excess glucose, or sugar, in your system.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re diabetic, it does mean that your body’s insulin, or glucose regulator, becomes less effective at lowering your blood sugars.

...

A recent study found that consuming 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before a high carb meal significantly reduces blood glucose levels for those people with insulin resistance, which is that imbalance I spoke about.

The video link I am referring to in transcript form. I am not endorsing it but I find the Apple Cider Vinegar idea interesting:

I had a friend who swore by it. ( Apple Cider Vinegar )

He would drink it diluted in a glass of water

I have not tried it myself.

But, I will tell you another thing I did use it for.

Hair rinse. It is Excellent!!

Just put a small amount in a squirt bottle or plastic water bottle & fill the rest with water.

When using a regular bicycle type water bottle I put about 3/4 inch in then the rest water

Couple times a week after showering before getting out squirt some in your hair & rub it around

You can rinse or not. It smells like vinegar only while wet when dry there is no smell.

Rinse if it bothers you.

Anyway it cleans all the crap that shampoos & conditioners leave behind.

You will notice a difference.

My problem is here in Thailand I only see small pricey bottles of it.

So have not been using it here. I hope to find some Thai brand at a decent price.

I bought a large bottle (32 ounce) of S&W brand Apple Cider Vinegar at Villa for 170 baht. I think not a bad price. I have heard about the benefits for hair as well. Thanks for the info.

I should also add that the Doctor who suggested it also included two other tips for the do it yourself people.

I mentioned two.

The other two are get enough sleep! I think it has been definitely proven that lack of sleep is directly linked to obesity.

Also, reduce stress which he says if you don't do, the Vinegar won't work. He suggests a technique in the link I included before.

While I understand the Doctor is after big profits, I do feel it adds credibility to his pitch that he suggests alternative non-pill methods.

BTW: He ALSO suggests good diet and exercise. That's a given. But as many people realize, the vast majority of fat people who try diet and exercise alone FAIL in the long term. I am definitely in the "there is more to it" camp.

JT,

There are only a few pills that really work and those are often illigal with serious side effects (i still tried a few). Anyway, in the end it all comes down to you diet (and i don't mean crash diets) just controlling your food intake.

The pills and apple cider vinegar your talking about if it were to have any effect the effect would only be a few percent and that is something you will only notice in years not months. Really, exercise and diet (diet the more important part for the weight loss) are needed.

I know the orthodox views that it's only about diet and exercise. I do not believe that and never will, but thanks for sharing.

I agree there is no magic pill and may never be. (Actually I think there will be but certainly not yet.) For the vast majority of people to hope for long term success, they're looking at bariatric surgery, and that's pretty horrible. Doctors who tell their fat patients, just go home and diet and exercise and can offer nothing else, they know full well their advice will fail for the vast majority of their patients, and that's a fact.

Its because people want it easy. You love to eat, at least i got that impression from your topics.

You cant get lean without sacrifice else everyone was lean.

Google uk muscle and DNP for a magic and effective pil. Yet not without risks but its one of the few things i know that works.

Anyone taking ACE inhibitors (probably a fair percentage of TV members) and certain other medications need to be aware that raised potassium levels can have a severe health impact and such dietary changes should be guided by qualified medical opinion, not quack remedies espoused on anonymous internet fora.

Google 'hyperkalemia' and note its significance for death row inmates.

OK, after one day on the Apple Cider Vinegar program I have some comments.

The vinegar (diluted) tastes neither pleasant nor unpleasant. I actually like it a little bit. After drinking it on empty stomach I feel like I reek of vinegar. Again, not bad, just interesting. I was concerned it might cause an upset stomach but not so far. One thing I have noticed is there might be a psychological result of drinking the acid. You see the thing is if you take the trouble to do this ritual you are doing something, whether it helps or not. So in deciding what food choices to make after drinking it, I think there is greater chance of picking healthier options. So far I haven't really noticed any reduction in appetite (or an increase). Some claim it helps with digestion. No comment ... yet.

JT,

Just let us know, and if it helps you then its good. Just don't expect miracles, i would not have been busting my ass in the gym and controlling my food intake the last year if i thought it could be done easier. I did try a few aids and they did help but in the end its how much you burn.

