watcharacters
Drunken Isaarn farmers, wives and ex-wives, inlaws and outlaws. Grinding poverty and droughts, sounds lovely. What are the farangs like there? Lots of young hip go getters or what? I lived there for a year when I was 26. Was great. Probably not so great if you're 50, with no financial security, living among a community of leeches. But I had a ball. . I almost pity people in thailand who are here without financial security. I see so many people here with just the very minimum financial support. I couldn't stand to live based on receiving a check deposit in the mail or a letter in the mailbox. Hand to mouth was never my choice. Proper savings and spending habits eliminates or prevents that from happening. Amazing to me to learn how many people make decent money while working and end up with next to nothing in Thailand. A shame.
maprao
Isaan farm girls are well known for their miking abilities! But remember there is good and bad in all countries. If you choose to live in the boonies go with the flow you can't change it. If you can afford it build your wife a house in the boonies and keep a bolt hole in the city or near the beach. Talking to chickens is not my favourite pass time. Edited June 9, 2013 by maprao

Titanic comes to mind. The gutless will never have a life beyond mums apron strings. Money perhaps BUT. Some of us go for it and couldn't give a xxxx, you only live once. sirchai
Im glad I dont live in Issarn. Its full of redneck farmers that dont really like farangs, a lot of them are equivelant to trailer park trash in the US. I found it horrible there. The locals are rude, the food is horrible. The farangs I met left a lot to be desired. Give me the south any day. Nice food, beautiful islands, lovely people Seems that you don't know Isaan well. It's 33% of this country. People in the south are pretty strange, fast with a gun to kill you. I agree with you regarding the nice islands.-

Salapoo
What do you think folks, 'ridiculous post'? Probably not so great if you're 50, with no financial security, living among a community of leeches. I'm sure that being 50+ with no financial security living in a baking, rural 3rd World countryside is complete paradise, eh. Probably not so great if you're 50, with no financial security, living among a community of leeches. Quoting yourself and asking for confirmation from the gathered throng is a sign of insecurity, and an indication of your lack of conviction in your own beliefs. Or you could just be needy, has it ever crossed your mind that there may be westerners here who do not fall in to your pre-conceived pigeon holes. People who are not rich, but also not poor. People who just get along fine, take the rough with the smooth, and just get on, have the ability to spot the difference between someone who talks to you just because they want to and someone who has an ulterior motive. The easiest person to sell something to is a salesman..... my advice to you would be, stay away from Isaan.

Except for the farang bit. PS. A JT poll is in order here. This post above, right or wrong. No need for a poll TA. Honestly its not for everyone but then how many of us can handle Bangkok for more than a week? I put my hand up. How many of us can handle Pattaya for a place to call home? No way. not me. But plenty looove these cities. The list goes on, its all in the eye of the beholder. Issan is a big place. Its not a trailer park in some US town. Its inhabitants are some 20million plus. I know plenty of falang that live up there in various regions, and all choose to stay because of the lifestyle. None stay because their wife wont let them leave. Irishlvan and his generalisations are narrow minded. I mean mate, keep your south, theres to many bombings, kidnappings and its full of muslim terrorists, but hey, the foods good!. Sorry Irishlvan, your narrow mind is wareing off onto me. Most farangs choose to live in Isaarn because its cheap. No other reason Thailands cheap. cardholder
They certainly need a passport at Chom Cheum. When the casino first opened you could get into Cambodia to gamble with just an ID, that changed several years ago. Oh come on Baz, do you really believe that? I have seen dozens of Thais going to that casino. The only passport they need is green and crispy and has a picture of the monarch's head.
MeMock
The OP village does not sound very nice. Al I can add to this thread is what my village is like (When I am there). There is one town drunk but apart from him I rarely see anyone over indulging. In fact I rarely see anyone drinking. My Father in law did not drink and did not tolerate over indulgence so our home was basically always 'dry' which suited me fine. Of course I could have a drink anytime I wanted to but without a friend to sit and chew the fat with at the same time there was never the appeal. If I feel like a drink I walk the 200m up the road to my BIL's shop and have a couple of cold ones with him while talking with him or other locals. There are of course the weddings and the funerals that occasionally happen but in the last 10 years I have never heard of any problems occurring at these apart from the occasional sore head the following day. Popular Post transam
Must add something I know about Isaan folk, they are very good at ''reading'' people. If someone has an attitude problem and.or thinks they are better than the locals, they will know about it. Perhaps those here who have a problem in Isaan I would respectfully suggest they have an attitude or Hi-So problem.

Forgot to tell you about the local that tried to swipe my wallet....yep lovely locals....perhaps those on the outside can come here and see what's going on around them, we are hyper sensitive to our surroundings and what's going on..... I would suggest those like yourself just become accustomed to the environment... if you didn't turn the blinkers on it would send you crazy.
