Phuket: Chalong gets first safety zone

PHUKET: Pol Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police yesterday (February 20) visited Soi Ta Iad in Chalong to declare it designated as the 26th Safety Zone in Phuket.

newsjsThe zone will be managed in the same way as the original zones in Patong, with basic information about the area – the number of houses, businesses and restaurants being recorded recorded.

Police officers and local volunteers will patrol the area every day and CCTV will be installed in public areas.

“Soi Ta Iad residents are very active about their security. They went to see me at my office to ask for their road to be declared a safety zone,” Gen Choti told a meeting with local residents and business owners at the Cocoville resort.

He noted that there are many foreigners and tourists living or staying in the area, attracted by the Thai boxing training gyms, resorts and restaurants, but there were still some thieves along the street so people in the area had asked him to create a safety zone.

Pol Lt Col Kitipong Klaikaew, Deputy Superintendent of Chalong Police Station said that from December last year until February, there are around three cases of armed robbery along the street in Soi Ta Iad. Two of the victims were foreigners.

“The thieves were juveniles but some of them carried guns or knives. They have all been arrested,” Col Kitipong said. “We realised that robberies often happened between 9 and 11pm, the time when the foreigners here usually went out to dinner, so we set the police force to survey in the place more by that time.”

He said that since the police presence had been beefed up in that period, there had been no more robberies in Soi Ta Iad.

He added that two more safety zones are being discussed, one in Soi Naya and the other in Soi Khokyang. He said he believed that these would bring more confidence about security among Thais and residents in those areas.

Gen Choti also noted that the new Soi Ta Iad Safety Zone was special because the residents were the ones who had pushed for it. The result, he said, was that close cooperation between police and the community would make it much easier to maintain security.
