PHUKET: -- An allegedly unprovoked attack by several Russian men at a Phuket beach club early this morning has left two well-known local residents in hospital awaiting surgery.

Canadian Tom Travers, managing partner of Indigo Real Estate agency, was knocked unconscious and had his cheekbone broken in three places during the attack. His girlfriend Jen Khamsorn suffered a broken nose when she was punched in the face.

Both are now at Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket Town.

“Tom has one eye open and he can talk now,” Nick Anthony, founder and managing partner of Indigo Real Estate told the Phuket Gazette.

“They [Tom and Jen] have just had their x-rays. They should be going into surgery sometime this afternoon,” he added.

The altercation occurred just after 2am near the Catch Beach Club at Surin Beach.

“A young Russian man walked up and punched Jen in her face, breaking her nose, then the group were set upon by his [the Russian’s] three friends,” Mr Anthony said.

Two of the attackers were caught and held overnight, but have been released, he added.

“Catch staff, a brave taxi driver and other tourists helped to release Jen from a choke hold that was strangling her, and also subdued two of the attackers,” Mr Anthony explained.

The attackers were reportedly known to be staying in Rawai, he added.

Tourist Police and officers from Cherng Talay Police are now investigating the attack.

The names of the Russian men involved have yet to be released.

The attack comes as British Ambassador Mike Kent, Canadian Ambassador Philiip Culvert and Dutch Ambassador Joan Boer are due to talk about tourist safety in Phuket with Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut.

In the site that shall not be mentioned is another story about this, and that other story sounds much more realistic.

Edit: there is now a new story on that site, very similar to the story in PG. I must say though the first story sounds much more realistic.

Does that mean, this guy is really 32 years old? Property business is aging business?

Russian gang attack Phuket couple at Catch Beach Club

Phuket resident Tom Travers says he and his Thai girlfriend Jen Khamsorn were subjected to an “unprovoked attack” by a group of Russians at Catch Beach Club, Surin, in the early hours of this morning.

PHUKET – January 9, 2013; Speaking from a bed at Bangkok Hospital while he awaits surgery to put a metal plate in his cheek after it was fractured in three places in the fracas, Mr Travers – partner in Indigo Real Estate and a DJ at Bliss Beach Club – told The Phuket News that this was the first time in his nine years of living on the island that anything like this had happened.

Mr Travers, from Canada, was still clearly shaken up as he recounted what happened.

“Jen and I had popped in to Catch Beach Club for a late night drink because we had friends from out of town visiting us.

“We had a feeling there was going to be trouble because there was a guy walking around without a shirt on and that’s never a good sign.”

As they were getting ready to leave at around 2 am, they saw one man – from the group who would later assault them – arguing with a man in English.

“I wanted to get Jen out of that area, so I went to get her. I said hello to the man who was being spoken to by the group and the next thing I knew [one of them] had grabbed Jen by the neck and punched her in the nose (breaking it). I tried pushing them away and then it all became a blur, I was set on by three of them.”

It has been alleged in another news site on the island that the cause of the incident was because one of the members of the group had taken a liking to Ms Jen, to which Mr Travers had reacted aggressively.

Ms Jen vehemently denies this. “I had never spoken to any of them. They could barely speak English – when we were in the Cherng Talay police station later with them, one tried talking to me and I said I had nothing to say to him.”

Also, when they were in the station, through the aid of a translator, Mr Travers was told why the men said they had attacked him and Ms Jen.

“The translator told me that Jen had hit him with a plastic bottle on the back of the head. This was absolute nonsense. Jen was behind me.”

I wonder what the current exchange rate is in Phuket these days? In the bank it is $1 = 31 Baht

Maybe 1 broken Thai ladies face = maybe, just possibly a brown envelope and an escorted walk to the ATM bah.gif

Yet again, nothing good ever happens after midnight, anywhere.

They may have not verbally antagonized any of the Russians, but body language can speak volumes.

Women don't just get grabbed by the throat and punched in the face for nothing,

I suspect the universal catalyst for mayhem, alcohol, reduced decision making to Simian level as usual.

I'm sorry, what normal business man or family man is out at 2 a.m. ?

Why not? If you want to stay out late then being subjected to abuse, verbal or physical is well out of order. If you choose to be a couch potato does anyone question it? Suggest you MYOB.

Well put, things like these never used to happen in the LOS, but now it seems to be a daily occurrance... What a shame, personally I see no rhyme nor reason, for what happens, or do we call it just corruption or revenge?

Somehow I just see a sad scenario evolving.... I think it is much bigger than we all realize.... IMHO

Thanks for all of your great posts on this subject...
