webfact Posted March 12, 2013 Share Posted March 12, 2013 Phuket Airport to get an overhaul to accommodate more travelersBANGKOK, 12 March 2013 (NNT) – Airports of Thailand (AOT) is set to push ahead with an overhaul of Phuket International Airport to help it accommodate an expected surge in travelers’ number.Acting AOT President Somchai Sawasdeepon said that there have been more and more air travelers passing through Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket Airport in recent times.Mr. Somchai said it is estimated that the number of travelers to visit Phuket by air will rise to 10 million this year.However, as Phuket International Airport can only handle 6.5 million passengers each year, there has been an urgent need for an improvement of the facilities.The Acting AOT President stated that an overhaul to boost Phuket Airport’s capacity is now underway.He added that the improvement is scheduled to be completed by May 3, after which the airport’s annual capacity will nearly double to 12.5 million.-- NNT 2013-03-12 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Let's hope they deal with the car parking nightmare. The new car park will be planned for opening in about 5 years. I suppose it is a too logical solution to have a park and ride system in place where you park your vehicle in a secure car park and they bus you in from there. I have seen a few drawing about a newer terminal that they think looks like an ocean wave. How many years have they been talking about upgrading HKT? Yet nothing is really being done. How can they say in the OP, that they want to double the airport's capacity without another runway and another terminal? Get real AOT!