Anyway good luck with it and if you pick healthier options its always good.

As you might have gathered, I am going to give the ACV thing a trial for a while and see how it goes.

Some new stuff about it:

I found Big C Extra (ex-Carrefour) has Casino brand ACV much cheaper than the best price at Villa

Unfiltered (and organic) ACV would obviously be better. Can't find that locally and if I could I reckon it would very expensive. So the question now is whether if any ACV is effective, does it NEED to be unfiltered, or is the filtered stuff totally worthless? My feeling is that the filtered stuff is still strong stuff but obviously can't really answer this question.

Several sources say drink the ACV in WARM water. So I started that.

I don't know how many minutes before eating you are supposed to drink it, so I am mixing that up. 15 minutes to an hour.

Apparently the vinegar can damage tooth enamel. I believe that. So now I am using a straw and gulping it down past the teeth area.

Only a few days, totally anecdotal, very possible PLACEBO effect, but I have noticed a positive change in perception of digestion and also rather surprising one large evening meal that I was planning on eating I found I just wasn't hungry and skipped the meal entirely. I am not big on skipping meals because yes eating delicious food is a great pleasure for me. I do try in general to only eat if actually hungry rather than because the clock says mealtime.

I take one or two teaspons of ACV a day. I mix it with cold water and orange flavored Metemucil because I do not like the Vinegar taste. Also, keeps me regualr:)))

You should use the unfiltered/undistilled version. With "mother" as they call it. You will see the sentiment settled in the bottom of the bottle. Shake before using. They sell the Bragg's brand at the Market located under the Central Mall Pattaya. At least they did about 6 months ago.

You should be taking it for 3-6 months before noticing any benefits.

The "Mother" huh? That sounds real scientific. coffee1.gif

I think that manufacturer made up that Mother stuff to push sales. Good for them. I agree organic unfiltered would obviously be better for sure though.

Anyway obviously doing 2 tablespoons before every meal is a bigger dose.

Thanks for the tip. I would have looked there anyway but its good to know it's stocked there.

BTW: I don't have any illusions that I will ever look like a Men's Health model. Even if that was genetically possible, I wouldn't have the discipline.

Also keep in mind that every single individual has their own individual health factors. What works for one person won't work for all. Many of us were born as fat babies which means almost definitely becoming a fat adult. Many of us DO have medical issues with blood sugar, family histories of diabetes even if not clinically diabetic, thyroid hormone issues, and so many other PERSONAL medical factors.

Thanks for the tip on where to buy JT

Filtered vs unfiltered I can only imagine it is just the apple they are filtering

the pulp from. So would guess it is all equally good in this respect.

I tried Apple cider vinegar for a while because it is recommended as a cure for gout.

Didn't notice any difference, probably stopped taking it too soon.

Mix with honey if you have trouble with the taste.

Yes mixing with raw organic honey is recommended in some sites I have perused. Even suggesting there is a synergistic benefit of the mix. However, for now I am not doing that, because after all honey is sugar and more calories so seems counterproductive if taking ACV to help a little with weight loss. As far as the taste raw with water, I am growing to like it more. I'm a bit of a culinary masochist sometimes perhaps, I also like to eat hot peppers raw. Edited by Jingthing

Some people are so gullible, following quack internet "doctors" and their latest get-thin-quick scam. If you really insist on doing something as stupid as drinking vinegar then say goodbye to your tooth enamel.

Feedback is feedback.

However that was tad harsh.

I didn't buy the doctor's pill and the belief that taking ACV has some effect on how the body processes sugar/insulin is nothing new though I am not claiming it is accepted by the mainstream medical profession. The Mayo Clinic does NOT endorse taking ACV but I am not one to take everything from either mainstream doctors OR internet quack doctors with full confidence.

In any case, tooth enamel is definitely a concern. I am diluting the acid and using a straw but that may not be enough. It is definitely worth being careful with this stuff:

Precautions

Dilute apple cider vinegar in a 1-to-10 concentration with juice, water or tea. This is important to keep the malic and acetic acids from burning your mouth and throat, as well as to protect your tooth enamel. Mix apple cider vinegar with olive oil for use as a salad dressing. The olive oil will both dilute the vinegar and coat your teeth, making a protective layer between your enamel and the acids. Always rinse your mouth and brush your teeth after consuming apple cider vinegar.

