Duangtawan 1400 Baht Vs Suriwongse 1100 Baht Help!

Hi guys,i need some quick advice before i book one of these hotels in next few days please

gonna be in c mai again 7th april - 30th april.

booked online for my last stay at christmas, and got a superior room at the SURIWONGSE for 1100baht a night.

I notice i can get Superior(deluxe) room at the Better DUANGTAWAN for 1400 baht(1200 for run of the house! much difference?)

can anyone advise,is duangtawan worth 300baht more than suriwong?

i was very happy with suriwong, apart from building work opposite constantly! is it still going on?.I liked the room though, huge bed,and air con was great(never used it at xmas)but used it last songkran and very good

I have read good reviews on duangtawan, apart from the very slow lifts, and poor aircon! is this true, good aircon imperitive at songkran.

also suriwong charge 500baht more for 12-15 april, but duangtawan states same charge jan - october

http://www.hotels.chiangmai-online.com/dgtawan.html

advice appreciated.thanks

Reviews of recent stays-Suriwongse Versus Dun2 Wan from another booking service starting with Sa-w........dee

I have eaten in the Suri and had a few drinks in the outside Beer Bar but never actually stayed in Hotel....Other half likes the Dun2....so as they say... up 2 u :o

2006-02-18 until 2006-02-20 Suriwongse Hotel,

Our room was a spacious suite that included two beautiful flower bouquets and a fruit basket in the room. A nice touch! The breakfast (included in the price) was adequate, but paled in comparison to the buffet at the Royal Princess around the corner (which I visited last July). The staff is very friendly and helpful. We returned to Suriwongse Hotel on 2/23 for our last two nights in Thailand and the front desk staff had already completed the reservation form for me. Everyone was exceptionally professional and polite. I highly recommend this hotel since it is a bargain for the overall amenities.

I m a satisfied repeat customer!

2006-02-13 until 2006-02-18 Suriwongse Hotel,

Hotel is ok but in need of some major renovating as it is on the old side. Breakfast was exellent but seeing a roach crawling around the buffet area was not not to appitizing, but this is SE Asia and not a 5 star hotel.

Excellent

2006-02-13 until 2006-02-16 Suriwongse Hotel,

PROBABLY THE BEST LOCATIION FOR THE NIGHT MARKET. THE ROOMS COULD USE REFURBISHING .( BUT I WAS AWARE OF THAT BEFORE BOOKING) THE RESTAURANT WAS QUESTIONABLE AT BEST. BUT ALL ELSE WAS SATISFACTORY.

GREAT RESERVATION SERVICE.

Renaye H.

2006-02-07 until 2006-02-09 Suriwongse Hotel,

This hotel has the BEST location for the night market and all of the shopping in Chiang Mai. This was our second visit to Suriwongse and will probably return to this hotel because of the location. I do think the hotel is getting to look a bit shabby and run down however. The room was musty smelling and could use new carpet and furniture. The hotel staff cleaning staff is great and very friendly and the desk staff is okay.

Good service.

2006-02-06 until 2006-02-13 Suriwongse Hotel,

Great location for night bizarre. Hotel very clean and rooms good size. only fault was being sold a 14k gold ring on the pretence that it was 18k in the hotel jewellry shop. very good and efficient

2006-01-15 until 2006-01-17 Suriwongse Hotel,

Overpriced for what you get... lobby is nice but rooms are old and shabby. Staff was not very friendly or helpful- there are much cheaper and better options in this area

GREAT!

2006-01-14 until 2006-01-21 Suriwongse Hotel,

Suriwongse is a slightly faded hotel, well past its best years. (The same can be said for some of the staff!) Our toilet was leaking and was fixed right away, although we requested a bulb for one of the lamps and after a 7 day stay, it had still not arrived. Rooms are nothing special but if you re just looking for a place to sleep then Suriwongse is more than fine. (Said beds are the most well made I have ever encountered, you could almost break a leg from the tight tuck-ins of the sheets!) The night markets are across the road, which can make the rooms noisy, but if you re an insomniac shopper like me, then you ll have no complaints! (Shoppers alert- best prices can be had at the Warowat markets, and handicrafts are cheap as chips in Hang Dong villiage, so don t be caught out by the inflated night market prices!) Breakfasts are a bit blah, food is so cheap in Chiang Mai you are best just grabbing a coffee and eating brekkie elsewhere. But hey, that s just me! Suriwongse isn t the most glam place in town, but for the price, it s a good deal and an adequate place to recharge your batteries before yet another day of shopping! No problems, I would recommend this service to others.

2006-01-10 until 2006-01-13 Suriwongse Hotel,

Good location, large room & bed. Old Towel needs to be change.

Overall value for money. No problem !

