Phuket recycling network set up
Tanyaluk Sakoot

PHUKET: -- The Regional Environment Office (REO) in Phuket has announced that it has opened a network of centres around the island for people to drop off recyclable waste. All are at existing junk shops.

Surachai Kulathong of the REO told The Phuket News, “We want to reduce the amount of trash that ends up going to the incinerator – which is currently 700 tonnes a day.

“We have other projects that will be announced soon, in which members of the public can join.”

Meanwhile, Wichit Municipality has announced that it is accepting used cooking oil for recycling into at the Municipality’s biodiesel plant. Wichit will pay B14 a litre for the oil, which must be vegetable oil only (no animal fat) and must not have been used for cooking more than three times.

The aim is to reduce the amount of cooking oil poured down the island’s drains, and to reduce the health risks of cooking oil being used too many times.

Amounts over 200 litres will be collected by the municipality but smaller amounts must be taken to the Biodiesel Building during normal office hours.

For collection or for more information, call 076-525-100, extension 162 to 166.

so the only thing new is that now they have a list

you could always bring your recyclables to those points !

or if you can catch those guys collecting it for you they sort it out for you at your place ,scale it and pay you ( just lose a few bath on he total )

another no news, news

but positive that it gets some media attention

or it might be the case that recycling now can only happen through those "official centres " so the small collecter gets nothing and the big fish gets 99,9 %

Last year passing through Sukhothai, I saw a shop displaying in Thai and English prices for different types of waste. It might stimulate households who now put their waste in the orbortoh garbage cans to sell it. Pity though for the salaengs (scavengers going around in motorcycles with side cars). Money involved might be not worthwhile for many households though. In the high season my 15 room hotel/restaurant produces about 1200 Baht worth of waste per month, money goes into the tipping box so the staff is well motivated to throw away nothing which has residual value.