Damage to Tooth Enamel

Vinegar is highly acidic and can damage the enamel on your teeth if taken too frequently or in concentrations that are too strong. To avoid this, try diluting your dose with water or drinking through a straw to limit contact with your teeth. Also, rinse your mouth out with water after and never brush your teeth immediately following.

It's a terrible idea to brush your teeth after drinking or eating anything acidic. The acid weakens the enamel and brushing would then wear the enamel out. Oh no wait, some anonymous guy on livestrong.com said it's a good idea so it must be true.

No actually, the advice is:

Dilute the acid well

Use a straw

Rinse the mouth well

LATER brush your teeth

Definitely not right away for the reason you cite

I did not know that about it being hard on tooth enamel.

As I had said I never took it internally but used it diluted as a hair rinse.

But I did squirt the water bottle in my mouth once while showering , swished it around, gargled then spit it out

as I was curious.Thinking if it strips all the rubbish out of your hair that maybe

it would be a good mouth rinse. Wow it was surprising.

It did just that...stripped what was in my mouth. It was really weird & I cannot describe the effect.

Except to say it was like all that lubricates your mouth was gone. Very odd feeling/effect

With the exception of it eating your enamel I imagine it might actually good for your mouth.

Don't women use vinegar as a douche? I believe so & if so it must kill bacteria/be anti bacterial

OK, still sipping the acid, and liking it.

Some more thoughts: ACV is about MORE than possible minor help with weight loss. There are a number of other potential health benefits and some pitfalls as well. Apparently the people that do see weight loss they link to ACV, the typical level is one pound per month, but with some luckier people, two pounds per month.

Doing it gives no liberty to pig out on unhealthy food or to neglect exercise either. If it works for some people, it is merely a BOOST.

I'm feeling there is something to the digestive aid claims and am also feeling somewhat more energetic. Overall, I am motivated to keep with it.

Given that, as long as I'm going through the ritual, I decided to spring for the unfiltered product.

In Pattaya, I found Healthy Mate (made in Thailand) organic unfiltered ACV, 32 ounce, 370 baht at Central Food Hall and Foodland. Over double the cost of the S&W. Oh well.

Healthy Mate was the only brand I saw. I did not see the American brand Braggs. The Thai product appears quite good with the same specs as Braggs.

JT,

Not wanting to burst your bubble but 4500 calories is one pound of fat. This would mean that apple cider vinegar would make you burn about 150 calories a day. That is quite a lot percentage wise it could be more then 5% in a healthy adult. Something that spectacular and not dangerous would already be real famous for it. Believe me if i say that if it would really increase the metabolic rate by 5% many people would take it even some of the illigal and effective fat burners like clenbuterol have a hard time matching that number. Most normal fat burners don't even come there.

Just my 2 cents.

Apparently the people that do see weight loss they link to ACV, the typical level is one pound per month, but with some luckier people, two pounds per month.

It is not too hard to lose a pound a week through diet.

Just take the amount of calories your eating & reduce it by 3500 a week

another way is look at how many calories it takes to maintain the weight you want to target

Then eat that amount.

Sounds way more complicated than it is.

Most folks eat pretty much the same things week in & week out.

So once you get a handle on calorie count after a week or two you have all the info you need.

Also it does not have to be exact.

But if you can count for at least a couple of days before starting a change you will know how many you were eating on average.

Take 3500 / 7 = 500cal less per day

Reduce your intake by that amount & you will see a change

Also some folks need to look at intake vs waste ( a nice way of putting it ) smile.png

If it is not up to par take something at night to help clear you out.

You notice the Thai girls eat like pigs & are thin. Yes that is metabolism for the most part

but most I have met drink things like Fitne Tea at night before bed & swear by it.

The sell it everywhere by the coffee & teas. big C etc.

Cost is pretty low. I think about 140 baht for the bag that has like 30 bags in it?

They make a cup at night with hot water. Let it sit till almost cool & drink it.

Mania, where did you get the 3500 amount of calories. I previously used that too but apparently a kilo of fat is 9000 calories.

Ah i think i know why you are not using a pound as in metric but an US pound. difference of about 10%