2005-12-27 until 2005-12-30 Suriwongse Hotel,

VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SUITE WE STAYED IN...VERY SPACIOUS AND WELL APPOINTED. HOTEL IS IN AN IDEAL SITUATION FOR ALL ACTIVITIES, PARTICULARLY THE EVENING MARKETS. THE BREAKFAST HOWEVER IS DIRE, SO BEST GO HEALTHY DIET AS COOKED STUFF IS PRETTY POOR, AS IS THE FURNITURE YOU SIT ON ....COULD CERTAINLY DO WITH A CLEAN. PITY SUCH SMALL THINGS DETRACT FROM WHAT IS OTHERWISE A WELL RUN ESTABLISHMENT. TRY AS I DID I COULD NOT GET THE LEAK IN THE BATHROOM FIXED AND HAD TO RESORT TO PLACING THE LEAKING FLEXI-HOSE IN THE WASTE BUCKET TO STOP FLOODING THE FLOOR.....ONLY TO FIND THE CLEANERS WOULD THEN REMOVE IT TO ALLOW THE LEAKING WATER TO GO IT S MERRY WAY OVER THE BATHROOM FLOOR. OH WELL C EST LA VIE, WE STILL HAD A GREAT TIME IN WONDERFUL CHIANG MAI...SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING THAN BANGKOK....AND CLEANER. NO HITCH WITH THIS ONE...ALL WENT SMOOTHLY.

Michael B.

2005-12-24 until 2006-01-07 Suriwongse Hotel,

fantastic in all, except one small thing the room cleaning staff leave the door open when cleaning your room letting in as many mossies that want to come in for a feed later on that night, other than that 10/10 had agreat time and would definately stay here again, thanks! exellent!as always!

Great place to stay, close to the night market.Breakfast buffet is also vey nice.If you can pick a lower floor you will not have a connecting boor. We would stay in this hotel again. Thank you Sawadee.

2006-02-06 until 2006-02-11 Central Duangtawan Hotel, Chiang Mai, Downtown

Very nice hotel in a good location, the rooms are a bit dated but they are very spacious. Sawadee was fast and efficient, I will use them again. ( Also used Asiatravel.com and had nothing but problems )

I really can t say a bad thing about this hotel. Oh yes the lifts...blah blah blah..yes they are slow and yes when it s busy they are a pain, get over it. Great location, nice rooms, good services, nice buffett, and close to the night market. I loved Chiang Mai, please evrybody go up there, it s a great town. Great food and all. As always the booking is easy and secure, I ve used sawadee 5 times and never had a problem.

Great bathroom, great breakfast, the swimmingpool didn t have sun until the afternoon.Staff was very good, always correct and polite.Right in the heart of chiang mai perfect location. If we go to chiang mai again no doubt that we stay here again.

2005-12-02 until 2005-12-05 Central Duangtawan Hotel, Chiang Mai, Downtown

Clean, efficient and courteous service from the hotel and staff. Check in and check out was done with minimum of fuss and without undue delay. Communcation with front desk staff was excellent and friendly. Housekeeping was satisfactory and bell boys were polite and efficient. Few negative points, among which were the really slow elevator/lift; food at coffee house at dinner time lacked inspiration (the khao pad was pathetic); bathroom lacked a hand bidet which is standard equipment for most 4* hotels; no tea making facilities in the deluxe room, this is disappointing because the time taken in lift to reach coffee house and elsewhere is so slow, having a cuppa can be a chore. Overall 7.5 points out of ten. Hope the hotel will strive for a more excellent rating. As always sawasdee.com get thumbs up for hassle-free excellent service delivery. I would use it again for future hotel reservations without hesitation and recommend it to all my friends and family.

This is the third time we have stayed in this hotel. An excellent location, a short walk to the night bazaar. Beautiful lobby, spacious restaurant (first-class buffet breakfast) and a fantastic swimming pool. The staff are efficient and friendly. We will definitely stay there again. Excellent - no problems.

2005-07-29 until 2005-07-30 Central Duangtawan Hotel, Chiang Mai, Downtown

Hotel is large and sad, ot very well maintened. I was very disappointed and prefer IMPERIAL MAE PING hotel. I had a voucher (4 people) to stay 3 nights in 2 bedrooms DEULXE EXECUTIVE. As I have to be one day earlier in CHIANG MAI I got a second voucher for 2 people in 1 bedroom for 1 night. Despite the fact I sent mail and explain things 3 times nobody seemed to understand and when I asked to speak to the manager the phone was hanged down by the man in reception. I shall make an official claim to the General Manager of CENTRAL HOTEL GROUP for the nightmare we have to endure.

