I think that it's rather pathetic that Great Britain is sending Prince Andrew to such a significant event. My God why can't Queen Elizabeth come herself? After all she's the second longest reigning monarch in the world isn't she.

The King of Thailand has been an exemplary monarch for his entire reign and must be one of the most well loved monarchs in the world.

Who will represent t6he Government of Thailand i wonder?

The Fisheries Department will distribute a large number of tilapia fish, locally known as Pla Nil (ปลานิล), to interested agriculturists for further breeding as part of the celebration on the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s accession to the Throne.

These parent tilapia, numbering 900,000, have been named Chitralada (จิตรลดา) species after the royal residence -- Chitralada Villa -- where the fish was bred and has been raised. Director-General of the Fisheries Department Charanthada Kanasuta (จรัลธาดา กรรณสูต) said the department had selected a number of high-quality tilapia from the ponds at Chitralada Villa for insemination, the produce from which has been later sent to various fisheries stations for further expansion.

The Director-General said the provincial fisheries stations are selecting 100 agriculturists who are ready in terms of equipment and experience to take those Chitralada tilapias for further breeding. The selected farmers will be given proper training on the tilapia culture. The Fisheries Department will disseminate the fish to farmers during May-July this year, and the latter will have to report to the department constantly about the development of the fish. The information will be kept as genetic evidence for use in the development of aquaculture industry in the future.

Honouring our King

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the crowning of the longest reigning monarch in the world's modern history - HM the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth ruler of the Chakri dynasty.

His Majesty was officially crowned on May 5, 1950. During the early years of his reign, Thailand found itself in a transitional period, finding its feet after the democratic revolution of 1932.

As a constitutional monarch, His Majesty refrains from involving himself in the politics of the day.

This country has at times fallen under the control of authoritarian regimes, and at times common people have had little chance of realising what was really happening in their country.

Nonetheless, His Majesty, true to his words on the day of accession to the throne - "We will reign with righteousness, for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people" - has never deserted his people.

His Majesty has brought the monarchy to the Thai people.

From the King's first year on his throne, Their Majesties travelled throughout Thailand, paying particular attention to the most remote and poorest areas, talking with people, observing first hand the toil of daily life, providing them with new opportunities and suggesting paths to a better life.

The thousands of development projects throughout the Kingdom initiated by His Majesty stand as testimony to his dedication.

After years of selfless work, His Majesty has earned the respect and love of his subjects. His work has helped shape Thailand's economics and its democracy.

And while His Majesty rarely intervenes in politics, his simple words of wisdom have always managed to resolve crises.

Thailand has always had a king on the throne as the nation's leader. The monarchy, the state, and the Buddhist religion are the three main institutions that make up Thailand.

While the nations around Thailand fell prey to colonial powers in the 19th century, it was the wisdom and astuteness of Thai kings, especially King Mongkut (King Rama IV) and King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) that enabled Thailand (then known as Siam) to retain her independence.

Monarchy is one of the oldest forms of government, and although many of the world's monarchies have ceased to exist and become republics or parliamentary democracies, there are currently 28 other monarchies around the globe standing fast.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, the Royal Thai Government has invited the world's 28 monarchs to Bangkok, to participate in a great celebration on June 12-13.

The invited monarchs are (listed in order of the year that each took their crown): HM Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom; HH Malietoa Tanumafili II of Samoa; HM King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga; HM Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei; HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman; HM King Jigme Singye Wangchuck of Bhutan; HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark; HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden; HM King Juan Carlos I of Spain; HM Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands; HM King Mswati III of Swaziland; HSH Prince Hans Adam II of Lichtenstein; His Imperial Highness Emperor Akihito of Japan; HM King Harald V of Norway; HM King Albert II of Belgium; HH Sheikh Hamed Bin Khalifa Al-Thani of Qatar; HM King Letsie III of Lesotho; HM King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein of Jordan; HM King Hamed Bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain; HM King Mohammed VI of Morocco; HRH the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg; HM Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al- Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullait; the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XII of Malaysia, HM King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev of Nepal; HM Preh Samdech Preah Baromnrath Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia; HH Sheikh Khlaifa bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan of United Arab Emirates (UAE); HSH Prince Albert of Monaco; HM King Abdullah bin Abul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia; and HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of Kuwait.

World Blood Donor Day 2006 in Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne

The World Health Organization (WHO) has entrusted Thailand to host the global launch for the celebration of World Blood Donor Day 2006. Since Thailand is celebrating the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne this year, the country is honored to include the activities to mark World Blood Donor Day 2006 as part of the celebrations.

World Blood Donor Day is an annual event held on June 14, which is the birthday of Dr. Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his important discovery. WHO, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion, therefore, jointly designated June 14 World Blood Donor Day.

World Blood Donor Day is globally celebrated to give recognition to voluntary blood donors. The inaugural launch was in South Africa in 2004, followed by London in 2005. This year, Bangkok is the focal point for the global celebration. For Thais, 2006 is also the special year as it marks the 60th year on the throne of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who is the royal patron of the Thai Red Cross Society.

The National Blood Center of the Thai Red Cross Society takes this opportunity to promote Thailand’s blood transfusion services at the international level and thank blood and stem cell donors. It is launching a project to encourage the public to donate their blood as a tribute to His Majesty on the occasion of the 60th anniversary celebrations of his accession to the throne.

The slogan of this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “I’m … and I save lives.” It is also used in various activities marking this occasion in Thailand. For example, blood donors are invited to send their photos showing what they do for a living. These photos will form a “Wall of Humanity.” It will also be put on display at public places to promote World Blood Donor Day 2006 and the slogan “I’m …and I save lives.”

At 10:00 a.m. on June 14, the opening ceremony of World Blood Donor Day will take place on a grand scale at Lumphini Park in Bangkok, with a parade of 3,000 people, comprising representatives of various countries and blood donors. Representative of youths from six language groups, namely Thai, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, and Arabic, will declare that they will support voluntary blood donation and serve as role models for other youths. The opening ceremony will be broadcast live via Global Network. At the National Blood Center on Henri Dunant Road, blood donation services will be open to the public and there will be a blood exhibition. Free medical check-ups will also be offered to visitors.
