Songkran in the South will be held imperiously

The Songkran celebrations in the southern provinces of Thailand will be held larger than life this year, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand will be arranging many fun and captivating activities to lure more tourists to travel to the South.

The Songkran Festival is being celebrated in the south since ancient time, as it denotes Thailand’s New Year. During this three-day holiday, from April 13th to 15th, people will make merits and give food offering to Buddhist monks. They will also free fish and birds, while bathing the Buddha statue. They will construct sand pagodas and have a Ms. Songkran Parade. And of course, they will splash water as usual like other regions in Thailand.

Hat Yai in Songkhla Province is one of the famous places where many tourists have visited during this festival. This year, the event is called “Hat Yai Midnight Songkran 2006”, and it will be held from April 11th to 15th. This year’s event will be different from the previous years, as the World Music Festival will join in the festivity. Music stages will be assembled across the city of Hat Yai, especially along the main routes.

And to celebrate the 6th decade of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 2nd Southern Regional District and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province together organize the Grand Songkran Festival, which is under the Thailand Grand Invitation project. Participants can take part in many recreational activities such as the tradtion Nang Dan Parade and the merit-making ceremony which is being performed by the local people every year. 1-ton kilogram of Thai vermicelli will also be exhibited, while tourists can also see a mini light-and-sound show at the fair.

The Songkran celebration in the South has continued to attract tourists worldwide, especially tourists from Singapore and Malaysia. The event is expected to attract a large number of tourists this year once again. Please call the Public Relations Division of the TAT at 0-2250-5500, extension 1555 - 1563 for further information.