T

he location is good / the service also/ but the amminities they PROMISE are note available (like bathrobe, slippers and (as they promote on every room standard)coffee-and tea facilities !!! I will NOT visit this hotel next time. is OK

2005-02-15 until 2005-02-17 Central Duangtawan Hotel, Chiang Mai, Downtown

The Duangtawan was not what we had expected and hoped for in Chiang Mai. The room was drab and the workmanship revealed a quick completion with paint on the wood trim and many other conditions that did not impress. It took forever to get into an elevator. One positive aspect was the breakfast meal... very good! For the price we paid one would at least expect to be able to boil water for coffee but this was reserved for a more superior rate... how basic and rediculous. I asked a friend and discovered that the hotel had in fact completed construction rather unexspectantly fast after sitting unfinished for a long period due to some uncertain complications like financing.

Law K.

2004-11-25 until 2004-11-28 Duangtawan Hotel, Downtown

I have stay 3 nights in this newly built hotel in the central Chiangmai town area (next to Imperial Mae Ping hotel)...I was told this hotel just opened for about 4 months ago (July 2004 !) and no wonder cannot find the hotel location in the local map. Anyway I went there for the loy krathon festivals and almost all hotels are fully booked during this period. Generally, the room/bed is very clean as the hotel is very new. Location is superb as it is near to Night plaza, Pantib plaza (Electronics mart) and the morning market. Hotel staffs are very polite and helpful. The hotel has a good swimming pool and fitness club. The only constraint that I face is the elevator is too slow and will take some time to get to the floor if there are too many guests around. Some even has to take the stairs as they have been waiting for too long to get in. Breakfast is normal but there are some reasonable seafood/good food just opposite the hotel and along MacDonald stretch of road. There are lots of sourvenirs stalls that open in the night right infront of the hotel. If you like shopping, you will have to take a tuk-tuk (30-50 TBH) to Central shopping mall at the airport. At Chiangmai, remember to taste the Kantoke dinner and participate in some of the day trips will be nice. Transfer from the airport to your hotel can be booked upon arrival at airport for about 100 TBH for a car and takes about 15 mins to reach the town area.

Return trip to airport can be arranged at your hotel for 80 TBH per person.

Given another chance to visit Chiangmai, I will consider staying at this hotel again. Regards.

The service is very fast and has no problem in checking in to the hotel with the e-voucher issued.

This tourist was obviously not aware of the free shuttle buses that wait at the airport from just about all the hotels in Chiangmai. However, the DTW in my opinion is far better for the little extra....

I would rather stay at Top North Hotel right at Tapae for 600Baht! w/swimming pool. But thats me.

Me too. :o

...the price is alright for the location and standard, but the staff are uninspired, unsmiling, unhelpful foot-shufflers. I'd rather stay at a 150 baht per night place with no or very basic amenities where the staff at least are friendly and helpful and dont make their job seem like Chinese water torture.

As for Suriwongse or Duangtawan at the prices quoted, I would pick Duangtawan. But it's a close call.

No way should you be paying anything in advance in Thailand. At most ONE night's stay to secure a room.

Rooms are best booked through booking agents anyway, google them up.

In that price range & location, I'd also consider the Empress Hotel.

Cheers,

Chanchao

PLEASE PRE-PAY ON WEBSITE (WITH SECURE SERVER OF BANK OF ASIA):

Likely because the agent wants their percentage from you, now, rather than getting the hotel to pay later :o

Note: On the charges, I see '3%' listed, I assume that's the fee to process your credit card. On most cards, if you can document the charge, you'll be reimbursed by the credit card company

I have used this outfit on a number of occasions and NEVER paid more than the first night in the D2Wan.

Just had a quick look at their booking request and looks as thought its still the same ..ie first night only...have another look.

Ms "Hong-Wong" or wotever her name is usually turns up the following morning (boss is of course Mr "Pong")in reception and we pay in cash for the remaining nights.

Also handy if you dont like the place and want to move .

We did a runner from Rydges to the Porn Ping once ...wrong location..

Still never found out where the swimming pool is??

Try this:http://directrooms-thailand.com/. But they are more expensive for Duangtawan.

From my experience, most, if not all, Online agents need a credit card prepayment to guarantee the booking. Read the terms and conditions.

I have just booked and prepaid for my booking at the Duangtawan for 3 nights in April. (I know) your stay is much longer.

Yes, but you're going direct to the hotel site right? That's never the best thing to do unless it's budget accommodation.

Check out agencies like hotel.chiangmai-online.com. It's not common to require full payment in advance. (And if they do then it's indeed their loss)

Get a cheap international phone card which should be readily available at corner shops in central Leeds, or easier, install Skype for free, buy a cheap headset for your computer and activate SkypeOut and add 20 Euro to your credits. You can be on the phone to Thailand for several hours at that price.
