PHUKET: -- Phuket Provincial Employment officers arrested 35 Russians in four nightclubs last night following reports of topless dance shows in Phuket’s infamous nightlife destination, Soi Bangla in Patong.

“We received reports of topless shows at nightclubs in the area and suspected there were also illegal workers operating,” said Kathu District Chief Veera Kerdsirimongkol, who led the raid on the four clubs at about 10pm.

Overall 35 Russians – 29 women and six men – were found in violation of labor laws, explained Mr Veera.

Those brought in by the officers face a variety of charges ranging from public indecency to working without a work permit. Some of those who did have work permits were working in a different sector than indicated on the permit, said Mr Veera.

The first nightclub hit by the raid was L'Amour, where dancer Elena Shatokhina, 32, was placed under arrest and taken to Kathu District Office for further questioning.

Seduction, Paradise Club and Moulin Rouge nightclubs were subsequently raided.

“We will ensure everyone is dealt with justly. Those who have work permits, but did not have them available, were assisted by officials in collecting their documents,” Mr Veera said.

The Patong Police along with the Phuket Business Development Office and Tourism Business and Guide Registration Office have been contacted to further the investigation.

Phuket nightlife raids net ‘dancer’ and 10 illegal foreign workers
Nattha Thepbamrung

Some of those caught in last night’s dragnet wait to be processed.

PHUKET: -- Kathu Police last night (April 29) arrested 11 foreigners for worked illegally in four nightspots along Bangla Rd, Patong.

Around 10pm a raiding party comprising Kathu District Officer Weera Kerdsirimongkol, Kathu Employment Office staff and a variety of other officials, along with police officers, began checks on the four venues.

The raids came after reports were received that the night venues were staging “obscene shows” featuring foreigners, who were also suspected of not holding work permits.

“We actually rounded up about 35 people,” said Mr Weera, “but only 11 of them were working at the time. The rest were sitting at the bars [of the various clubs] and claimed that they were there as customers. They produced their passports, so we had to release them.”

The first to be arrested was Alana Jacotima, 32, from Russia, who was caught dancing topless in the Glamour Club. She was found to hold a valid work permit as an actress/dancer, and was fined B500 for taking her top off in public.

The other 10 were all arrested on work permit charges in the remaining three clubs that were raided – Moulin Rouge, Paradise and Seduction.

An Australian, Thomas Bradley, 27, from Australia, had a valid work permit, but for a different place than the one where he was working. He was released but can expect to pay a fine of B5,000.

Five Russian women – Anna Kraynova, 25, Milana Velikorodnykh, 28, Orlova Liubov, 24, Ekaterina Stepanova, 25 and Anastasiia Naumova, 24 – were all found to hold expired work permits.

Alexei Michael Andrew Chase-McCarthy, 21, Danny Wetherall, 20 and James Snowdon, 21, all from Britain, along with Andarawas Patabendige Hiran Neranga De Vaas, 32, from Sri Lanka, were all found to have no work permits at all.

These nine were charged with working illegally.

Mr Weera grumbled, “At all of these places we found only foreign staff. The owners were nowhere to be seen and there were no Thai staff. When we asked the illegal foreign staff about this, all of them said they had no idea who their boss was. It may be they had all been instructed to say this.”

He said that he has to sent the names and other information on the four nightspots to the Phuket Business Development Office to check whether the companies owning the bars are legitimate, and whether they have Thai nominee shareholders.

The venue owners, if they can be found, face legal action for employing foreigners without valid work permits.

Yaowapa Phibulpol, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Employment Office said the nine with expired or non-existent work permits will go before the court and are likely to be fined and then deported. There is also a possibility they will also be barred from returning to Thailand.
