GrantSmith 3172
What's the fascination with the sin sod? It's a Thai thing, Thai's marrying Thai's pay it, so why should a farang marrying a Thai be any different? Ohhhh because farang are being extorted again? One price for Thais, one price for farang tripe... But that's hardly the fault of Thai society that you decided to marry a less than financially fluid female from the north east now is it... B100 million is a bit on the excessive side, but if old mate can afford it, it's his money and his prerogative to do what he likes with it...
technologybytes 2132
My understanding is that the sin sod it's a severance package, it's paid to the family because the girl will no longer be helping to support them.. so it's hardly applicable to most farang who are forever supporting their extended family and their unwell cattle/leaky roofs. I may be wrong, but I thought a Klongman was a gift given to the bride herself.
kristophon 83
I hope she makes good use of the qualifications. Fair play to her, at least she didn't sit on the floor eating and gambling the last 9years away! TheGhostWithin 657
Well, that has certainly raised the expectations of brides to be in Roi Et Yes. and most certainly the financial expectations of families with single daughters finding foreigners to enrich their financial situations in Roi Et. Perhaps they will begin competing with places like Buriram and Udon Thani for to be the top "I don't work but we have a rich sponsor" family of the region. It really is a business, and the offer of 100 million is an agreement between two, a completely unnecessary act was for this to be published - I promise you it will make its' way through Thai editorials as well, and as such others expectations of what you and I will front up with when it comes to marriage time. My ones' partners are already trying to keep up with the only other person married to a foreigner in the village and want a 7 figure sin sot, which is the only reason I have not married her. If only the family knew the sadness they were bringing on their own daughter in their chase of the bigger, better deal.

Popular Post gavin310 46
Obviously, this guy is an outlier. He could probably drop a few million just on a weekend away, so, 100mil was probably just a weeks work, at the most. His now wife has been spending the last 9 years getting educated and most probably a shining example of a person. She has probably been a great support for him over the years and the money that he gave to her parents would have been worth every satang even if the marriage doesn't last a few hours. I don't think we will hear anything more over it because, you would think, after 9 years they would have a pretty good idea of what they are both about together. Good luck to them. It's amazing how people take a nice, positive story like this and crap all over it. 9 years they've been together, she's 40 and he's early 50s, he's helping her get an education and helping her family, and people here still talk about her like she's a bar girl and he's some dirty farang roaming the streets of Pattaya. I'm incredibly thankful for all the great advice I've gotten on these forums, but people like that really irritate me. They have an image of farang and relationships crafted by their own reflection in the mirror.
Popular Post TheGhostWithin 657
Good for her! And good of him to stress education to a loved one So you support the greed of Thai people treating foreign men as a credit card which does not need to be repaid and do you also support men for being absolute fools in paying this kind of money even though this is not part of the Thai culture? Sin Sot exists in Thai culture (as the Coconuts article sates), but it is based on a system of negotiation (Coconuts mysteriously neglects to include this for its' English speaking audience!) depending on not only who the husband is, but who the wife is, who her family is. The family are a farming family, of which most lease land and do not own it - only a small group of people own the agricultural land in Thailand. She was working as a waitress, which is not considered a high-up or desirable job. She is now educated, but one might speculate (without Coconuts providing sufficient information) where the funding for her university level education came from - it is doubtful a farmer could pay for someone to undertake their PHD. In this situation you could either consider (assuming the groom had paid for her education) that this cost would be included in the Sin Sot, and that her situation be considered prior to the two engaging - the daughter of a farmers family working as a waitress in a restaurant. There is also a "farang mark up" placed on many for sin sot payments, of which there exists no cultural reason for this to take place and is simply discriminatory based on not being a Thai man. Hopefully others do read this post and take this into consideration when being asked to pay a sin sot for their loved one in the future..

Tatsujin 12635
Sin Sot should only apply to those who are "from" this country, not foreigners. But if any of you guys are stupid enough to pay it, that's down to you. Besides all that, it's against my religion to "buy" a wife. Deal with it.
